Saskatchewan Roughriders rule out Dohnte Meyers, welcome back Brett Lauther against Argonauts
By 3Down Staff -October 9, 2025
The Saskatchewan Roughriders have ruled out receiver Dohnte Meyers for Friday's game against the Toronto Argonauts due to an ankle injury.
The 25-year-old native of Atlanta, Ga. has made 65 catches for 1,056 yards and eight touchdowns over 15 games this season, his second in the CFL. He is currently ranked second on the Roughriders in receiving yardage, sitting exactly 100 yards back of teammate KeeSean Johnson.
The Green and White have promoted Joe Robustelli from the practice roster to start in Meyers' place at field-side wide receiver. The six-foot-three, 220-pound target is no stranger to being a first-stringer, having started 10 games so far this season. The 28-year-old has caught 33 passes for 469 yards and two touchdowns on the year.
Saskatchewan has also welcomed veteran kicker Brett Lauther back to the lineup after he missed last week's game against the Ottawa Redblacks due to a back injury.
The native of Truro, N.S. has made only 68.9 percent of his field goal attempts this season, by far his lowest average since he arrived in Riderville in 2018. Campbell Fair, who missed two converts in his regular-season CFL debut last week when he played in place of Lauther, has been moved to the practice roster.
Saskatchewan signed American kicker Michael Hughes this week, though he will not dress against Toronto. Head coach Corey Mace indicated that using an American kicker is an option for the Roughriders moving forward, so he may yet get a chance to play before the season is done.
The Roughriders have also made a swap at kick returner with Mario Alford reentering the lineup in place of Shawn Bane Jr. Alford hasn't dressed since Week 15 but has been productive on the year, returning 31 punts for 357 yards and 25 kickoffs for 697 yards and a touchdown. Bane Jr. has landed on the one-game injured list as a healthy scratch.
As announced on Wednesday, Saskatchewan will be without Rolan Milligan Jr. this week as he suffered a foot/knee injury against the Redblacks, which kept him out of practice all week. The 31-year-old native of Lake Wales, Fla. has made 52 defensive tackles, one special teams tackle, four interceptions, and one touchdown over 15 starts this season. This will be his first absence of the 2025 season.
Sheldrick Redwine will make his first career CFL start in Milligan Jr.'s spot at boundary halfback. The 28-year-old native of Miami, Fla. was a fourth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and had stints with six different NFL teams prior to joining the Roughriders this year. He dressed for last week's win in a depth role but didn't record any statistics.
Marcus Sayles will start at boundary cornerback despite missing practice this week due to a knee injury. Veteran defensive back Nafees Lyon, who joined the team as a free agent this week, will dress in a backup role behind Sayles.
Canadian receiver Mitch Picton has been moved back to the active roster in a depth role, while special teamer Melique Straker has been placed on the one-game injured list.
Meanwhile, the Toronto Argonauts have made five changes to their starting lineup ahead of Friday's game, which will see Jarret Doege get the start under centre.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders (11-4) will host the Toronto Argonauts (5-11) at Mosaic Stadium in Regina on Friday, October 10 with kickoff slated for 9:00 p.m. EDT. The Roughriders are coming off a modest win over the Ottawa Redblacks, while the Argonauts were crushed by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
The weather forecast in Regina calls for a high of 19 degrees with sunny conditions. The game will be broadcast on TSN and RDS2 in Canada and CFL+ internationally. Radio listeners can tune-in on TSN 1050 in Toronto and 620 CKRM in Regina.

