48-Hour Primer  Blue Bombers Training Camp Report Day 12
May 22, 2025  Ed Tait

FYI: The Blue Bombers will release their first preseason depth chart on Friday in advance of Saturday's tilt. Head coach Mike O'Shea said teams can dress as many players as they like for home preseason games with likely only the injured players not in the lineup.

Not practising over the last few days have been Canadian DBs Josh Hagerty and Ethan Ball, receivers Gavin Cobb and Nic Demski while Stanley Bryant was in attendance and uniform, but not in gear.

Blue Bombers sign QB Zach Collaros to a one-year extension
May 23, 2025

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has signed quarterback Zach Collaros to a one-year contract extension through the 2026 Canadian Football League season.

Collaros is entering his sixth season with the Blue Bombers and has firmly established himself as one of the greatest pivots in franchise history.

A two-time Grey Cup champion with the club in 2019 and 2021, he has helped guide the team to five straight championship game appearances while twice being named the CFL's Most Outstanding Player (2021, 2022) and CFL All-Star (2021, 2022). No other quarterback in league history has started more than three consecutive Grey Cup games.

Since his arrival from Toronto at the trade deadline in October of 2019, the Blue Bombers are 57-18, including playoffs, in games in which he has started.

His 49 regular season wins ranks third in franchise history behind only Ken Ploen (82) and Dieter Brock (71) and his 16,177 passing yards is fifth in Blue Bombers history.

Collaros threw for a career-best 4,336 yards in 17 games in 2024 with 17 touchdowns against 15 interceptions as the team was 10-7 in his 17 starts. He had four 300 yards-plus passing performances last year, including a season-high 432 yards in a win over Edmonton in September. He also threw for six touchdowns in that game, tied for second most in franchise history with Sean Salisbury (Sept. 10, 1989, vs. B.C.) and Jack Jacobs (Oct. 4, 1952, vs. Calgary) behind Jim Van Pelt's record seven touchdown game against Saskatchewan on August 29, 1959.

Collaros has now suited up for 158 career CFL games with Toronto (2012-13), Hamilton (2014-17), Saskatchewan (2018-19) and Winnipeg (2019-). His 32,935 career passing yards ranks 17th in CFL history and his next passing TD will be the 200th of his career.

Need to Know  Training Camp Day 16
May 26, 2025   Ed Tait

LAWSON RETURNS:
Encouraging news from sick bay with veteran Canadian defensive tackle Cam Lawson back at practice for the first time since suffering a season-ending knee injury in last year's preseason.

Lawson, who seemed poised for a bust-out campaign after posting five sacks in a rotation with Jake Thomas in 2023, participated in the first chunk of Monday's practice before spending the rest playing the spectator.

RECEIVER BATTLE:
Monday's practice opened with Nic Demski, Dalton Schoen and Kevens Clercius joined in the receiving corps by Keric Wheatfall and Reggie White, Jr. working with Zach Collaros & Co.

FYI:
Not practising on Monday were RB Brady Oliveira, DBs Cam Allen and Ethan Ball and WR David Wallis, along with DB Jake Kelly... O'Shea praised all four QBs who saw action on Saturday immediately after the game. Asked again about rookie Chase Artopoeus, who was 5 of 6 for 43 yards and rushed once for 10 yards after entering the game with just over three minutes remaining, he said: "He's done a great job taking in information and then showing poise on the field. When you put a young guy who is new to the CFL in the position to run a drive where the play clock — our CFL-specific play clock really matters — and he executes it extremely well, it's just nice to see. You don't often get that in a training camp or first preseason game setting. But it was good by the receivers, too. There was a lot of very positive IQ footage to show from that last drive from a lot of young guys — Chase being one of them. I thought he did a great job."

DT Cam Lawson is dressed and practicing today. Trying to see if there's a corresponding move to bringing him off the veteran injured list.

The corresponding move was the Bombers moving WR Kody Case to the suspended list.
Case didn't play Saturday and sat out the latter part of last Thursday's practice.

