Quote from: Throw Long Bannatyne on December 19, 2024, 04:10:33 PMBetts re-signs with BC, it'd be interesting to know what they paid him.

Reports on Lionbackers state he'll earn $260K in 2025 with some additional playing benefits possible. YIKES. He has extra value as a Canadian but he's now the highest paid defensive player in the CFL.

Per Farhan Lalji
Betts deal will make him the highest paid defensive player in @CFL. 260k hard money in 2025 and 270k in 2026. @CFLonTSN

Also from Farhan
Hearing that Mike Benevides has agreed to become the defensive coordinator of @BCLions. The same role he held from 2008-2011.
Wouldn't surprise me to see Ryan Phillips retained on staff, but not confirmed yet.

Don't believe it's financially sustainable yet, but $250k would be a good rate of pay for (non-QB) star players in the CFL to achieve across the board. It could be very attractive to many players down South who are gifted but can't crack the NFL nut.

Seriously overpaid.  This and gambling on Rourke makes me wonder who is actually calling the shots in BC.

B.C. Lions hiring Mike Benevides as defensive coordinator.

"The Lions' incumbent defensive coordinator, Ryan Phillips, is the only member of the team's 2024 staff who remains under contract for next season and his firing would count against the football operations cap. According to Lalji, the former defensive back could still return next season in a different role, though that has yet to be hammered out."

If he's still under contract, I guess he goes back to DB coach under Bene...  no doubt Buck wanted someone with more experience to help him, and Bene has the DC/HC chops to do it.

I agree, that is a lot of money for Jalen. A healthy Tyson might be worth that much.

The Stampeders have been busy - all two year deals

Canadian receiver Jalen Philpot has signed a two-year contract with the Calgary Stampeders and will remain a member of the Red and White through the 2026 season. Philpot had been slated to become a free agent in February.

The Calgary Stampeders and American offensive lineman D'Antne Demery have come to terms on a two-year contract that runs through the 2026 Canadian Football League season. Demery had been slated to become a free agent in February.

Veteran long snapper Aaron Crawford has signed a two-year contract to remain with the Calgary Stampeders. The Medicine Hat product had been slated to become a free agent in February.

If he's healthy, why not?  He's got nothing but upside, and is already pretty darned good. He's no Nic Demski, but he had a decent year on a bad team with bad QB play.

If they'd let him get to FA, MTL would offer him that, or more.

I agree, ly only 659 yds and previous years couldn't stay healthy. Maybe they thought that they were signing his brother. (although he can't stay healthy either but at least when he is ,Tyson has produced. You can say he has potential but that seems a lot given his history, but Stamps can dream.

Exactly. He may have upside but you can find rookie imports for ELC deals that will be more effective.
