RB James Butler healthy scratch for Hamilton Tiger-Cats vs. Elks, Greg Bell to start
By 3Down Staff -August 16, 2024
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are making a switch at running back this week, replacing veteran James Butler with rookie Greg Bell.
Butler has recorded 92 carries for 440 yards and one touchdown over eight games this season along with 37 catches for 312 yards and one score. He missed only one game due to injury earlier this season on June 30 with Bell getting the start in a 24-22 loss to the Ottawa Redblacks.
Head coach Scott Milanovich indicated on Friday that Butler is "banged up," though he did not appear on the team's injury report this week.
Bell ran 13 times for 52 yards and caught seven passes for 40 yards in his lone start this season. The 26-year-old ran for 1,728 yards and 15 touchdowns over two seasons at San Diego State University following stints at the University of Nebraska and Arizona Western Community College.
Running back isn't the only position Hamilton is switching up as Taylor Powell will make his first start of the season ahead of Bo Levi Mitchell. Powell threw for 319 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions in a relief performance against the Montreal Alouettes last week, replacing Mitchell after he threw an early interception to Darnell Sankey.
The Tiger-Cats are starting to get healthy in the secondary, however, as James Peters and Stavros Katsantonis have returned to the starting lineup. Peters missed last week's loss due to a thigh injury, while Katsantonis has missed four straight with a leg issue.
Jordan Murray will start at left tackle in place of the injured Joel Figueroa with Quinton Barrow slotting in at right tackle. Star receiver Tim White will also handle the return duties as Davon 'Smoke' Harris has been moved to the six-game injured list with a foot injury.
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2-7) will host the Edmonton Elks (2-7) on Saturday, Aug. 17 with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. EDT.

McLeod Bethel-Thompson to start for Edmonton Elks vs. Hamilton as Tre Ford ruled out
By 3Down Staff -August 16, 2024
After being replaced by Canadian quarterback Tre Ford in Week 8, McLeod Bethel-Thompson is once again the starting quarterback of the Edmonton Elks.
The 36-year-old was relegated to the bench following an 0-7 start to the season and remained there until Ford suffered an injury to his ribs during last week's win over the B.C. Lions. Ford was placed on the one-game injured list on Friday and will not play when the Elks visit the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Saturday.
Bethel-Thompson has completed 69.5 percent of his passing this season for 1,959 yards, 10 touchdowns, and eight interceptions but has yet to win a start this year. With Ford unavailable, second-year passer Jarret Doege has been elevated off the practice squad to take on the third-string duties behind backup Dakota Prukop.
Running back Kevin Brown was a full participant in practice all week but will not play with the tandem of Javon Leake and Justin Rankin remaining intact. Leake and Rankin have been exceptional over the past two games, rushing for a combined 403 yards and four touchdowns in wins over Saskatchewan and B.C.
American defensive lineman Romeo McKnight (ankle) will miss a second straight game while Canadian defender Woodly Appolon is out of the lineup in favour of D.K. Bonhomme, who was a second-round pick in the 2024 CFL Draft.
The Edmonton Elks (2-7) will visit the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2-7) on Saturday, Aug. 17 with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. EDT.

