Blue Bombers add kicker to roster

WINNIPEG, MB., March 25, 2023 - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the signing of American placekicker Chandler Staton.

Staton (5-11, 195; Appalachian State; born: in Gainesville, GA) comes to Winnipeg after a collegiate career with the Mountaineers (2017-21) that earned him a look from the Green Bay Packers last year as an undrafted free agent.

Staton connected on 64 of 81 field goals (79 %) during his days at Appalachian State, with a career best of 53 yards, and left as the school's career leader in points (464), field goals (64), and field goal percentage.

He also set a school record by converting on 20 of 21 field goal attempts in his final season while being named a First-team All-Sun Belt Conference, a Pro Football Network First-Team All-American and a semi-finalist for the Groza Award as the nation's top kicker.

Competition is, and will always be, a part of sports, business and almost every aspect of life in attempting to get better at what you do.

It is never "meaningless" and to even suggest that is to says we don't need to move forward, to get better and in fact to suggest it is meaningless is to admit to complacency.

Things like combines, drafts, trades, player recruitment are necessary to make every team better and to prepare for the future in situations that require you to be your best and to both improve the present and prepare for the years ahead.

I found this move to be very interesting.....this guy could be added incentive for Legghio to be on top of his game.    This guy could be a gamer who knows?   His college record speaks for itself and if he has any potential as a pro remains to be seen.    It could be very interesting....

At the very least we need to find a kicker to put on the PR. As with every position players are needed to run drills. Returners need to have more than one kicker in TC to get their chances etc.

This player could be a keeper or an early release.

Staton stat's improved substantially in his last season. That's a good sign for the young guy.

I'm more intrigued by the chatter from Pallardy and "Always Miss" Milo.

Maybe the oldsters are looking at the dearth of decent kickers in the CFL and thinking there may be a market for them?

Now, I want to see some chatter from Meddy!

Man our scouts and management are great, keep these battles coming, do folks think we will have room for a kicker on the PR?

We kept an import kicker ( Mourtada ) on the PR the entire season in 2022.  No reason we don't do that in 2023. Whether it turns out to be an import or a Canadian, depth is always needed.

Still wondering if we draft and retain a Global for that purpose this season. In either case IMO it will be difficult to have either on the AR unless he absolutely wins the starting role. I fully expect Mauro to be our 2nd global on the AR and having an import as a DI is difficult. Neither situation is impossible but not the 1st choice I'd imagine.
