Blue Bombers Training Camp Report  Day 4
May 14, 2025   ED Tait

DEEP CUTS THE KNIFE: The Blue Bombers released seven players to get down to 75 (not including draft picks) and that listed included defensive backs Patrick Rogers and Marcus Hillman, defensive end Ryan Johnson, offensive lineman Austin Euler, kicker Andrew Mevis, receiver Scotty Brown and veteran QB Shea Patterson.

The release of Patterson drew some raised eyebrows from outside the building. Signed in the offseason following his release from the Roughriders, he was seen as a potential No. 2 when brought aboard.

But a healthy Chris Streveler and the improvement in Terry Wilson — rookie Chase Artopoeus is also still here — was part of the decision to part ways.

"We had a full (quarterback) room. It was tough to spread out all the reps," said O'Shea. "But with Strev flying around out there and Terry coming back and looking like he's improved it's how you get keep everybody in reps until the first preseason game — it just wasn't going to work."

FYI: RB/KR Peyton Logan left practice Wednesday morning and returned near the end in street clothes and with a noticeable limp. No update yet on his status... Also not practising on Wednesday was RT Eric Lofton and Global DE Kemari Munier-Bailey.

Blue Bombers Training Camp Report  Day 6
May 16, 2025   Ed Tait

FYI: Not practising on Friday were OL Eric Lofton, RB/KR Peyton Logan and receiver Kody Case, while DB Jamal Parker, Jr. and LB Lane Novak were both back. O'Shea said after the session there is no timetable on when receiver Dalton Schoen or defensive tackle Cam Lawson — both coming off knee injuries — will begin practising... Gabe Wallace and Tui Eli continue to share work at the guard spot left vacant by the departure of Liam Dobson, with Kendall Randolph and Micah Vanterpool getting looks at Lofton's right tackle spot... Among the receivers who continue to impress are second-year man Myron Mitchell and newcomer Keilahn Harris while DB Cam Allen, taking a ton of work at safety, continues to make play after play.

Blue Bombers Training Camp Report  Day 7
May 17, 2025   Ed Tait

FYI: Notes from Saturday and Day 7 of Blue Bombers training camp...

-Not practising were OL Eric Lofton, DBs Jamal Parker, Jr. and Josh Hagerty, DT Jake Thomas, WR Dalton Schoen and DT Cameron Lawson. Returning to work were WR Kody Case and DE Kemari Munier-Bailey.

-WR/KR Peyton Logan has been moved to the one-game injured list, meaning he would miss the season opener.

-Gabe Wallace and Tui Eli continue to share reps at guard, with Kendall Randolph at Lofton's right tackle spot. Tanner Schmekel saw an increased workload at DT with Thomas and Lawson sidelined.

-The receivers continuing to get the most work with Collaros and Canadian starters Nic Demski and Kevens Clercius have been Myron Mitchell, as outlined above, along with Sterns, White, Jr, and Keric Wheatfall.

Asked for his assessment of Dillon Mitchell, O'Shea offered this:

"(He's) learning a new system. Tall guy, moves around well. For any of those new guys who are coming into our building from a different program, there is a different way of doing things. There's a lot they have to learn — a new playbook, all those things. All the guys we signed are starting to move around and look different and starting to figure out how they fit."

COMINGS/GOINGS: The Blue Bombers added three and released two on Saturday. Coming aboard are DE Phillip Webb (6-5, 265, Jackson State) and two OL in Tyler Elsbury (6-5, 312, Iowa) and Brayden Keim (6-8, 322, BYU) while two OL were released in Chris Walker and Matt Kickel.

-Webb was recently in minicamp with the Miami Dolphins and spent the last two years at Jackson State, suiting up for 25 games and registering 35 defensive tackles, 16 tackles for losses, six sacks, two passes defended and a fumble recovery. Before coming to the JSU he played in three games at LSU in 2021.

-Elsbury recently attended minicamp with the Seattle Seahawks after playing in 50 games, six of them starts, during his days with the Hawkeyes.

-Keim, who made 19 starts at BYU and was an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention last season, comes to the club after being invited to minicamps with both the Kansas City Chiefs and Chicago Bears.

O'Shea on the scouting and coaching staff working in concert to make sure they see as many prospects as they can during a camp:

"(The scouting staff has) a list of guys they're always talking to or who they like who are on our neg list (their CFL rights owned by the Blue Bombers). Guys become available at different times and so it may seem like it's not great to bring a guy in after six days of camp or they miss rookie camp and don't have that foundation. But depending on the position and the guy they can pick it up very quickly and the coaches understand they've got to have a certain structure in place where a new guy can learn and quickly take the field and not be totally out of place.

"That department's job is to look to make us better always."

Blue Bombers Training Camp Report Day 9
May 19, 2025   Ed Tait

WELCOME BACK, SCHOEN:
The big news Monday was the return of Dalton Schoen to the practice field. One of the CFL's most-dominant players in 2022-23, the veteran receiver missed all but 2 1/2 games last year after suffering a season-ending knee injury.

And he looked superb in his first day back.

Per the CFL transaction wire the Bombers have released 7th-round draft pick Trey Laing. They added him to the roster on May 2 but Laing hadn't arrived at camp yet.

They've signed Canadian WR Nico Kwemo (Queen's)

Derek Taylor   @DTonOB   May 21
If I'm not mistaken the Bombers could have put Laing on the Suspended List and held onto his rights (28 such moves in the CFL since May 11).

Releasing him feels like Laing has chosen to move on from football. Hopefully he is doing well.

Derek Taylor   @DTonOB   May 21
Mike O'Shea said today that Laing was at rookie camp then was excused to take care of a personal issue.
Bombers don't expect him back.

He reported for rookie minicamp was on the field for one practice and then left for personal reasons. Not practising on Wednesday were receivers Gavin Cobb, David Wallis, Jerreth Sterns, DB Josh Hagerty and Ethan Ball while DT Cam Lawson and DB Jake Kelly are still recuperating from surgeries...
