Blue Bombers extend contract of defensive end Willie Jefferson

WINNIPEG, MB., November 26, 2022 - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has agreed to terms with all-star defensive end Willie Jefferson on a one-year contract extension. Jefferson was a pending free agent in February.

Jefferson (6-7, 242, Stephen F. Austin; born: January 31, 1991, in Beaumont, TX) returns in 2023 for what will be his fourth season with the Blue Bombers and ninth in the Canadian Football League.

The Blue Bombers' Most Outstanding Defensive player in 2022, Jefferson was also named a West Division All-Star after leading the club in quarterback sacks with seven, adding 33 tackles, one interception for a touchdown, two forced fumbles, and 10 pass knockdowns.

During the 2022 season, Jefferson also became the first player in CFL history to record 50 sacks and 50 pass knockdowns. In his three years with the Blue Bombers, he has recorded 26 sacks, four interceptions, two touchdowns and 36 knockdowns ? including the 16 he posted in 2019, a league record for defensive linemen.

Jefferson is a four-time CFL All-Star who was also honoured as the CFL's Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 2019. Jefferson first came to the CFL with Edmonton in 2014, signing with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2016 before joining the Blue Bombers in 2019. He has appeared in 126 CFL games in his career, including the last 50 with the Blue Bombers.

Sweet! Willie was a must. Would MOS really walk away from his boys? Hmmm I think not.

I'm hoping you're right and likely not....however that loss had a profound effect on him as it did other players.....including Nic Demski whose comments were more like he wanted to wait and see what's going down which for me was surprising.   Perhaps he's looking for a long term deal?  Yet for players like Brady Olivera the loss will provide fuel to work even harder during the off season.   I'm crossing all my fingers and toes. that he stays with the Bombers though!

Of all the players, I wanted Brady to win it as it was his first season coming out of the shadows of Andrew Harris...who incidentally rubbed it in before the game with comments like "I'd like to take the 3-peat away from them"....or words to that effect.   Am i happy for AH33?   Ah....no because those comments rubbed me the wrong way (again) as well as the entire City of Winnipeg,   I wish sometimes Harris would just STFU and keep his comments and thoughts to himself.....however his LARGE ego along with his LARGE chip on his shoulder precedes him.   It paid off for Pinball though who knew what he was getting, and who is now 8-0 in Grey Cups as a player coach and GM.   Incidentally and ironically MOS went to 7-1 with that loss.   I'm crossing all my fingers and toes. that he stays with the Bombers though!

Let's not start another debate on AH. This is about WJ5.

You're projecting your seething hatred onto others, enough already.

As suggested, let's keep this thread focussed on Willie Jefferson.

Willie J was one of the top 'must signs' IMO. Glad we got it done so early.

Great news.  His stats weren't huge.  His GC stats weren't huge.  But I really can't think of a DE I'd rather have on our line.

Does his early signing mean that we got the deal we wanted from him?  A little bump in pay.  I'm not sure he's earned a massive raise after a so-so year.

I love how KW is getting on top of these things early this year.  We often wait and trickle the re-signings out deep into FA.

Now: where's the talk about Jeffcoat.  Dude may be even better than Willie (overall) the last 1.5 years but he spends huge chunks of the season in the tub and then can't finish the GC.  I'm pretty sure he's the only Bomber to limp off and not finish.  We could have really used him on that Kelly 19 yard dagger-thrust romp.

Any players receiving even a small "bump" in pay will result in someone else getting a hair cut (cut).
