RBs going outside

Is it just me or did many RBs this week kick their runs outside, and usually to great success?  Not many were doing the up the gut WPG-style attack.  There were a few tries, but they were often stuffed.

And lots of front-7-in-the-backfield party crashers tackling for losses too.

Is this a function of week 1 OLs being weaker than week 1 DLs?  Easier to seal the edge than plow the holes through the A&B-gaps?

I wonder how WPG will play it.  I hope Brady is patient and kicks it outside if the holes aren't there under our revamped OL.

I believe a strong run game needs to a steady diet of up the gut to be successful.  Yes mix it up but when the weather turns and your OL has beat up their DL it's bully ball and the most efficient way is north/south.

I didn't notice, but now I will ;)

I'm not sure if we saw more outside runs this week than prior seasons or what not but Brady Oliveira is primarily an A and B gap runner. Buck mitigated this somewhat with Demski back there on occasion and those receiver sweeps/screens but new ideas are always welcome.

We're absolutely going to see BC concentrate between the tackles with Streveler and Oliveria on Thursday. Collaros and that passing game can widen the linebackers but Strevy is not going to get that same respect I wouldn't think.

Should be an interesting thing to keep an eye on though.

Good point.  However, Strev can be a outside runner too, especially if he sucks the contain in tight with fakes up the gut.  Or a REC comes in and gets a good seal block.  (Remember the '19 WSF?)

I agree we should have a plan to widen the D, maybe some wide out hitch screens and other behind-LoS passes / sweeps.  We actually did a lot of this in the PS.

It also should be easy to sneak RECs behind the DBs because everyone will be expecting a short/mid game with "can't pass" Strev.  Maybe D.Mitchell can really shine here.

I think the philosophy is to run a counter off the jet sweep whereby you get the defense shifting to stop the jet sweep and when they do, you run up the gut on the same play, and we have the perfect personnel for that in Demski or other speedy reciever to run the jet, and then Brady to pound it up the middle and catch the defense over playing the jet.
