BB Kicker Situation

My takeaway from the horrendous performance at Hamilton is that our K, Leggio, has a problem getting it deep on his kickoffs.  He seems rarely able to kick it deeper than the 30 yd line.  Other CFL kickers seem able to kick much deeper, usually around the 10-15 area.  Short kickoffs put our defense in a bind because the opponent gets pretty decent field position even after a short return.   Maybe BB can find someone on the roster with a stronger leg for kickoffs.  Just watch this at the upcoming SSK game.

A kickoff to the 30 yard line is a 50 yard kick.

There has been 18 kickoffs of 50 yards or less in the CFL this season (onside kicks removed)
- Sergio Castillo 8
- Stefan Flintoft 4
- Richie Leone 2
- Rene Paredes 2
- Brett Lauther 2
- Marc Liegghio 0

You're right. 100% of his kickoffs make it past the 30 yard line and that is not acceptable.

It's not the distance that's the problem; it's the height. I don't have a huge problem with his kicks, but I do notice other punters give the ball more airtime, which often allows the cover team to get closer to the returner when the ball is caught. IMHO though, this isn't really an issue that is affecting us too much.

I think it's intentional, not related to leg-strength/ability (witness 55 yard field goal). One of O'Shea's philosophies on kickoffs seems to be kicking a little shorter to allow the teams to converge on the returner while still covering their lanes and thus reduce the risk of a big return. In other words, he'll give up the 40-45 yard line in exchange for the big return. Another thing I have noticed this year is we've been fortunate so far with the opposition getting holding or blocking penalties on returns. That could change down the stretch.

People have been noting Leggs' short kickoffs since season start.  I've been watching carefully and he does seem shorter than some kickers.  However, with the new kickoff position rules, I consider it a "good kickoff" when at the end the opponent is at or behind their 40.  Most of our kickoffs have this result.

Is this all designed or do they compensate for Leggs potentially having a weaker leg?  I don't know.  Do teams that have KOs landing at the 10 fare better in net yards after all returns are factored in?  Dunno that either.

Does Leggs do more of a line-drive KO?  Yes, he certainly does.  Is that bad?  Dunno.  I thought for KO/punts that hang time was critical, so one has to wonder about this.  We don't have much hang time on KOs.  But again, we usually make other teams begin around the 40...

Except for that ST lobotomy that caused the Banjo Bowl KO return TD, our KO cover has been exceptional this season.  We may not be the best, but we are very consistent, and I think MOS values consistency over absolute-best-stat.

Even the announcers mentioned that the Bombers were kicking short to avoid the big return. We know that Leggs can kick a lot further than he showed in that game.

Someone stirring the pot again.
Ever consider kicking into the wind?
Ever consider the additional yardage on kick offs this season?
And do you really think our kick off coverage is that great? Watch the film. A lot of missed tackles.
Winnipeg has different kick off plays and strategies. They just don?t smash the ball down the field and hope that the coverage team stops the run.

Yeah, I don?t even consider kicking an issue anymore.

Sorry for the muddled formatting...

Basically, Leggs has more kicks, more yardage and the 4th best average of kickers with over 20 attempts.
