4Q7:44 It used to be that if you stiff-armed a DB before the ball arrived, and you fully extended your arm so your elbow locked, then that was called OPI.  But this season it's not being flagged.  They let the REC get away with basically anything, especially if they stiff-arm them a bit earlier in the route.

I don't like it, as it's cheatin' teams like SSK that are taking advantage of all of these paper-only, unenforced, rules.

How was there no PI on the last play of the game where you clearly see Coxie's jersey grabbed and pulled before he caught it?

Quote from: Tecno on August 30, 2026, 07:38:22 AMDoes the CFL need a de facto "full weight on the sack" rule?  That sack by 2 SSK guys putting their full weight on Kelly seems like a poster child for us getting the NFL rule.  Brutal hit.  They could have done something other than grab & pancake with about 450 lbs of combined weight.

The full weight rule could help Zach too.

I thought they did call that on Montreal vs us and the next night they didn't.

Not just because of a well timed pancake though.

Maybe you're thinking of the piling on by neuf? That's a totally different thing than the special NFL rule that just protects qbs. Neuf was just being late and stupid and way too obvious about it.

Talking about Awe.  Luke Wilson says you can't land on the QB. This is the play.

Yes, Luke is wrong. He watches way too much NFL. He pretends to be a CFL guy, but he is not. He's made many mistakes this season because he doesn't know our rules, especially recent changes from the last few years.

Full weight itself has never been flagged in CFL. It has to be late, or head, or something else added in. And the play in question proves it.

All true, but part of the roughing the passer rule also includes language that roughly says, "whatever the refs deems too rough". So like everything else it's wildly inconsistent.

Article 5 — Roughing The Passer
Because the act of passing puts the passer in a particularly vulnerable position to injury, special rules against roughing the passer apply. Once the ball is released, defensive players must avoid all unnecessary contact with the passer. A player shall be penalized for any act of Unnecessary Roughness to the passer, including but not limited to:

Delivering a late blow to the passer after the ball is released,
Contacting the passer in an unnecessary manner, including stuffing him to the ground, violently throwing him to the ground, and landing on him with most of the defender's weight,

I stand corrected.  That will teach me to post from my phone where I can't check all of my years of rule-book copies.

So then how could this example in the TOR@SSK game go unflagged?  Not only was one guy landing with ALL his weight (not just "most"), but a 2nd guy was too.  And the refs and EITS just say "meh"?

Not that I'm surprised, as I think I said before, I've never seen the CFL ever flag a RTP for just the weight aspect.  It always has to be mixed with something else (head hit, late).

So this "most of the weight" thing is about as much use as a rule as the "tandem block" rule that happens nearly every game now: exists on paper but semi-officially has been memo'd "ignore this rule".  So in that sense, I was originally correct: it is de facto not a rule.

Now I'm upset that the league is ignoring yet another rule on the books.  Either call it as written, or remove the rule from the book!