Toronto Argonauts make five changes to starting lineup for game against Roughriders
By 3Down Staff -October 9, 2025
The Toronto Argonauts have made five changes to their starting lineup this week for what will be their second-last game of the 2025 season.
Jarret Doege will be under centre in place of Nick Arbuckle, who has reportedly been shut-down for the season due to a shoulder injury he suffered early in last week's loss against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The former Edmonton Elks quarterback threw for 323 yards, two touchdowns, and four interceptions against the Tabbies and has now thrown seven touchdowns and nine interceptions over 36 career regular-season games.
The Argonauts have made two changes along the offensive line after giving up nine sacks last week with Brandon Kemp returning from injury and Sage Doxtater moving to the one-game injured list due to an elbow problem. Kemp will start at left tackle where Hampton Ergle, who have been moved back down to the practice roster, struggled last week. John Bosse, who was a third-round pick in the 2024 CFL Draft out of the University of Calgary, will start at right guard.
Isaac Darkangelo will start at middle linebacker in place of Wynton McManis, who is reportedly out for the rest of the year due to a groin injury. Now in his second year with the Argonauts, Darkangelo has made 42 defensive tackles, 19 special teams tackles, four forced fumbles, and one sack over 16 games this year.
Boundary halfback Darius Bratton is a healthy scratch this week with Willie Drew moving over from field-side cornerback to fill his spot. Delonte Hood, who made three starts earlier this year, will start in Drew's usual spot. The 24-year-old native of Washington, D.C. has made 11 defensive tackles in his young CFL career.
The Toronto Argonauts (5-11) will visit the Saskatchewan Roughriders (11-4) at Mosaic Stadium in Regina on Friday, October 10 with kickoff slated for 9:00 p.m. EDT. The Roughriders are coming off a modest win over the Ottawa Redblacks, while the Argonauts were crushed by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Big wind in this game.
Argos net 21 yards on a 74 yard punt single.
Riders drive the field for a TD. Not sure if decision to go for 2 was wind related or chasing points. Robustelli drops the C2.
Argos muff kickoff that hung up in wind. Lucky to get the ball back.
Alford muffs a punt.
Mirco with a short punt into wind.
Argos get 1 first down to put Hajrullahu into FG range.
argos keeping it close even with taking bad penalties
Come on Argos, you need to score please
Harris gets the ball off so fast, you cant give their recievers 10 yard cushions
Harris wasn't so fast on the 'not fumble'. I agree with Forde in that it looked like Harris was trying to tuck the ball after a pump fake.
eearlier this year Dimwiddie had said that he couldnt put Kelly in this year cause he doesnt trust his oline ..you can see why
The Toronto O-Line takes a lot of penalties because they are not good.
Doege has his head bounce off the turf. It was the correct call by the injury spotter to pull him.
Horn looks good!
Toronto 5th string better than our 2nd
Argos put Doege back in and he lasts one play before leaving again.
Tucker Horn looked good in pre-season and started the year as the #2 QB. We now get to see how he performs with real reps. Looks decent so far.
Someone needs to teach Dustin Nielsen how to pronounce Hajrullahu.
35 mins in... CFL desperately needs a tuck rule. When the QB is pulling it back in on a rethink and fumbles, it should be a fumble. Every season this happens once or twice. Always irks me. They get saved by being incompetent butter fingers. You want to talk about a "reward for failure"...
The problem with SSK is they are playing with attitude like they are the best. They aren't. But they think they are. That is almost as dangerous. Morale and mindset is a third of the game.
2021 Bombers would waste this sad sack team. This SSK team is probably the worst team to actually win the west in a long time.
If by some miracle they make it to the cup, Alexander/MTL will waste them. If they don't win the WDF (hopefully at the hands of us) they'll fall back to earth real quick.
I'll hand it to Mace making these guys actually believe. That's some first class coaching. If Dickenson The Lesser was still the guy they'd be just as sucky as their missed-playoff years. I guess taking the guys bowling every week isn't the preferred way to run a team.
Boy, AH33 isn't just a RB coach there. He's beside Mace and all buddy-buddy as much as Mike Miller or Boudreaux are/were beside MOS.
If AH33 is a future legit coach (one of the "big 3", not just a RB coach) then we may have made a huge mistake kicking him out of WFC. He certainly has upped mediocre-Oullette's game by leaps and bounds.
Oullette said in an interview the other day that no one hypes him up like AH does, and that he's the best in the world at it.
Doege head-turf hit before halftime -- once again showing why QBs should be wearing something to protect back-of-head-to-turf hits. This shouldn't be rocket science. This is basically the hit that takes Zach out 90% of the time.
Where are all the fans? Pathetic turn out for a wins-the-west game with 19C weather. Shame on you SSK fans.

