Truth is, most leagues worldwide have an import quota of some sort.

Aside from NFL, NHL, MLB & NBA there aren't many without restrictions. Most soccer leagues including MLS have a limit.

I remember watching Nielson play. He was a flanker I believe, a term you never seem to hear anymore.

Yes, that's him. Even better he did in a WDF against Calgary in 1965. He was a dentist though.  You must be another old timer.

I wasn't considering that a worldwide question but sure.

Quote from: Blueforlife on October 07, 2026, 06:43:37 PMNah it's a fair rebuttal to an anti Cdn content fan, you are understating the value of Cdn content but that's fine, some share you view, many don't.

Johnny A. is depth Cdn.  The notion about buying a ticket to see him is a stretch to try to win an argument with no merit.  People buy tickets to see all the great Canadians play.  It's a key part of the league even if you value it or not.  You can't compare US football and Cdn, it's a completely different situation.  Casual fans don't know roster players, they know stars.  Hard core fans know and value the Cdn content on each team and it's critical to the success of each club.

I feel any fan of this league should at least respect and ideally support the great CDN talent we have.   If you don't like Cdn content in ball, there are options to the south for you.  This league will always feature Canadians.  Understating the value of a Cdn OL.  Yes we enjoy them road grading for Brady. But yes I understand the point, most go to watch the skilled positions.  The guys in the trenches win you games on both sides.

Look me a bit to understand your last point, now I do.  Yes results may vary LOL.  You should get someone to do a poll for you at the game LOL.  How many can you name LOL

The Canadian game is home grown, small and community based.  American ball is based on big venues, hype and big biz, fueled by a massive population.  I have lots of friends that only support American ball and they forget the great options we have at home.  The bright shinny object gets the attention.  Yeah they got better athletes but we got a lot going for us too.

WAIT, this is a Brady thread LOL

It's interesting that you think you can call me an anti Canadian fan. I'm not anti Canadian. I'm anti handing any player a roster spot determined by his nationality and setting a ratio to accomplish that. The same goes for global players.

I've continually challenged why some imports are on the roster by a type of default.

You can't seem to see that difference which I have made clear for years.

And I maintain that abolishing the ratio would make GMs' jobs too easy. Right now the GMs do like triple the work NFL GMs do, dealing with the ratio and Canada draft, etc.

Half of building a gc team is taking years to get some top Nats on your team. Gone are the days you can just start 7 Hurls and win anything.

Of course, you can argue simplifying would improve the league... But I like that GMs have to have a bit more brains and juggling ability.

I also like how this makes it nearly impossible for a new regime to take a zero team to the gc in one year. Two, yes, one no. I've always liked teams that make monotonic progress, like they bided their time and earned it. That's why I won't be too upset when edm wins the cup this year.

Yeah, a bit I guess. I do remember him from his latter couple of years only, so there you go, not that old.😉His nickname "Doc" is mostly what clued me in to the answer. I never knew about the 109 yd thing though. That did make me hesitant because I don't remember him being particularly speedy. Just luck on the 1965 guess though. I think I'll pick up a lottery ticket today. Thanks for the question.

I don't see the NFL GM's having it any easier. Their are winning teams and losing teams. Bad draft choices are made and some exceed expectations. GM's and coaches are being fired all the time.

Re: The Ratio:

1. 2 types, Canadian, Non-Canadian
2. Min 10 Canadian's per team
3. Min 5 starters

= Better football, shorter careers, equally hard GM job
Plan for the worst. Hope for the best.

I wasn't talking about you. I know where you stand.  Sorry if I made it out like I was taking about you...

I know you position and it's nice that you have summarized it.

I think item 2 and 3 would not get passed but the league tries every new CBA. Item 1 would eliminate the global spot per se. That in itself would create potential problems. I'd modify the ratio to add 2 more DI's that would allow for import or global kickers counted as imports.

You'd have to expand more of your thoughts regarding items 2 & 3. Having a minimum number of Canadians is one issue but what does that mean regarding imports as part of the roster?

As I suggested I could see adding 2 more DI's by just calling globals as part of the import part of the roster. If a team actually has 1 or both kickers that are Canadians, then that team just has 2 more DI's in rotation.

I'm not opposed to reducing the number of Canadian starters but I'm also ok if it stays the same. If the number of Canadians overall is reduced then that screws up the development on the depth chart.

So it's complicated.

hard stop no to less Cdn starters, hard stop no to less Cdns total

It's the CFL, don't take away (C) or make it a little c

Canadian players make the league what it is.  It's special, it's unique, it's local and it's all about the community. The league has a lot of work to do but this is one thing I would never change

I feel a discussion about Canadian players, ratio etc. should be in another thread, this is a Brady thread.

Blue In BC

I'd like to see an increase in revenue result in an increase in roster size. 4 more players. In my world 2 more DI's and 2 more Canadians. That would be over and above adding 2 DI's to replace the global designation and changing a global player to the same as any other import.

Number of starters stays the same. I might suggest reducing the number on the PR if 4 more players are added to the AR. We wouldn't need 2 spots on the PR designated for global choices as a result.
