RB James Butler healthy scratch for Hamilton Tiger-Cats vs. Elks, Greg Bell to start
By 3Down Staff -August 16, 2024

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are making a switch at running back this week, replacing veteran James Butler with rookie Greg Bell.

Butler has recorded 92 carries for 440 yards and one touchdown over eight games this season along with 37 catches for 312 yards and one score. He missed only one game due to injury earlier this season on June 30 with Bell getting the start in a 24-22 loss to the Ottawa Redblacks.

Head coach Scott Milanovich indicated on Friday that Butler is "banged up," though he did not appear on the team's injury report this week.

Bell ran 13 times for 52 yards and caught seven passes for 40 yards in his lone start this season. The 26-year-old ran for 1,728 yards and 15 touchdowns over two seasons at San Diego State University following stints at the University of Nebraska and Arizona Western Community College.

Running back isn't the only position Hamilton is switching up as Taylor Powell will make his first start of the season ahead of Bo Levi Mitchell. Powell threw for 319 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions in a relief performance against the Montreal Alouettes last week, replacing Mitchell after he threw an early interception to Darnell Sankey.

The Tiger-Cats are starting to get healthy in the secondary, however, as James Peters and Stavros Katsantonis have returned to the starting lineup. Peters missed last week's loss due to a thigh injury, while Katsantonis has missed four straight with a leg issue.

Jordan Murray will start at left tackle in place of the injured Joel Figueroa with Quinton Barrow slotting in at right tackle. Star receiver Tim White will also handle the return duties as Davon 'Smoke' Harris has been moved to the six-game injured list with a foot injury.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2-7) will host the Edmonton Elks (2-7) on Saturday, Aug. 17 with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. EDT.

McLeod Bethel-Thompson to start for Edmonton Elks vs. Hamilton as Tre Ford ruled out
By 3Down Staff -August 16, 2024

After being replaced by Canadian quarterback Tre Ford in Week 8, McLeod Bethel-Thompson is once again the starting quarterback of the Edmonton Elks.

The 36-year-old was relegated to the bench following an 0-7 start to the season and remained there until Ford suffered an injury to his ribs during last week's win over the B.C. Lions. Ford was placed on the one-game injured list on Friday and will not play when the Elks visit the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Saturday.

Bethel-Thompson has completed 69.5 percent of his passing this season for 1,959 yards, 10 touchdowns, and eight interceptions but has yet to win a start this year. With Ford unavailable, second-year passer Jarret Doege has been elevated off the practice squad to take on the third-string duties behind backup Dakota Prukop.

Running back Kevin Brown was a full participant in practice all week but will not play with the tandem of Javon Leake and Justin Rankin remaining intact. Leake and Rankin have been exceptional over the past two games, rushing for a combined 403 yards and four touchdowns in wins over Saskatchewan and B.C.

American defensive lineman Romeo McKnight (ankle) will miss a second straight game while Canadian defender Woodly Appolon is out of the lineup in favour of D.K. Bonhomme, who was a second-round pick in the 2024 CFL Draft.

The Edmonton Elks (2-7) will visit the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2-7) on Saturday, Aug. 17 with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. EDT.

Ford being gone makes a Ticat win easier.  We desperately need the East to keep winning.  Go Cats!!

If "bad MBT" shows up, it'll be over.

Powell looking way better than '23 Powell.  He might end up being a Cody in 5 more years.  Wouldn't it be great if he lights it up?!

Anyone know if TSN is gonna "golf" over half the game again?  Any tips on best TSN channel to PVR?  Just when I thought I couldn't hate golf-on-tv any more...

Weather warning: as of 5am the forecast is thunderstorms 60% at kickoff, taper to 40% for remainder of the game.  Could be a lightning delay.  Add extra time to your PVR and adjust your fantasy team accordingly!

(With luck the weatherguy will be wrong as usual.)