Blue Bombers make roster moves
June 1, 2025   Ed Tait

There's a feeling of both finality and opportunity to Canadian Football League cut-down day, with doors unfortunately closing for many and swinging wide open for those that survive.

It's also a bit of a moving target, with the roster hardly carved in stone as teams begin final preparations for the start of the 2025 season this week — and a week after for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The Blue Bombers made official Sunday morning their roster moves after Friday's final preseason win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders, releasing 24 players and moving 11 to the practice roster.

The cuts news:

-First off, the only real mild surprise of those who were released outright was Mitchell, who shone in rookie camp and then carried that into the first couple of weeks of main camp. But as the sessions wore on, the very deep receiver class stepped up and, apparently, passed him on the depth chart.

Also among the releases were two CFL Draft picks in Gassama, (sixth round, 2024) and Leroux (fourth round, 2024) and one global pick in James Evans (second round, 2025).

Worth noting:

-Four players from the 2025 CFL Draft class are on the active roster as of now in linebackers Connor Shay (Rd 1, 6th overall), Jaylen Smith (Rd 2, 15th overall) and Lane Novak (Rd 5, 45th overall) and receiver Joey Corcoran (Rd 5, 39th overall) while OL Ethan Vibert (Rd 3, 27th overall) and DB Ethan Ball (54th overall) are on the practice roster.

The three other picks from '25 include second-round pick QB Taylor Elgersma, who signed with the Green Bay Packers, DL Trey Laing, who reported for rookie camp and then left to attend to personal matters and OL Iwinosa Uwubanmwen, who is recovering from an injury and is heading back to the University of Alberta.

Among the new faces who earned jobs based on their camp performances:

-Free agent veteran receivers Jerreth Sterns and Dillon Mitchell both open on the active roster. Sterns was steady throughout camp while Mitchell struggled to find consistency but has a proven track record in the league. White, Jr. is on the practice roster.

-Veteran defensive end James Vaughters has been impressive after his years in Calgary and figures to offer some pressure opposite Willie Jefferson.

-Linebacker Jonathan Jones, ex of Toronto, joins a talented list of linebackers and can play both the middle and weak side spots.

-CB/KR Trey Vaval: versatile defender who is in the discussion to be the opening week kick returner with Peyton Logan currently injured.

-RB Matthew Peterson: Canadian tailback acquired from Hamilton before the Global draft and offers depth behind Brady Oliveira.

-DT Collin Kornelson: Manitoba Bisons product drafted in the fifth round (44th overall) in the 2023 CFL Draft.

-QB Chase Artopoeus: looked promising in the first preseason game before getting dinged Friday and having his reps limited. With Zach Collaros serving his one-game suspension for the opener, Chris Streveler, Terry Wilson and Artopoeus would be the three QBs dressed.

New faces who begin on the practice roster:

-Cooley: the rookie RB nicknamed 'The Shuttlebus' by teammates, put together a solid preseason and led the team in rushing in both games, totalling 13 carries for 92 yards.

-Cobb: another Manitoba Bisons product who was drafted by Edmonton and appeared in 29 games over 2023-24.

-Allen: Solid first preseason game with an interception and, after not practising last week, suited up for the second contest and had a pass knockdown. He'll continue to push Jamal Parker, Jr. for the safety job.

-Woodbey: all over the stats sheets in two preseason games and offers versatility.

-Elsbury: big dude at 6-5, 315; came to the club after attending Seattle's rookie minicamp and playing his college ball at Iowa.

-Munier-Bailey: the team's first pick in the 2025 Global Draft. Was dinged early in camp, started to flash his skills in second preseason game.

Expect more clarity on the roster and potential depth chart after the club returns to practice later in their Week 1 bye and then leading up to the season opener against the B.C. Lions on June 12th at Princess Auto Stadium.

Based on today's cuts, here is what Winnipeg's depth chart (unofficially) looks like, including injured players.

Logan, Lofton, Makonzo, Hagerty, and Kelly will likely start the year on IR, while Collaros is moved to the suspended list.