Thanks for all the info! Major fantasy repercussions... excuse me while I make a few changes...
P.S. "James Butler healthy scratch" ... "Butler is banged up" LOL
Hey
@gobombersgo your stealing my thunder you eager beaver you! How dare you! :D
Just thought I'd take one less job off your busy hands.
Ford being gone makes a Ticat win easier. We desperately need the East to keep winning. Go Cats!!
If "bad MBT" shows up, it'll be over.
Powell looking way better than '23 Powell. He might end up being a Cody in 5 more years. Wouldn't it be great if he lights it up?!
Anyone know if TSN is gonna "golf" over half the game again? Any tips on best TSN channel to PVR? Just when I thought I couldn't hate golf-on-tv any more...
Weather warning: as of 5am the forecast is thunderstorms 60% at kickoff, taper to 40% for remainder of the game. Could be a lightning delay. Add extra time to your PVR and adjust your fantasy team accordingly!
(With luck the weatherguy will be wrong as usual.)
Quinton Barrow.... 6'6 331. 150 kg 196 cm. Right tackle ti cats.
Too big to play tackle? Should be interesting.
Well, if there was an ugly sister game, this would be it. Let's hope for the best. I like hammy chances with Trey ford out. Watch MBT throw a few pics lol
Who wins the turtle race of least sleepy colour man?
Ford or Glen?
Ford wins by a hair to me.
That looked terrible.
Jesus Murphy 18 got nailed
In an awkward manner. Yikes!
Knocked out I think. Caught him on the chin or side of the head
Terrible
Oh man this is gonna me one of those games now. Darn pity. Hope the guy is ok. Prayers.
Got the ambulance out there quickly which is good
Canadian guy from Edm. Plays in TiCats land.
These players are gonna need another warm up.
no way they can play with the same intensity the rest of this game
Edmonton should toss a deep one to Geno here
What would be cool is if Edmonton were to pass the ball back to Hamilton on first down when play resumes.
Well guys - have fun, off see the new deadpool movie. Maybe I can catch the end of the game
Enjoy!

Go see Alien Romulus it is much better the dead pool mess. And I am a comic book guy. Have fun though.
Best wishes, Luther. We're hoping for the best and that this is mostly precautionary and that you are going to have a full and complete recovery. Our prayers go out to you and your family.

I sure hope so. None of us want to see anyone hurt badly. Hoping for the best.
Just heard that Luther was moving all his extremities and that he is fully conscious so that's very encouraging.
@Ticats
Tiger-Cats receiver Luther Hakunavanhu suffered a head injury but was conscious as he left the field with full movement in his extremities.
He has been transported to hospital for further medical evaluation.
Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
#TheHammer
used to be a canuck #31 for elks very good utility back.
Hamilton is going to have no one left to play us next week
Well BLM got his wish, Powell is hurt , he's back in. Anderson really lays the wood at his linebacker soot
isnt that a penalty ?
really dirty
grabbed him around the neck and slammed his head into the ground
Ugh brutal throw by Powell on the EZ out. Peeeeuuu
Powell gets smashed as well? Elks hitting like a ton of bricks.
Dude needs to learn to slide.
Two pistols Mitchell up next.
It was a good clean hit.
Nice call on the offensive PI
Nice toss Mitchell.
Hamilton shoots itself in the foot again.Man they are bad
Hamilton can't even line up properly. Again offside.

I just started the game. Unlucky play, looked bad. I think you're right and he was knocked out standing and so for the 2nd hit coming in he was basically a rag doll. His neck would be limp and so any further action is just like spinning around a 20lb weight on the end of a string.
If they are right and he was moving his legs, that's the best sign he'll probably be ok eventually.
Prayers for Haku.
That makes HAM down to 0 backup receivers.

That's just not being mentally sharp. They are a bad team talent wise and mentally the weakest in the league.

Man o man TiCats screw up the lining up on a field goal. Holy mother...

Hamilton offside again, instead of Edmonton kicking a field goal, first and goal Edmonton, then touchdown....you don't have to ask why Hamilton loses so many football games, it's right there in front of you. They are literally their own worst enemy
This won't be barn burners like the last 2 nights. Peeeuuuu Hammy just not prepared.
Poor Hamilton just can't get out of their own way. You'd think a club with veterans like BLM would have them firing on all cylinders but nope. Makes me wonder if there is a coaching problem here and not a player problem.

At least they didn't get the fumble aspect wrong.
Bo makes some good throws but he also flubs more than a few too
It's looking to me early like EDM no longer believes they suck. Before they knew they would lose and they had no heart. I see their D playing with purpose and heart now. It'll make them way harder to beat.
Maybe if they lose a couple more they'll go back to zero morale.
Go CATS!
Hamilton CAN NOT tackle worth s***

Hammy is just a beaten club. Not many positives on that team.
Hamilton looks like they're a semi pro team tonight. Man, never seen a team get ragdolled as bad as Hamilton is getting tonight all year.
Hamilton is the new Edmonton

