QB Jarret Doege to dress behind Tre Ford, could see playing time for Elks
By 3Down Staff -October 11, 2024

The Edmonton Elks will have an eye toward the future when they visit the rival Stampeders on Saturday, making veteran quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson a healthy scratch for the penultimate game of the season.

As expected, Canadian dual-threat passer Tre Ford will get the start after not throwing a pass since Sept. 21. The 26-year-old has gone 2-1 as a starter this season, throwing for 604 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions and rushing 14 times for 92 yards.

However, Ford is not the only young quarterback expected to see action, as second-year pivot Jarret Doege will dress as a backup for just the third time this year and could get into the game according to reports. The 26-year-old appeared in 16 games as a rookie in 2023 and started one, finishing the year 42-of-65 for 587 yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions. He has not thrown a pass this year.

Both quarterbacks are in contract years and will be auditioning for a role in the future of the organization.

Returning to the lineup after a personal absence last week is defensive lineman Noah Curtis. The second-year Canadian, who was drafted by the Elks in the fourth round of the 2023 CFL Draft, has had a breakout campaign to this point, notching 21 tackles and six sacks in 15 games. Rookie linebacker Olivier Muembi has been moved to the practice roster as a result.

The Elks (5-11) will visit the Calgary Stampeders (4-10-1) on Saturday, Oct. 12 with kickoff slated for 3:00 p.m. EDT. Both teams have already been eliminated from postseason contention.

Veteran QB Matthew Shiltz makes first start for Calgary Stampeders
By 3Down Staff -October 11, 2024

Journeyman backup quarterback Matthew Shiltz will make his first start as a member of the Calgary Stampeders on Saturday.

The 31-year-old has dressed for eight games this season but saw his first action last week in relief of Jake Maier, going four-of-five passing for 99 yards and a touchdown. He also scrambled twice for 26 yards on the ground.

Shiltz started three games with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2023, posting a 2-1 record. He completed 67.1 percent of his passes for a career-high 1,556 yards, seven touchdowns, and five interceptions. The six-foot-two, 205-pound passer has thrown for 4,456 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions over 86 career games as a member of the Montreal Alouettes, Ticats, and Stampeders. He has also carried the ball 103 times for 651 yards and four touchdowns.

Among the other changes to the roster, Canadian receiver Clark Barnes returns to the starting lineup. In 13 games, he has recorded 38 receptions for 461 yards and three touchdowns. American rookies Cam Echols (head) — who has posted 27 receptions for 335 yards and three majors — and Ishmael Hyman (calf) are both out this week, with Canadian Rysen John drawing in.

Canadian defensive back Nick Statz will be a healthy scratch and defensive end Anthony Federico will head to the practice squad. Former NFL linebacker Marquel Lee will dress for the first time and running back Kylin Hill will also suit up as insurance.

The Calgary Stampeders (4-10-1) will host the Edmonton Elks (5-11) on Saturday, October 12 at 3:00 p.m. EDT.

Nope, the team just wants to get a look at the other guys.

So, MBT to the PR or IR?  He has to agree to go on the IR if not injured... PR means he's effectively a FA...

I dont believe players need to agree to be placed on the 1 game injured list.

He would just be designated as a healthy scratch.

Who knows when nothing is up to date, they left MBT floating in space.

MBT sucks. Ford gives them a shot at winning, and will put points up for the Elks guaranteed.

Schiltz starts for Calgary, yikes, they are desparate. I would be getting rid of Maier and making a hard play on VA to turn that team around. Edmonton should do the same.

It's going to be interesting to see where VA ends up and what someone gives up in value. While the Lions may want to send him out east, there are less opportunities. I think it boils down to Hamilton.

I wouldn't count out Ottawa either. Masoli is duct taped together and Dru Brown hasn't instilled much confidence in being able to stay healthy or play at a consistently high level as a starter in Ottawa.

Ottawa is a longer shot IMO than the Elks, Stamps of Hamilton. Part of it will be who do coaches want to tie their future to in those cities.

Edmonton and Calgary could have new coaches in 2025. Edmonton may lose both MBT and Ford in free agency. Older QB's like Masoli, BLM or even Harris may be moving on.  Maier is probably done in Calgary.

Ottawa has invested a fairly large contract in Brown. I don't remember if some of it is guaranteed. However Brown + VA will be an expensive hit to their SMS. Add to that what they give up in trade from not an exceptional roster overall may also hurt.

Anyway. Just a guess that Hamilton, Edmonton and then the Stamps in that order are my guesses where he ends up.

I agree, Ottawa is not ready to give up on Dru Brown yet, and bringing in Adams would just muddle the picture. They will have to decide in the offseason if they want to hang onto Masoli or let him go, with Tyrie Adams and Crum behind Brown not sure they need to retain him.