The TOR OL is at least as good as ours, on paper. They still have guys from the last GC, where they had the best-in-league OL. But ours is on the uptrend, TOR is in the "we suck" downward mind-virus spiral.
And I'm not sure I believe that statement anyhow. Crap OL or not, you need your star QB in to win games. If Kelly was magically healthy all season, TOR would be fighting for 1st or 2nd in E, regardless of OL. Kelly's mobility can easily make up for weak hoggies. Not like Arbuckle hasn't had decent protection most of the season!
2Q1:59 The great "catch" by Emilus on the rail while being pushed out: THIS IS THE EXACT SAME CATCH THEY STOLE FROM KENNY IN THE '24 GC. This is really aggravating.
They said Kenny's catch was not a completion because his heel touched the rail after the toe touched in bounds. Same thing just happened here. But for Emilus they call it complete.
And then booth guys say on the replay that "this is a new rule" where the Kenny GC thing is now counted as a catch. Did anyone else hear about this change?? I didn't. And it's not in the rulebook under the "new for 2025" changes.
Did anyone else hear about this change?
Not like it helps us win that cup -- too little too late. It's a stupid rule anyhow where you can literally touch any other part of your body to the rail and it's complete, but heaven forbid your heel touch.

There was a UR on the play, my question is why are defensive players allowed to drive the Qb backwards in a clear attempt to injure him?? That play should be taken out, if the defender chooses to drive the Qb backwards into the turf, give him a RP 25 yder and kick him out of the game. not Sure what Qb s could wear to protect their brains from that trauma, the solution is eliminate the boneheads making the play. Remember when fat D linemen used to body slam their weight down on a Qb, well, they eliminated that, they've eliminated to suflex wwe tackle, eliminate this calculated attempt to injure.

If you strapped 2 feather/foam small but thick pillows to the back of their helmets it would stop half the concussions. But since that looks (and probably feels) silly, come up with a high-tech alternative that achieves the same effect. Some sort of high-tech super light and open "crash structure" sticking 6" out of the back of the helmet would probably do it. Would look dumb, but would instantly fix this problem.
It's a simple issue of reducing the G-force the head absorbs. You do that by spreading out the deceleration over a longer time period. My idea would achieve that. All this "gazoo" protection on the sides/top when half the time it's the turf to the back of the head, and gazoo doesn't help with it at all (didn't help Dru!).
As for D's being more careful: ya, this particular hit was quite excessive. No need to drive to the turf to achieve the tackle/sack/hit. But don't worry, Johston is on it... oh wait, no he's only worried about goal post location and getting rid of the 55YL that touched him in the "no feeling" place when he was 4.
Wow 3Q12:40 Oullette -> Casey fumble with command overturning it on review... Riderfans will be apoplectic. They always accuse command of only stepping in at random when it hurts SSK.
The angles they showed us didn't show anything worth overturning. I'll assume they have better angles?
This will fuel their tinfoil. MAX TINFOIL!!
And how does anyone out-strongarm Oullette in a pile? Dude is more jacked than Jeff Hecht -- literally eats every meal at Popeyes, and I don't mean the chicken joint!
Wind must have dropped off in the 4th quarter as the kicking didn't seem to be affected like it was earlier in the game.
Somewhat surprised to see the ball spot challenge overturned although I think it was a first down. 2 good angles for that one helped.
Boy, CFL/command/commish really want SSK to get to the cup this year. And it makes sense: everyone not in WPG would hate to see us in another cup.
First, we get a spot change on a challenge and re-measure. When's the last time we saw that? I can't even recall the last time command granted a spot change on challenge, especially one that meant 1st down vs TOD. And strangely, where the chain ended up seems to have changed between the measurements... did they change where the start of the chain was? (Change where the dude pinched it.) Very weird overall.
Then they pick up that last RTP flag when it clearly was a legit call -- not for head hit, but because it was late. Hits like that after the ball is gone have often been called. We'd call it ticky-tack, but no reason to pick up a called flag. They basically just overrode the beat down the ref on the field that called it.
SSK fans will moan about the earlier command-stepping-in thing, but the above 2 were even more critical and more out of thin air.

