Toronto Argonauts rule out Jake Herslow against Ottawa Redblacks

The Toronto Argonauts will be without American receiver Jake Herslow when they host the Ottawa Redblacks on Saturday. The team released its official depth chart on Friday morning.

The 28-year-old started the team's last four games at slotback and made 11 catches for 146 yards and one touchdown. He was a non-participant in practice this week due to a head/chest injury and has been placed on the six-game injured list.

Solomon Davis will start in place of Herslow. The six-foot-one, 205-pound target played 12 games at Central Michigan in 2024, where he caught 19 passes for 350 yards and three touchdowns. The native of Brighton, Tenn. started his collegiate career at Valparaiso University, an FCS program located in Indiana, where he made 94 receptions for 1,415 yards and 10 touchdowns across 34 games. This will be his first CFL game.

The Argonauts have made only one other change to the roster, as Jack Cassar has been placed on the six-game injured list (hand).

The veteran special teamer has tallied 25 defensive tackles, 76 special teams tackles, two forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, and one pass knockdown over 80 career regular-season CFL games, helping the Argonauts win two Grey Cups.

Jordan Herdman-Reed, who signed with the team on Thursday, has been moved to the active roster in his place. The 32-year-old has played 105 career regular-season CFL games with the B.C. Lions, Saskatchewan Roughriders, and Argonauts, recording 96 defensive tackles, 73 special teams tackles, three sacks, and one forced fumble.

The Ottawa Redblacks have made a dozen changes to their roster for Saturday's game against the Toronto Argonauts. The team released its official depth chart on Friday morning.

Five of the alterations have come to the team's starting lineup on defence, as Isaiah Mack and Luiji Vilain will start along the defensive line, and Christian Matthew, Adrian Frye, and Travian Blaylock will start in the secondary.

Mack signed with the team earlier this week. The six-foot-one, 320-pound defender has previously been a member of the Tennessee Titans, New England Patriots, Denver Broncos, Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, Seattle Seahawks, New York Jets, Washington Commanders, and Miami Dolphins. He played 25 career NFL regular-season games, making 17 total tackles, three tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, and one fumble recovery.

Vilain made five starts with the Redblacks at defensive end earlier this season, recording five defensive tackles, one special teams tackle, one tackle for loss, and one pass knockdown. The six-foot-four, 258-pound native of Ottawa missed the team's most recent game against the B.C. Lions with a knee injury.

Matthew has dressed for two regular-season games this year in a depth role. The 29-year-old was originally a seventh-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. He played 20 regular-season NFL games with the Cardinals and Chicago Bears, registering 20 total tackles and three pass knockdowns. This will be his first CFL start.

Frye has returned to the starting lineup after completing a stint on Ottawa's six-game injured list. The six-foot, 205-pound defender has recorded 49 defensive tackles, six special teams tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and one pass knockdown over 19 career regular-season CFL games.

Blaylock joined the Redblacks last month and this will be his first regular-season appearance with the team. The 26-year-old played one regular-season game with the B.C. Lions last year, recording three defensive tackles. The five-foot-eleven, 195-pound native of Humble, Texas also attended training camp with the Edmonton Elks this year, though he was released among final cuts.

Benny Sapp III has moved from field-side halfback to strong-side linebacker in place of C.J. Reavis, who has been placed on the six-game injured list due to a hamstring injury. The six-foot, 198-pound defender has tallied 38 defensive tackles, two special teams tackles, one tackle for loss, and four pass knockdowns this season.

Cleyon Laing, Amani Bledsoe, and Kori Roberson Jr. have each been added to the active roster in depth roles along the defensive line. Laing just completed a stint on the six-game injured list, while Bledsoe and Roberson Jr. both joined the roster earlier this week.

A.J. Allen has returned to the lineup in a depth role at linebacker after recovering from a hip injury. Michael Brodrique and Kyahva Tezino will also dress in depth roles at the same position. Just turned on the game - Not sure if these two guys are who I am seeing (Isaiah Mack and Luiji Vilain) on the DL for Ottawa but whoever is playing is really owning the line of scrimmage. Makes you wonder why the Bombers can not find decent DL dudes!

On the play immediately after they throw a Coxie TD.  When have the refs & command stopped calling OPI when the REC full-extend arm pushes away the DB?  I've noticed this a few times this season.

It appears that if you do the arm-block early enough in the route, and then stop in the last 5-10Y, the refs don't care.  So early in the route you get the separation you need by cheating with a locked arm for 5-10Y, then out-speed the DB to the spot because he can't recover after being pushed back.

Since it's earlier in the route, the only shots that show it are the live shot and the final replace (#4?) they showed right before the next play.  The final view shows it clear as day, and I can get a great still if you don't believe it.

For taller RECs with long arms we should be coaching this up if the league doesn't flag it.  You can gain a huge advantage.  And the DB doesn't even have the option of doing the ol' stiff arm rip-down you use to combat this!!  Nield, Clercius, Pokey are big enough to make this work.

4Q8:32 The OPI "mugging" and challenge: Glad we get a little more scrutiny on a mugging, but man this was a really cheeseball mugging.  And it wasn't really a classic mugging, it's clearly a block/pick to open up the route for the real target behind.

However, it's interesting because the TOR guy doesn't really put much hands on the mugger.  What makes it too obvious, and thus less interesting, is that he fell down, which makes it much harder to argue.

Maybe that's a lesson... if you're getting mugged: fall down.  We already know you can avoid DPI on mugging if you keep your hands out of it.  Nice to have another tool to consider.

Dinwiddie is about as dumb as Mace was with challenges today.  I could have told both with 100% certainty after seeing the live shot and first replay that they weren't going to win.  Do no HC's watch every game and see command's tendencies?

Wow, OTT OL & QB pressure problems looks so much like our own.  QB holding on too long and taking sacks.  Marginal OL that can't hold +0 or -1 people more than 2.5s, sometimes not even 2.0s.  No hot routes when needed, at least not all the time.  Or QBs who are too greedy and want that deep one-on-one because the heat means there's something out there.

Ah, to have a league top-3 OL again, where you don't worry about this stuff on 90% of snaps...
