Quote from: Sir Blue and Gold on Today at 02:48:13 AMElgersma gives us the possibility of someone coming in and giving us more than that. Worst case scenario he's no more effective than Streveler or any of the other terrible backups. Best case, he learns quick and takes over the job. You only get that chance if you've got a guy like him and not like Jake Maier or whatever.

So you think Elgersma is, right now, the likely #2?  You're probably in the minority.  I was there with you, but I'm coming around to Perkins.  Why?  Because he has lots of pro experience.  Elgersma has none.

Pro experience might trump 3-down experience.

They might be so close (in suckage), though, that we do a musical QBs thing where one gets 2 games, then we go to the other.  Like 2013.

I agree that if there's one guy you want to get all the reps for the future, it's Elgersma.
Never go full Johnston!

I think our QB room is much improved. Obviously players don't exist in a vacuum, so I believe even our one year older version of Zach is going to play better this year due to upgrades to our OL and Receiver core.

Strev was a shell of himself last year and Perkins is going to give us a better version of a mobile guy - whatever his role ends up being.

Elgersma is a better prospect for the future that the organization already believes in more than they have with any newbie that I can remember. Most QBs coming in have to learn by osmosis, but this guy is being actively developed. I think it will pay dividends.
My wife is amazing!

These new AMerican players must be shaking their heads at WPG weather.
Cold & snow one day in camp, then +35 a week later. At least the mornings should be fine for practice.

If it goes to plan and these two can learn from one of the top QBs we have seen in a long time here, we will be just fine.  Bumps along the way.  Slow roast these guys and they will season well.  I expect an excellent year from Zach.

This is how I think it wil go.

1. OL will struggle at times but gel a 1/4 to 1/2 way
2. Run game will cook by fall big time but be pretty consistent
3. Receivers will build on relationship with Zach slowly
4. New OC will be good but make mistakes and adjust reasonably well

If the only change on the OL is Broxton at RT there shouldn't be any issue in gelling or struggling.

We can't have a slow start. The west will be very competitive.

If the interior is Wallace, ELi and Neufeld then the only new guy will be Broxton (a super expensive FA signing). Any struggles will almost certainly not be "gel" related but talent-related.

Is Elgersma better than Streveler was at the beginning of last year? No. Will he become better with time? We all hope so, but unless that actually happens, the QB room is weaker.
Plan for the worst. Hope for the best.

If we needed a win Strevler would more likely get us that win somehow. He was great at motivating the offence and adding a wrinkle to the rushing game.

Elgersma isn't going to get us a win this year. He might help us get one, but that's not his job. We need to set our expectations for his 2026 season. Our expectation should be: Get comfortable and improve on your accuracy.

Perkins should be the guy to replace Zach if he's out. He's our "win-now" back up QB.
With that said, I really want to see Perkins play a full half of football this Friday. We need him to be ready to come in at any time and win us a football game!

Dunno. I think in practice they'd platoon them. And circumstance changes the scenario a lot. If Collaros is just out a game for some reason Perkins may be a reasonable choice. If for some reason Zach's off to the 6 game them I'd more likely prefer Elgersma. Early and late in the season would factor in also.

My preference for young QBs is to play them, though.

Totally agree.
Don't go through life looking in the rearview mirror.
