I don't usually tip at take out unless I see an higher level of service. Your suppose to be able to press 4 to skip the tipping option.
I don't mind tipping at IGF because they are all students or low income people.
I hope everyone at the stand is getting an equal share.

I usually tip for this reason. I also throw a fiver into the tip jar at the bike valet a few times a year so those people (who I assume are volunteers) get a little something for a service that I really appreciate.

But that's the thing, are they getting tipped out? With cashless service, it's hard to tell.

I dislike when places go straight to like 18% as the lowest suggestion- kind of a guilt trip. I?m not talking necessarily about IGF here.

When at IGF, I?m usually buying beer or a rye so I select the cash option and give a dollar every time. It?s probably chintzy to some but I think it?s fair if you?re just pouring a cup or cracking a can. Happy to give a little to the front line workers who I almost always find pleasant and talkative, but I?m also not there to compensate their wage overly substantially.

Anyway, that works for me and strikes a nice balance.

The food service industry is well known for abusing their staff in this regard. It's honestly more likely than not that the staff is getting screwed over on tips.

I hate the automatic suggestion for tip amounts.  I do or do not tip what I like.  That's the premise for tipping. Do a nice caring encounter = tip.
Hard to do with the server being so pre-occupied with the little forced tip calculator.

I am a former bartender, before the computer age.  I find getting a drink from the Bombers bar impersonal, and almost non-interactive.
Note to bombers...hire pretty women to serve and act as bartenders.
Guys are great at the Pinnacle Club. Women at concourse kiosks at least smile, make it seem like I was important, and hurriedly got my beer.

Bring tipcups back.  I usually over-tip, as the people working don't make a lot if at all above minimum wage.  At least tips can get them an extra $20.00 /night.

Always try and tip your server...at least a dollar.

Very true, with the tip option all money goes directly to the owner of the concession and it's up to them to decide how much to pass on to the employees.  The workers have no way of knowing if they are being treated fairly or not.

I tip usually but just to get out of line as quickly as possible. The system is annoying but whatever it really does not matter to me.

Select other amount then enter 0 then enter again? not rocket science

It may not be rocket science, but it does confuse some people, it also takes extra time....Extra time while people try and figure it out or press extra buttons to get to zero slows down the service...

It's also not rocket science to come to the conclusion that it is a hassle and takes time, and if becomes such certain people will just avoid it all together. If people avoid it all together the game day experience and profits go down.

Do you? That's debatable.

Tipping is predominantly a North American thing. And it's due to greedy corporate interests and speaks to a broader issue related to underpaid, overworked employees in the service industry.

Agreed. It's notoriously bad.

Pay people fairly and justly and there would be no need for tips.

That said, in line with the dumb tipping culture here, I will usually tip a buck at concession stands at IGF (or similar venues).

"Pooled tips", which is the only way they can mete out tips at that venue, does not reward service at all, if anything it rewards the worst employees equally as the best, which is NOT what tips are for.  Period.

In cases where a server gets the tip directly, or a significant portion and then tips out their support staff, I have no issues tipping when I get exemplary service.  I will always tip in cash even if I pay by card.

I have no idea what the IGF food services group does with tip money, if they take a chunk for collecting it (I have heard of places that do take a substantial part of the tips, and then disburse the balance as taxable wages to staff).   Regardless, for the job the staff / volunteers are doing, this is not a service that should be tipped, in my opinion.  If they were coming down teh stands like at a ball game, and making a show of vending dogs, beers or ice cream, I'd have no issue letting them "keep the change" on a $4 dog or a $9 beer.  But standing behind a counter handing out items, no.

Seen both. My sister sold beer at the old stadium as a struggling student. Also currently I know a good looking young nurse who works at IGF just for the tips. Nurses make $46 an hour at top of the scale FYI.

Ya, even with the pre-selected tip options it's like 5 keypresses just to buy a gatorade!  The staff have learned that it takes so long they just turn away to talk with their friends for the minute it takes the customer to figure it all out.

Hitting "other amount" may sound like "not rocket science" but when you're wrangling kids, holding food in the other hand, sweating in 30C after climbing to 200-level and a 2km walk, and not wanting to miss much of the game, and have 20 ornery people impatiently waiting behind you, you're not going to study the options and try to discern the way out of tipping.

It really should have the big buttons: 10%, 15%, 20%, NO TIP.  That would be a quicker/fairer way to give everyone their choice.
