Is the punting job Legghio's to lose?

We're pretty much in agreement that Castillo has the place kicking job locked up and we all assumed that due to Legghios Canadian passport that he would secure the role as our punter and back up kicker should Castillo get injured.   Both import punters kicked the hide off the ball in Edmonton and the Aussie kicker also had good placement.
Is Marc Legghio in any danger of losing out to either of them?   We'll probably know by the weekend and my bet is one of the 3 will be on the PR.

While the most likely option is as you describe with Legs as the punter, there is another scenario.

If either of the Global punters shows better, there are no negative ratio implications to keeping one of them over Legghio.  As a 3 job National kicker, Legghio could have trade value.  (Edmonton's new placekicker looks horrible). I haven't really watched the punters, but it would take an exceptional performance to displace Legghio.

Does anyone know what Castillo salary is?

It will certainly be more than Staton or Sheahan. They are significantly younger than Castillo and on 2 year ELC deals. Kickers can play longer without issues but SMS is never totally out of the decision making question. An individual's overall athleticism might be a factor. You never want a kicker to have to make a last player tackle on a returner but it does come up at times.

Some CFL kickers have been like LB's taking down returners.  This would be a small factor and I don't know where any of the candidates stand on that part.

The global kicker is an interesting option though. It would allow that 4th DI which would almost certainly be on the defensive side of the ball. That's true for the global choices but are they better than the import choices.

Obviously the 1st choice is who are the better kickers and in which combination.  I won't be surprised by which way this goes.

I think the long term prospects for Leggs is enough for him to remain a Bomber.

I'm not sure that Castillo has the PK job locked up 100%. O'Shea has said some very positive things about Staton, brought him on the road trip, and still has him in camp. I agree that it's Castillo's job to lose. But if Staton ever had a night with a 55-yarder or something like that, could things get interesting? They already cut one PK, so wouldn't they have cut both if the job was 100% sewn up?

I hope that the game tonight gives Staton and the rookie punters some opportunities to either cut themselves or steal a job.

We only have one other punter. Schmitz and he's 36 years old and hasn't played in 8 years before last week.

Did Sheahan get cut today?

He's a kicker and I don't think he also punts. If he does then that's an advantage for him.

It appears as though the punter (whoever wins the job) will be the holder this year. I base this on the first pre-season game and some training camp photos.

In the first exhibition game, Sheahan & Schmitz alternated holds. The kick that Staton bounced off the upright and in was held by Sheahan.

Liegghio was the holder for Castillo for one game in 2021.

I've seen him punting in practice, but not place kicking. Are you thinking of Staton (who is, solely, a PK)?

No, he's listed as a K on the roster and I can't find any info on punting during his career. Roster info isn't always entirely valid and perhaps he can both jobs. Any player that can do both or all 3 jobs has an advantage.

I haven't heard much about punting in practice but it never hurts to have that skill even as an in game injury replacement.

Now if he's actually primarily a punter and not a kicker that changes the discussion I guess.

Sheahan and Schmitz are both listed on the roster as punters. Staton is listed as a kicker.

It's changed from when I printed a TC roster earlier. So that might suggest he's more punter than kicker. As I said that changes the discussion then if it was the other way around.

I agree. Based on the practices I've been at, Sheahan is now being seen solely as a punter by the coaches. The only guys who have been kicking FG's at practice since what's-his-name was cut are Liegghio, Castillo, and Staton.