Command setting all sorts of new precedent this season -- WITHOUT public memos to explain it like in '24.

Winning early and resting the big guns, then the bye, that has cost teams in the past and I think should be a real concern in Sask.
The fumble was recovered by Toronto. First time I've ever seen the mark changed on a review and I've been watching since the mid-60's.

I know nothing about concussions but I just read online, that helmets do not stop the movement inside the skull that causes concussions.
Anyway...There's something wrong with the concussion diagnosis procedure. Seeing Doege bang the back of his head on the ground, wincing, had to stop and kneel, and yet cleared on the sideline to play.
It's probably Good Enough to prevent lawsuits but possibly not much better than that.
Related, the Riders seem to be quite good at injuring quarterbacks.

Your prejudiced is really showing here. I am not a Rider Fan by any stretch but they are in fact the best team in the West and maybe overall. If you look at their talent levels across the board it is easy to understand why they are at the least, the best in the West. Whether that puts them in the Peg for the cup is yet to be seen. But give them their dues. They have a lot of talent across the board and have a good coach. Their recruiting in 2025 was far superior to what the Bombers accomplished.

I've always liked the idea of a dense, foam crumple-zone-type device that could be easily replaced once deployed. Snap in onto the back of the helmet and once it has done it's job throw it away and snap on a new one. Maybe combine it with an airbag-type device inside the helmet with a couple of small CO2 cartridges. C'mon Tecno, lets put our heads together and develop just such a device. We could make ... er, well maybe we wouldn't lose our shirts. LOL!

It comes down to physics, you think the protective equipment industry hasn't poured millions of dollars into researching this issue? A little more padding added to the back of the helmet isn't going to solve a physics problem, the Guardian Cap is an exercise in marketing and false appeasement, it does nothing to solve the problem. Realistically they would need air bag technology on the outside of the helmet to neutralize the force of colliding with the turf, and there's no practical way to trigger it before impact.
Much simpler to change the rules on player contact that punish the use of excess force. If Stewart Johnston wants to make games like last night more appealing to viewers, he'd institute rules that protect starting QB's more effectively. I believe the Argos were down to playing their #5 QB, who wants to watch that? Any knowledgeable fan is going to check the roster prior to game-time and figure out it's over before it starts, and won't waste time watching a non-competitive football game. If Chad Kelly was playing completely different scenario.
Argos only ran the ball once in the second half last night - a 1 yard run by QB3 Max Duggan on a QB draw.
Last night TSN refernced a tidbit from the CFL Game Notes:
Scoring Oddity: Saskatchewan scored 3 TDs in a 20-13 win over Ottawa but did not score a single kicking point - the first time in franchise history they've done so and won the game
Fact Check:
The Roughriders achieved this feat on October 5, 1946 in a 10-9 victory over the Calgary Stampeders. Regina also did it on November 9, 1929 in a 15-8 playoff win over the Calgary Tigers.
* In the CFL, regular season, playoff & Grey Cup records are all separate.
I would like them to implement a new rule whereby if you get 2 RTP calls in a game, you're out. You're clearly targeting injuring the Qb, and we have to eliminate that from the game. So 2 strikes and you're out. I'd also like them to implement a Rough Play fould on anyone driving the Qb into the ground, especially backwards/defenseless into the ground. Aoutmatic game ejection for that BS hit.

