Quote from: Sway on October 04, 2026, 09:43:39 PMYup. Thats why im worried about Elgersma experiment as the heir apparent.

Funny, I was thinking about just that overnight. If elgs is the 2028 plan then we may be no better off. He seems even less mobile than Zach.

However, he is a beast of a man and can probably take hits all day. He may even be able to stay upright with a guy on his back and make a play downfield like Rourke does. This will be a boon compared to "concussed by a pinkie" Zach.

I still think the answer will come from elsewhere. The CFL needs new, younger, and better qbs. Hopefully we'll find one. We were somewhat close with Strev and dru. It is possible.

You gotta get over that Elgersma isn't mobile. He's infinity more allusive than Collaros. He's obviously more of a pocket passer but he ran for over 600 yards for the Golden Hawks.

He's a 24 year old athlete. That's mobile enough.

We all saw him running and escaping in the 2 games he was thrust into.

He's a plodder. He makes Cody look like usain bolt.

Yes, that's still better than Zach in terms of sacks. No, it isn't ideal.

To be fair, prime time Casey Printers would look like a bum behind this Oline.

So our DBs are "right there"... ya, they were, they often are.  But is that useful?

What I want to know is why on nearly every play, for both teams' O's, the DBs are "right there"... but the MTL DBs knock down every pass, and on the flipside the MTL RECs make every catch?

You'd think we'd win at least one of those battles: that things would even out a bit.  So all our RECs suck AND all our DBs suck?  And ALL the MTL RECs are goats and ALL of their DBs are goats?  This shouldn't be possible.

Why is it so easy for them, and impossible for us?

When's the last time one of our DBs made a good breakup?  How about 2 good breakups in one game?  When's the last time one of our RECs caught a ball with a DB on their back?  Pokey's immaculate catch in 2025??

I just wonder how this can actually be possible.  How can MTL's worst DB be better than our best.  How can MTL's worst REC be better than our best?  The SMS limitations should even this out.  Or are we really that bad at selecting talent?

A.  They aren't burdened by Younger and Condell.
B.  They aren't coached to hip check receivers forward, they tackle
C.  They have a world class QB and an Oline to protect him
D.  I suspect they have veteran leadership.  We haven't for a few seasons now.

Oh ya, and the TE sneak-out free TD early in the game is inexcusable.  All season long we've been yelling that no one ever covers the sneak-out TE or FB, or even RB.  If you're playing WPG you can bet that no one will see or cover any guy who appears to be pass-blocking.  And you can also bet we'll have no one in the flat.  It's guaranteed.

How is it possible that after a full year Younger can't get the players to watch for the lost player sneaking out for the wide open TD??  Other teams sniff out the real play, like the draw screen, etc, but we're sitting around like we've lose our sense of smell to covid or something -- we never sniff out anything.

It's like a finger over the line in SY... to me it's inexcusable.  It should be a fireable offense.

Speaking of Rourke, Sask. is patiently waiting for his brother Kurtis to give up on his NFL dreams, chances are he's a better bet than Elgersma based on bloodline and superior training picked up at big time schools in Ohio and Indiana.

Where's the post-game pressers from mos and dru? They aren't in the videos Sticky thread.

Nothing on the bb.com site either.  I really hate it when they hide the post-games because someone was ornery.  Win or lose, they should be held to the same standard.

We shouldn't feel too bad, and MTL/Alexander shouldn't feel too cocky.  MTL beat us with our questionable recent-addition backup in.  We beat MTL with Alexander in and them at full strength.  That makes our win more meaningful, and their win kind of dumb.  How would the game have gone if MTL had Crum or Caleb Evans starting the game??

You can blame the D all you want, but when the O puts them on the field for 90% of the game because they only got 6 first downs (and almost none in the 2nd H until garbage time), you are usually going to lose.

Simple answer, awful coaching.  Time for a 180 overhaul.

The thing I don't understand about JY is his systems just fundamentally don't work. His drop 9 package is garbage and not even based on defensive football best practices. His more aggressive posture that we've been calling the last few weeks at least looks like professional football and it's giving the players a chance to make plays but it's still not working.

Worse, I also just don't see an ability to adjust at all. It either works from the get go or it's an unmitigated disaster. And I have no idea how he approaches the job mentally but there's no evidence that he schemes anything away. Competent coordinators do this all the time. Philpot destroying us? Double him. Shift coverage. Anything. Instead it's 200 yards of damage and Vaval is STILL one on one with him on the outside in the fourth quarter? Amateur hour. Should be fired for that alone. Third string BC quarterback and all he can do is run, what do we do? Let him run. That's be biggest red flag. I'm okay with getting beat on defense by good quarterback play but after the 15th Philpot catch, maybe sell out on Philpot? High school coaches do better.

re dbs -i can see a few reasons;
1. Youngers defense is a reactionary one, seldom do dbs anticipate a play we have the lowest interceptions in the league , edm leads with 23...we have 7. We are always in a chase position.
2. Size & physicallity, Texada, Nichols, Vaval are amongst the smallest dbs in the league,
No receiver has any fear of getting hit. The amount of attempted arm tackles is unacceptable.
(especially at the safety position..kelly and Kramdl rarely punish anyone)
3. Talent. (as you theorized) Our dbs have zero hands. even if they have a chance it bounce off and hits the dirt. Stripping balls from receivers is a skill which maybe Williams and Holms have, but is overall lacking,  50/50 balls has turned more into 80/20 in favor of the opposing team. When they have a receiver with good size or even not, when its one on one the opposing qb doesn't hesitate to throw as the chances of an interception are slim.

Whats also disturbing is every year we bring in like 50 new dbs, who is scouting them? Is it talent or Youngers system? And the guy we sign as a free agent (Moxey) is 5 ft 10 and plays soft.

The safety needs to be a physical downhill type of player. Im frankly surprised we haven't utilized Jaylen Smith in this role other than O'Shea being so enamored with the lb position.

He looked sloooooooow when we saw him play. I don't think he can run in this league unless it's one of those plays that happens once or twice a year when a guy like Bo sees wide open field and he can slowly get up to his top speed.

But I don't think it's necessary to be "mobile" in the way that techno is talking about. As long as he can shift in the pocket to buy time and get the ball out quick.

If Elgersma had success as a runner in Usports it must be based on his size and strength over speed and agility. Maybe once he gets going he has a longstride like Taylor Cornelius in Edmonton, that guy had no problem outrunning short legged DB's once he got up to speed.
