There isn't another place kicker on the roster. Is Castillo there by default?

lol - because that's the same.

And for the record, there were a crap ton of place kickers brought in (like at least 5).
My wife is amazing!

Dru Brown 2-2 comp 78 yds 1TD 0 Int 158.3 Efficiency. This is good. We need to re-sign this guy before next season or someone else gets him.

I just finished re-watching the game. Yes we did rotate players on defence in Q4 essentially by committee. It was Cole that forced the incomplete pass on 3rd down, not Jackson.  But Jackson, Maruo, Briggs also saw snaps. Bennett seemed to play more later in the game as well.

Maruo is being so effective in his snaps, and getting a ton this season, that might it be difficult to slot Hansen back in if/when he returns??  Remember, we're "losing" our other usual GLOB spot on our punter.  Best situation is when Hansen comes back so does Gauthier.

Do you recall a specific time you saw Jackson on D?  I didn't spot him, and I want to see how he slots in.  What position?  In "garbage time" we did put in a lot of backups on D.

He was lining up at DE near the end of the game.

Seriously? You're comparing a veteran CFL kicker and Ex-Bomber to a rookie Canadian back up???????

Not to mention that a kicker will seldom be injured or even touched during a game. He won't be part of a rotation for plays on defence.

We have 7 defensive players on our IR. Not a kicker to be seen.

True....in the era of kick specialists it is highly unlikely they are ever injured in a game.....yet it's still a remote possibility.    In the days when players who place kicked or punted played in other positions it was more likely to happen.    Can't recall a kicker or punting specialist being injured recently however it may have occurred at some point in time?   Anyone have any stats on this?   There are non-contact injuries that occur Ie pulled hamstrings etc etc

It was more about the comment trying to argue against Bennett being a default player. He might be on the roster to meet ratio. OTOH if Hansen and Haba were on the AR he wouldn't be getting the reps he's getting now.

Actually if we had those other 2 players currently injured we might have seen Kelly or Murphy on the roster.

We can't even be certain if not for ratio we might see Fox or Garbutt on the roster in his place.

I don't know if Bennett has a CFL future. Very small sample size and our expectations are unreasonable for the young player.

That isn't the gist of suggesting he's a default player as the only Canadian DL available to us.

https://3downnation.com/2023/08/08/bens-breakdown-how-the-bombers-used-data-from-their-first-game-to-beat-the-lions-deep-in-the-rematch/

This is a great article.  I love the breakdown.  I said in the week before that we would have to out-coach and out-braintrust BC who clearly "out-thunk" us in the first game.  3down talking about figuring out what BC was doing and then using the probabilities against them is a great description of the chess match going on.

MOS always makes it sound like they (the Bombers) don't do that kind of stuff, but clearly they do, and they're very good at it.  And I want to see a lot more of it going forward, especially into the playoffs.  I'm convinced we lost the GC because TOR out-brained and out-coached us.  Thus the "puzzle piece" this year isn't so much a player (thought Kenny helps) as (maybe) a brain-effort quantity.

As (still, probably) the "team to beat", contenders will want to put all of their energy into beating us in the brain department.  As such they'll often be throwing whole new game strategies at us, like BC did in the first game.  I expect to see a completely different game plan from BC in the 3rd (final) game.  I hope we have a wacky and new plan for them, too.

Watching the game again, and I don't think the Kenny OPI on the deep pass in the 1st Q was legit.  The main reason: there's no arm extension.  In OPI (which is rare) we almost always see a full arm extension.  I'm pretty sure that's what the refs are trained to focus on.  Kenny's arms are always curled up and he's doing a bunch (ya, a lot) of little swishy pushes ("hand fighting").  Kind of like you'd swish at a wasp at your picnic.

The other main thing is: is he redirecting #14?  I don't think so.  Sayles seems lost out there and has no clue where the ball is or that it's underthrown.  His momentum is what carries him past the pass.

The last possibility is: is Lawler impeding #14 to the ball?  I don't think so either.  Again, Sayles has no idea what he's doing and isn't particularly trying to go anywhere.

The worst thing I can see Lawler do is get hands in #14's face, but that's well before the ball arrives.

As such I think we would have won a challenge.  It was like 55 yards, so maybe even worth it, even though early in the game.  Lots of great, clear camera angles too.  But as we've learned so many times (including this game), best to keep your challenge until the 4th, as you need to keep the refs honest.  But this play would have at least been a better use of the challenge than the Willie HC.

I don't think it was OPI either. Lawler was just trying to get to the ball, Sayles as you say had no clue where the ball was, and it was basically the usual hand fighting going on. Its just that Sayles trajectory made it seem like Lawler pushed him out of the way more strongly than what really occured. Having said that, I don't know if we would have won that challenge, command centre does not like to over turn the ruling on the field unless its completely black and white.

Sayles got terrorized pretty much all game.

Maybe the official felt bad for him...? ;D

I'm not sure the call was wrong, and Lawler didn't protest alot...  Sayles and Lawler ended up going in totally different directions as the ball arrived, Lawler could have made the cut that fast, but Sayles went the other direction in a way that suggested he was pushed off of.

Was it a case of Sayles making a wrong turn?  Maybe.  But I can see why it was called.  When I saw it live, I expected the flag...

Lee (#6) got it worse.  If you said we'd blow up Lee (who is a superb mega-vet DB) for like 200 yards pre-game I'd have said you were crazy.

I've watched it quite a lot now and I'm convinced Sayles had no idea what was going on.  And what Kenny was doing wasn't making it any clearer.  We can see now he was trying to come back for the ball, but it was very chaotic at the moment and I don't think Sayles was figuring out what Kenny was trying to do.

I'm positive Sayles never locates the ball, he was mostly just looking back for it so he gets that "out" in a potential DPI.

Looking back at the game as a whole I think the easiest overturns, in this order would have been:

Biggie UR (other games in the same weekend had worse and they weren't flagged)
Lawler OPI
Willie HC (still need to study this one more)

For some reason we decided to challenge the most difficult of the 3.  :-\
