its nuts when this early in the season, Chad Kelly, Dro.Brown,Nathan Rourke, Trevor Harris, Alexander have all missed
games with injuries. That's over 50% of the league
Safety protocols for qbs are not really working. To me they need 2 categories of rtp  15 yds for incidental and 25 for others with ejection for 2.

Kelly was injured last year when he broke his leg and it had nothing to do with a RTP issue. Alexander pulled a hamstring running and was not hit by an opponent. Rouke's injury seemed to happen with a mechanics issue throwing the ball.

I don't entirely disagree with your suggestion but disagree on the current injuries to QB's. It's not quite as black and white and would require further analysis.

Late hits and low hits are serious but often a timing issue and / or involve being blocked into a QB.

It's worth the league taking a new look although I expect they often do that but we don't always hear that happening.

I think we already see too many lame RTP penalties, and don't get me started on PI...

RTP is an essential penalty.  It has not caused as many injuries as other football plays, but if it stops one career ender, its more than worth the issue.

Plus, potential RTP gives QB's much more time and space to make plays, which is what we want from them, for the good of the game.  If any DL could just barrel down and smack a QB silly, things would be a lot different.  Because they have to judge their approach to the QB more precisely to avoid low or high hits, QB's have a little more time and wiggle room.

Are there borderline RTP calls?  Sure, but I'd rather that happens than no calls that lead to D's getting more careless.

And, again, penalty assisted drives end up in points, which is good, right?
Unabashed positron.  Blue koolaid in my fridge.  I wear my blue sunglasses at night.  Homer, d'oh.

Oshea brings up point in that teams roster 7-9 dlinemen regularly and only 6 olinemen.By 4th qtr the oline can be more tired and protection suffers
Whatever the reason after 3+4 games its a lot of qbs hurt and it definitely impact the games from a performance and entertainment value.
Its not the marginal calls, or amount of calls but when a dlineman does cross the line and delivers an illegal blow the penalty should be more severe
Right now if you simply brush against a qbs head its the same as punishing blow.
The precedent is the distinction between accidental and actual pass interference However in this case
The penalty for accidental should remain at 15 yds while regular rtp would be 25 yds with egregious adding an ejection

Football is an insane sport, the only thing preventing a vicious D-lineman or LB from ending a QB's season immediately and improving the odds his own team advances further in the playoffs is the threat of a 25 yd. penalty plus an additional fine. If he follows through on his worst intention he has the possibility of earning aprox. $25k extra for himself and all his team-mates in additional playoff bonus payments.

I hope no Rider players ever read these pages!

That's why the retaliation hit against T.Harris that put him out with concussion should be dealt with mega-harshly.  It should be a suspension.  Probably 2-3 games.  And if you get 2 of those you should get kicked out of the league like Marino.

The fact Trevor will probably miss multiple games shows that the league wimped out by just fining the offender.  If that was Zach, I'd be very angry.

I think the approach should be to look at each actual QB injury in isolation.  And for each one, ask "can we do anything to mitigate this?".  And then actually do something.

I don't really care as much about "running QBs" getting injured 20Y downfield, as that's their own choice/risk, and they already have head protection.  But the pocket should be a "safe zone" in terms of strictness of protection.  We need to try to force all hits into being "form tackles".  We've done a decent job so far.

Ya, but this happens basically every 1-2 seasons.  Wasn't '23 the year every single QB missed games?

Zach also missed the first, but for other reasons.

However, I think we're luckier this season that nearly every #2 is an experienced vet(ish).  A couple of seasons ago every backup was a (near-)rookie!  Masoli et al may suck, but they suck less than 90% of the rookies that show up to the CFL.  That's the one nice thing to having a strange surplus of oldster QBs that have decided not to retire yet.

Some years are like this.  Nothing new.  Our rules are working for the most part but at times we will see our star players get hurt.  It's really hard on the league and it sucks but it's just part of the game.  I wish we could fix it but it's almost impossible as football is violent and unpredictable.  After the starters went down at least the backups been healthy I believe.  Yes techno it's nice having the 1A/Bish guys that can come in, even if they are old, little washed up or just career backups.  Overall I am currently pleased with the depth of QB in the CFL.  A few names that got cut this year that could come back if the injury trend continues.
