I forgot to mention at the time:

The punt-single to win the game is exactly what we debated at great length 2 years ago when Leggs missed a 40(?)-something FG, causing us to lose the game (at home?).

Many people said it couldn't be done and you should always try to kick the FG.  Some thought you should just hoof it through the EZ, or at least into the EZ with enough time to run down and keep the player there.

We now have the definitive answer: it is possible, and it can be smart.  I hope we add it to our repertoire.

I see RB Kevin Brown has been left exposed on the Elks PR list, which means he'll be a F.A. in the off-season.  If Ottawa was wise they'd snap him up for their upcoming game with the Argos as they've had a weak running attack since they cut Armstead.

Cutting Armstead likely cost them any real chance at the cup.  Assuming he didn't destroy all the cohesion.  Maybe Dyce felt protecting his job, which requires a strong appearance of leadership, was worth more than the cup?

Yes, OTT has no run game.  Laborn was benched and they started and used Addison as RB?  Ya, ok, but he's like a zillion feet tall and thin: not RB material.  I don't see how they don't start Laborn in the ESF... or pick up a stray guy like you suggest.

However, a few days to learn the whole book and blocking schemes is probably impossible.  Ya, he could probably learn "run straight forward" well enough, but forget pass-pro.

That punt single again:

What can give you more length-from-scrimmage and less chance-of-screwing-up in this situation:
1. have your punter hoof it like a punt (as in this game)
2. have your KO kicker take a FG snap/hold on the tee but just hoof it like a KO (i.e. accuracy not terribly important)

??

Keep in mind the punter is a few yards farther back than a K's tee.  Also a factor, a punt may go higher and thus be harder to catch when it lands near-outside the back of the EZ, vs a KO kick that would have a lower trajectory.  You still need to clear that REC that's waiting at the back of the EZ.

I'm wondering if you can optimize this trick even more by trying #2 instead of #1.  If you do do a KO-style kick, you do have to make sure you don't hit the uprights... so you'd probably want to aim wide on purpose, because if you get it between them you win by a FG anyhow and defeat the purpose of this trick.