How about a team penalty? Two by the same team.... Throw out one of the two players that did the roughing.
Quote from: markf on October 11, 2025, 07:40:26 PMHow about a team penalty? Two by the same team.... Throw out one of the two players that did the roughing.
I m thinking they'd do it like the OC penalty in amateur football, 2 OC's by the same player, that player is out of the game. Players didn't care about the 10 yard penalty before, much like the don't care about the 15 yd penalty for RTP, start throwing guys out for their second foul, I tell you , immediately the BS stuff stopped. Right now in amateur football, 3 UR's by one player and that players out. So you can grab a face mask, or horse collar or RTP, but the thrie one you're done.
To cut down on injuries to #1 Qb's, which have been far too many this year, and these are the guys drawing the fans into the seats, the league has got to start hitting players with RP on egregous head contact fouls, like the one last night, you're done after 1. You don't have to drill the Qb into the ground, so don't. If it's just a RTP foul, you get 2 chances, the second one you're out. Pretty simple. Keep the #1 Qbs healthy and playing if you want to draw more fans into the stadiums. Nobody wants to see a #2 playing vs a #3 Qb and that's what we've had too many times this year
Quote from: dd on October 11, 2025, 06:45:46 PMI would like them to implement a new rule whereby if you get 2 RTP calls in a game, you're out.
Ya, but that would trigger almost never. Would have to work some other way. And any DQ also has to come with a big 25Y penalty. It has to hurt both the player AND the team in that game at that moment, so that teams start self-policing.

Maybe the NFL-watchers can chime in... maybe the headback-to-turf concussion problem is more of a CFL thing? If NFL QBs are smarter and move more or take more side-hits or whatever, then maybe "the industry" doesn't see the problem we have up here. Trust me, there's no money in just servicing a CFL-only problem!
As for my suggestion, yes it would work because it is external padding that acts as crumple zones to slow the impact / spread it out.
To see that it would work, picture Zach being driven back and his head landing on 5 ultra-soft pillows instead of the turf. Would that stop his concussion? 100%! Now, strap those pillows to the back of his head, instead. Is it identical? Yes! But 5 pillows is not conducive to movement, so take F1 crumple zone structures and apply that tech to make a 6" or so crumple structure to the back of the helmet. Again, work out the math and you can make the effect identical to the pillows.
J5V is on the right track: make it a click-on throw-away device. Easy peasy.

None of what you said is false, except for the "best team overall". They rely 100% on their D. Their O is 100% a "game manager". They have 1 trick they have perfected to 110%: the dink & dunk. They are not "explosive" in any way. They have 1 good REC: Johnson, and he's not even Schoen/Demski-level.
I think they lucked into so many wins this season. They often got teams when they were weaker. They didn't have to play the best teams 3 times like we did.
I think SSK gets smoked in the post-season, whether by Rourke or VAJ or whoever (even us). If they make the cup, and Alexander is healthy, him & Ento will rip them a new one.
But they did have great FA, did build maybe the best D, do have a strong aggressive HC, and have an OC that perfected what he was given. In that sense they outdid WFC in every regard. So yes, hat tip to them. We'll just have to see if that big D and oversized-wrestler RB can win the big one for them. Just like we bet it all on the "no pressure" D, they bet it all on their strengths.

No, the spot would only be auto-reviewed if command noticed something egregious. Even in a turnover situation they aren't going to strictly examine every little thing.
Thus why it took the challenge to get it looked at.
Quote from: Tecno on October 12, 2025, 02:56:09 AMAs for my suggestion, yes it would work because it is external padding that acts as crumple zones to slow the impact / spread it out.
There has to be plenty of smart people that have already gone down this road. I think player safety just has to get serious about it and insist on something more being done. Building crumple zones into vehicles and outfitting them with airbags has saved countless lives and numerous serious injuries. I'm sure we can spare many an athlete's brain from future harm by insisting something more be done. Maybe start a petition? Appeal to the commissioner?

Infractions should accumulate through the season, knock a QB out of a game once and you miss 2 games without pay, do it twice and your season is over.