Rankin nice burst.
Every year Hamilton makes massive changes and every year they overpay and end up sucking
Ball takes forever to get to the ElK WR, where the heck is the secondary.
Hammy looks like they quit on that one.
BLM throws a terrible ball.
Box J Boys must be crying in there box? :D
That hit was fine
Keondra Smith has a big enough necklace? Hilarious
you can see Hamilton players backing off from contact, like Bell heading out of bounds rather than trying to move upfield, keondre smith backing up as well

I think losing Haku and Powell took away all of their morale and steam. They are plodding around like they are dead.
Wow. They just keep getting worse.
We're going to get their very best effort next week or they'll have given up.
I wonder if part of their morale issue is playing for a qb that doesnt want to be there after the way he was pulled last game after one play
Soon we will see the bags over the ham fans heads

That is insane. Completely unacceptable. I'm not sure I've ever seen anything like it. Falling for the hard count at the 3YL? What is wrong with those players. You aren't going to block a FG at the 3 as it's basically a straight-up kick!!
HAM better get their act together, or my pick is going to look real dumb.
Why is it all of a sudden EDM OL is looking like all-stars? MBT's problem is he needs protection. Today he's getting protection. And HAM is supposed to have one of the best DLs!
Aaaaaannnd Hamilton shoots the selves in the foot again, fumble a punt on their own 11 yard line, they are just brutal
And touchdown, 29-3...why does Hamilton lose so many football games?? Oh ya, they suck

Ya, twice to the same R and DB (so far). If the DB is clearly anticipating the deep route, why not set him up and fake the deep and then throw an "underthrow" dart that has the R come back to the ball while the DB keeps running the deep route?

I've never liked him and always thought he was a phoney. He was a major recipient of good fortune being Calgary's QB all those years when the Stamps were a great team. Even then, he won what? One cup? Brandon Banks would like to question that one cup win too.

You'd expect this if it was BC or SSK or MTL vs HAM. But this is quite disturbing given that both teams bottom of the basement.
And remember, the only reason people thought EDM was good now was because Ford finally got to start. Ya, so why is EDM still favored when Ford is hurt and once-hated MBT is starting?
And why can't HAM, who knew it was going to be MBT, get to the QB with their DL?
It's like HAM braintrust can't plan worth a hill of beans.

"Bo Levi Mitchell, a 29-year-old quarterback for the Calgary Stampeders, said this week that he worked out for the Vikings last offseason and impressed the Vikings enough that an unnamed team official asked him how he could help them win.
Mitchell, the reigning Most Outstanding Player in the CFL, answered by saying he's won championships at every level he's played and added: "I'm going to come in here and I'm going to take Kirk's (Cousins) job."

Per Mitchell, the Vikings staffer didn't like that. No, we don't want you to do that. We want you to come in here so we have a good quarterback room. Help teach him things, help be a supporter of him,

Did I hear correctly earlier around halftime that they took Powell to the hospital in a stretcher? That just nuts. Virtually unprecedented. He looked pissed off on the sidelines, chucking his helmet down.
HAM ambulance bill gonna be hella big tonight.
The Elks still have a lot to learn about playing soft, playing to the level of their opposition, and playing with a lead. BTW, MBT sucks.

Why isn't our FS ever in positions like that? That EDM FS was looking like Dequoy out there. I think a Dequoy-style roving FS is more useful than a run-stop Loffler type given the style of ball teams are playing this season.
At least until it gets cold out... then BA37 might prove more valuable.
So this game is what a game with two lousy QBs looks like. Not much for entertainment.
Bell is the fantasy vulture tonight. He was probably $2500 and probably up to 100Y and a TD with a Q left.
Everything going wrong tonight for HAM and now they have a dumb fire alarm going off. Are they gonna evacuate the crowd? No one will come back!!
In the end BLM might get good fantasy points because the whole 2nd half is garbage time! He didn't suddenly get good, HAM just started playing prevent.
Oh ya, I played T.White a few times in fantasy this season and each time he was a zero. So it's only NOW that White decides to wake up and show some effort and heart and get looks and YAC? Sigh.
that Mayala catch looked like a magic trick
Wow, I just checked and EDM is wasting 2 IMP spots on Leake/Rankin. It's hard to do that on a CFL roster. I think only CGY also does this?
From Riderfans poster Ike:
"Refs got Randy's memo don't piss off the new owner. I am pretty sure that is the way this league is going."
I was thinking that exact same thing. All the calls going EDM way. Strange, that.
Either EDM suddenly went from highly-penalized team to angels in 1 week, or...

