Quote from: Blue In BC on Today at 01:36:17 AMI've mentioned the bell curve and how it's gotten worse the last 5 seasons. 15, 14, 11, 10 and probably less than 10 this year.

The 1st few years were not good. So I'm hard pressed to call this a good legacy. Two great years followed by a downhill spiral.

I think it's somewhere in the middle.  If "amazing" is defined by the Bud Grant era (I wasn't around, but I have heard enough that it was the golden years and we do have a bronze statue of him) then no, this falls short.

But we did end a pretty brutal streak of no Grey Cups, and then followed it up with another right after.  And if Covid didn't happen, it may have been 3. And if not for a play or two here or there, maybe 4.

It's been a great run.  My hope is that the mafia can realize it is time to move forward and realize it has been a downward trend for the past 4-5 seasons, and regroup.

If we don't win any more games, we'll tie EDM's 7-11 record from last year.  Remember, EDM: the team that was the TSN talking point for finding ways to lose games that year.

That's us now.

Brox & Ceresna said they came here because they wanted to be on winning teams.  It's going to be hard to convince high-caliber players to come here now.  No more fair deals: we'll have to overpay them like struggling teams do.
Never go full Johnston!

Well, I think this is ridiculous. Our successful run of seasons were more than just the 2 when we won the cup. There's always going to be the asterisk/what ifs behind losing 3 straight cups, but it doesn't remove all of the good things that happened those years.

We've had three full seasons of pretty drastic year over year regression.

I like O'Shea but that criticism is fair and especially so because O'Shea's biggest blind spot seems to be evaluating new talent and ideas and their value compared to what he knows.

All criticism is fair and I'm holding up my torch and pitchfork, but trying to say the only success we experienced lasted 2 years is nuts. 2016-2023 was a great time. Then the offence took a nosedive.

I didn't exactly say that. You could include the 3 years we lost the Grey Cup. So we had 5 years overall in O'Shea's tenure. His tenure is 10 years plus, hence the bell curve analysis.

However you also can't deny the downward trend that started in each of those losses and the current path.  The " run " is not over per se. How will we do in the next 2 years?

MOS joined the team in 2013. What did we win 2013 - 2018 (  6 seasons )? Even arguing 5 good seasons 2019-2024 is 5 seasons then followed by 2 of bad seasons.  I think my bell curve comment is fair if you look at the  entire " run ".

I have no idea how long the re-build will take. At the moment we can't even determine who our starting QB will be in 2027. It's not like we have a hot new up and coming individual like Alexander.

Do we look like a team with many things sorted out including QB development?

As we have declined, some have understated our run of brilliance partially blinded by our more recent failures.

I'm with Jesse.

The run we had will go down as one of better runs in club history imo.

Time to change the transmission, gears are slipped and fluid is black.  We got 300,000 miles out of her, good run.  Like Neil says, I won't retire but I might retread.

To me, our success was less due to O'Shea and his culture (although that definitely played a role, including attracting players to sign here), and more to sheer talent. In his first few years, the team struggled. It was only once we had a top 3 QB in Zach replacing the mid-tier Matt Nichols that we were able to get over the hump, aided by an unreal injection of other talented players in the few years leading up to 2019, including Bighill, Jefferson, Jeffcoat, Alexander, Rose, Sayles, Harris, Demski, Lawler, Bryant, Hardrick, Desjarlais and Grant. Compare our Grey Cup rosters to our current one. All the culture in the world won't make a bad team into a good one. Kyle Walters needs to start doing his job again, or be fired.

Except they overpaid Ceresna to be here this year.  Oft injured (missed most of last season) and invisible for large periods of time yet they still paid him too much.  Another bad signing by Walters.

The Elks relied on big FA signings a few years ago in desperation to change directions but more and more Hervey is relying on players they have recruited at the low end of the salary spectrum.  Whoever is recruiting for the Elks should be a person of interest the Bombers pursue with the league's biggest pocket book and maybe it's time to move on from Danny Mac. The Elks have worked  hard to resurrect a sinking ship, the Bombers need to act before they sink deeper, missing the playoffs should be their last wake up call.
