At least we are saving money.

We can use that money to sign whatever holes we still have in the roster in September.

As mentioned earlier, Lawler received a large signing bonus so he's not suffering, but it looks like the Bombers are only going to get 2/3-1/2 a season out of him, so the savings are not as big as you'd think they'd be.

Reports were that 75k of his 260k were paid upfront. That still represents around 50k savings after this weekend and 10k plus change for any more per games missed.
Some people take this forum way too seriously.

And 3-1 without him.

This.

Outside of the loss to the Lions, the offense has been very proficient without him.

Silver linings.

...and Lawler wouldn't have made any difference in the one loss.

Not exactly. Even a player activated from the PR on an ELC makes about $4K which is probably $3K more than on the PR. So the savings against Lawler might be about $7K per game. Nevertheless we get the idea of savings towards the SMS while suspended.

Precisely.

This whole situation is beyond frustrating and that only worsens as it goes on, but the team has started off the season very well all the same.

Hopefully, this matter gets resolved in short order and we can see #89 back on the field terrorizing opposing DBs soon.

I'm still not sold that it's a for-sure thing we are getting SMS savings by him being suspended.  Wouldn't it depend on how his contract is written?  What if they promise him $X per week instead of $X per game?  What if it says nothing about games played and just promises him $Y amount for the whole year, and they pay it all back to him after the suspension?

Or is there some standard way every team draws up contracts where you guys know for sure he'll never get paid for these missed games?

I know nothing about how these things are laid out.  And unless there are public copies of some of these contracts, how do you guys know?

I guess KW could speak to the SMS savings at some point, and that would be that.

No player gets game day cheques while suspended...  and yes, they get paid by the game

I wouldn't bet money on that.  We were totally in the game until that end-the-first-half TD.  Ya, you're probably right, and we were looking ugly, but you never know what some super-talent spark would do for our morale.  We could have put Lawler on some short hot routes for guaranteed receptions regardless of the heat coming.

Ok, so if that's the case, do they just follow a formula, like:

(  total-guaranteed-salary  MINUS  signing-bonus  )  DIVIDED BY  18  =  game-cheque

??  So Lawler's game-cheque, and the amount he's losing each week suspended, is around $10k?  And your average ELC guy's game-cheque is around $4.7k?

All these things must be spelled out in the contract, then.  Maybe with a CFL or club boilerplate in place.

Apparently the majority of CFL players are represented by the same few player agents, so contracts won't deviate much in detail, just in the numbers, as in fill in the blank spots.

Yes, they are.  There may be minor variations depending on performance bonuses, roster bonuses, signing bonuses, but basically you agree to a term and a pay structure for that term.  You get paid as long as the contract stays in force, and you are not suspended by the team or league.  Suspension means the contract remains in force, and you are bound by its terms, but the team does not have to pay you.  This is the limbo Lawler is in.

I....think he might have.

Lawler is the kind of player that can make you pay for blitzing. Could have turned that whole game around before it even started.

We were soundly beaten in the trenches and it's highly unlikely Lawler would not have prevented the 7 sacks or challenged the outcome of that game.    We need to move on and get him back before the season slips away on him.....I'm more concerned with his game shape and getting injured by not being 100% ready to play both physically and mentally