It would be funny if HAM could get a TD soon with a 2-pt and we suddenly have a game!! Everyone will check the scores later and ask how HAM ended up winning!
Gawd, Mitchell sucks.

Oh Pete's still here! Good!
That's a sad play for HAM where the FS is in just the right place with deep help and Mayala pulls off the best catch of his mediocre career.
So much for my comeback theory.
And Rankin steals my Leake fantasy night once again GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

LOL! I don't see it happening with BLM at QB.
Movie was fun - good fight scenes, fun soundtrack. Plot wasn't very deep that is for sure.
Alien looks too scary for me - I have watched all of the previous ones though.
Seems like this game is over. We really can't take Hamilton lightly next week at home though.
So what happened to HAM's much-vaunted DL?! Last season they had signed like every good DL player in the league, including our Sayles. They always dressed 8 DL... or more.
So why is their DL getting shredded up the gut and shredded off the edge all night long? They can't stop anyone!
Letting Rankin just trot in through the A-gap is embarrassing.
4Q7:27 should be DPI as the sneak-out RB/TE should not be able to be held, even if he's at the LoS. Oh well.

yeah its hard to believe that Hamilton trounced Elks in their first game. Its the CfL the team that comes out with the most physicality usually wins

Powell starts: take them seriously.
BLM starts: free bingo spot.
I'm more concerned with EDM: hopefully someone reminds them how much they suck before we play them.

No such thing as a free space in the CFL and sports.
That was a catch for Bridges

I d never put BLM in in fact I'd 6 game him if Powell can play next game. Move on from this guy, he's terrible
EDM getting this win is bad news for us. Makes the @BC game kind of a must-win.
We cannot go back to being worst in the W. At least we know we won't be worst in the league again! HAM will keep that title.

Exactly. I don't know why he's on their roster
HAM was bad, but they got creamed early with turnovers. And that after watching their guy get hauled away by an ambulance.
No resiliency. No answer for a still very weak EDM team without their wunderkind.
The whole thing was cursed. Kind of like the '94 San Marino F1 Grand Prix.
I really hope we get BLM, or Powell, next week. I don't want to face a noob Frost. Noob QBs in their first starts often wreak havoc because there is no film on them yet.

Yup. When I was there for GC the fans I spoke to were so dejected that BLM was their #1 guy. No one had any faith at all. They tried to put a good face on, but you could tell they were depressed about the entire situation.

You mean the Aryton Senna one?....that was a horrible crash. Seen a few documentaries on that and on YouTube. He had no chance as a car malfunction at the most improper time. Much like Gilles Villeneuve from Canada in the 80's with Ferrari that got wiped out.

Yup... good memory! What many don't remember is another driver died the previous day (practice or quali?), and Rubens had a huge airborne crash into the same wall that killed Senna. 2 deaths and a near-death in one weekend. Cursed.
Rubens in an interview said he remembers nothing from the crash, except for the moment he went airborne, when he said "oops!".
I still have that race on VHS somewhere. When Speed channel re-aired it in the early-00's.

Any word on if Haku has something that might be long term / lifelong? Hoping/praying not. I guess we may find out when the week's first practice/injury reports come out.
I don't think he's there yet, but I could see him becoming a Woli-level NAT WR.

I hope he has a full recovery but wouldn't be surprised if he misses some games. Head/neck injuries need to have caution applied.

If a player suffered a serious concussion it can take a long time to fully recover and they should be out for weeks, not miraculously recover in time to play the next week. IMO the CFL is still downplaying the seriousness of the issue, as they have since the days they used smelling salts as a cure to grogginess.

That was simply a horrible conclusion to one of the nastiest and most violent head blows I have ever seen a player endure. I am so grateful that young man wasn't more seriously injured.
