QuoteYup. I'm thrilled u sports and the other leagues are putting pressure on Johnston. They're basically saying "we considered your radical changes for a whole year and have concluded you're batpoop crazy".

Don't underestimate the pressure this puts on Johnston. Sanity may still prevail.

Theysaw right threw these ill-conceived changes and refused to be intimidated by the cfl, and follow along and be puppets, good on them. And it looks great that the largest football group in Canada says augh....no to your changes. Crushes big stews credibility.

This means hundreds of community fields across the country will avoid the expense of making rash alterations.  Football Canada may also decide not to follow the CFL in any recent or proposed changes to game play.

This is all totally normal stuff and won't make a difference to the CFL's plans. After all, the NCAA and NFL rules differ quite in a bit even if the field dimensions are the same. Other sports differ at different levels of play also. USports doesn't really have a substantial following so I'm sure they'll align over time. The CFL is also playing nice by saying they'll pay to retrofit the field in shared spaces but I am sure they won't do it forever. Suspect they may have to with some stadium agreements but those things change and evolve too - albeit more slowly.

And I kinda like that there's a variation. If the old rules are valued by the market in any meaningful way we should see a rise of attention and attendance at USports. Anyone want to guess how likely that is?

I can't see PAS making changes for FG posts.  Maybe chalking the field, but the posts?

There are variables in different field at different levels.  Not sure if any minor league fields still have the H field goal posts on the goal line, but I am sure they used those after the pro's got the offset posts.

And its not going to make any difference to players learning the game in USports (still hate than name, it literally says US right at the start, how is that Canadian?) moving up to CFL, or high school moving to Usports or NCAA (Now, NCAA has a C in it, why can't ours?)

Yes, the new rules mean we miss out on a handful of explosive missed FG returns, and no winning the game on a walk off missed FG.  (Maybe we need better kickers so the "missed FG play no longer exists?)

But, overall, until we see whether the changes make the game faster and higher scoring overall, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.  After all, they were Unanimously approved by everyone with actual skin in the game, the owners.
Unabashed positron.  Blue koolaid in my fridge.  I wear my blue sunglasses at night.  Homer, d'oh.

STAFFORD, TA'ALA AND MORGAN FINED FOR ACTIONS IN WEEK 13

TORONTO (September 3, 2026) – The Canadian Football League (CFL) Department of Health, Safety and Integrity manages league discipline, while the Office of the Commissioner oversees suspendible offences.

The Department – which includes Chief Football Operations Officer Greg Dick, Vice-President of Officiating Darren Hackwood, Vice-President of Football Operations and Player Safety Eric Noivo and Associate Vice-President of Football Operations Ryan Janzen – has issued four fines from Week 13.

  • Ottawa defensive lineman Jelani Stafford has been fined for delivering a high hit on BC quarterback Nathan Rourke.
  • Ottawa defensive lineman Blessman Ta'ala has been fined for delivering a low hit on BC quarterback Nathan Rourke.
  • Ottawa linebacker Nyles Morgan has been fined for two separate actions:
    • Committing non-football acts on BC fullback Riley Pickett.

Bahaha "committing non football acts on someone" is a vaguely hilarious description.

I don't think anyone ever expected anyone to follow the CFL. There was no way for any other field to pay for the changes. It's be irrelevant to the CFL as they never considered or consulted football Canada in the first place.

Which is a huge criticism on my part, as I still believe the CFL was hugely in the wrong for attempting to make a unilateral decision without consulting the organizations that have kept the league afloat over the years.

In reality changing the field back and forth only becomes a burden in the 4 venues the CFL shares with Usports. I have no idea of the cost or complexity of this task, but it seems reasonable that the CFL as a whole should pickup the tab as it is their initiative.

Wade originally said it wouldn't be a big deal but that was in the middle of damage control in the initial back lash.

We'll see what actually happens long term.

I doubt they waver now, a large decline in attendance and a riot or two may cause them to rethink after next season.  Heard a lot of grumbling on podcasts from long term season ticket holders who have seen their seats magically teleport from the playing field into the endzone without the offer of a discount, questioning renewal and sewing seeds of discontent.

Blueforlife

These changes combined with a possible poor record this year could hurt season ticket numbers but overall not really worried about either

I would prefer is the field didn't change, we shall see

Some folks would have to be accommodated with their seats going from decent to pretty bad

So weird, every single season cgy signs one of our castoffs at the last minute. Every single season. And much of the time they never see the AR, let alone the field.

Tinfoil says they are buying the book again. Never forget biggie admitted as much.
Never go full Johnston!

It's stakeholders giving Johnston the middle finger. It's them saying the changes are dumb. If they were good, they'd happily adopt them to keep things uniform. They would use their leverage to get the CFL to pay for most of it.

You're downplaying the rift. Name one other way the field and post differ between u and CFL. It's kind of the basis for everything, not some minor clock tweak. Does the field or post differ between NCAA and NFL? Didn't think so.

Bringing up the popularity of u sports is a straw man and red herring. Canada has never had a football culture like the USA. Imagine a team that is 100% nats, and then subtract around 5 years of development. Not that many are interested, and post placement is irrelevant to that.
Never go full Johnston!
