Is the punting job Legghio's to lose?

I'm surprised they cut Leggs.  The other P's didn't look so great in game 2.  But dressing a GLOB P is "free" (we don't need that 2nd GLOB dressed).  And we can now have an extra ST/D NAT.

I'm not happy with the move.  Why not roster the guy and then trade-bait him to the other teams before week 1??  I'm pretty sure some team will snap him up.  At the very worst you PR the guy.  Or C.Jones can IR him.

If some other team snaps him up immediately and fires their existing guy, you know Leggs had some value.  I still think he can be serviceable long term.  Now the pressure is on Castillo to be more Meddy-level than Leggs-level.  If Castillo gives us Leggs-level then we made a biiiiiiiig mistake.

Bye Leggs; I thought you were pretty good and you had heart!  But the witch-burners needed another witch to burn.  They won this round!

I'm not 100% sure that you don't have to dress 2 globals in 2023. Regardless, Bennett, Kelly and Schmekel are the only new Canadians. So I'd take that to mean Kelly will play on ST's.

The other issue that worried me is that both Castillo and Sheahan would have been positions on defence as depth in 2022.

Ya, the Leggs-burners are missing the roster implications of the Leggs-drop.  It's not just which kicker makes more kicks.  It's also the new waste of DI and dressed GLOB.

When that DI was Money Meddy it was a no-brainer.  Castillo is not Meddy.  As people have posted before, many of Castillo's seasons have looked a lot like Leggs' seasons.  Maybe a couple % better here and there.  Woopie.

To justify this move Castillo must be significantly better than Leggs.  Especially in the post-season.

Here's another important point: if Castillo ends up worse than Leggs by mid-season, what's plan B??  I don't think there is one.

Don't get me wrong: I am hopeful Castillo can be at least marginally better than Leggs.  I am hopeful it wins us at least 1 extra game over Leggs.  But it is not without roster cost.  And it certainly is not without risk.  I bet The Mafia spent a loooot of time agnoizing over this decision.

The "Leggs-burners" lol

...The fans didn't release him. If you guys couldn't see the writing on the wall when we signed Castillo and brought in 300 kickers I don't know what to say.

He wasn?t bad but he wasn?t nearly as good as you make him sound. If he was, Castillo would not be here.

well...I had wondered about his longevity with this team after they signed Castillo.    Was a tough call for us as we drafted him....he will likely find a new team....he might even be motivated to prove the Bomber brass was wrong in dumping him.....remember Haralahu?  (sp?)

Junkie and others already provided the stats in other threads and we've had this discussion.  Castillo's worst seasons were at best a tad better than Legg's best.  In some cases it looked like a wash whether in FGs or PATs.  We need Castillo to have one of his best seasons for this to be worth it.

Yes, clearly The Mafia thinks he can.  Now he has to deliver.  My main point in all this is he can't merely be the same as Leggs because of the negative roster implications.

Yeah like choking twice in a grey cup that lost the game and cost hundreds of people hundreds or more dollars.

How?s that Japanese. League doing?  Maybe he could go there.

The issue with Liegghio is when it rained, it tended to pour. The Montreal game or the WCF are two examples. Miss one kick? Fine. But then you don?t miss the second. He would.

I think the "is Leggs crap" argument will be settled pretty easily and quickly by watching whether another team picks him up; and whether they start him.  This is anyone's guess.  But the fact we didn't/couldn't trade him maybe hints at the answer?  Dunno.

Leggs will get picked up ASAP. Cheap, Canadian, punts and can PK. Good insurance policy.

It will be great for Leggs and bad for us.  I see de ja vu.  Our last chance at a cup with a big rebuild coming.

Nope the team lost the game that day.  And the better team won.
Your suggestion that he goes to Japan is ridiculous and shows no respect for Leggs.

I hope he gets a fresh start and another look somewhere. I'm sure he will. He's capable enough, just glad he's not kicking our pressure field goals anymore.

I too wish him luck.  The crowd on here that roasts our players when they exist gets old fast.

It's not about unfairly roasting players.  Lieggio missed  few field goals and converts during the season and missed the most important field goal attempt in the '22 Grey Cup.  It is the sole reason why significant competition was brought in to potentially upgrade that position this year.  Coaches and management were clearly not content to go into '23 with that position unchallenged.
