Riders lose REC Shawn Bane Jr., RB Ryquell Armstead for Elks game
By 3Down Staff -October 4, 2024

The Saskatchewan Roughriders will be short a couple of key offensive weapons when they take on the Edmonton Elks on Saturday.

Receiver Shawn Bane Jr. has been ruled out after suffering a significant knee injury on a low hit from Ottawa's Money Hunter last week, though the Riders have not officially ruled him out for the season. The 29-year-old receiver has had a down year after breaking out in 2023 with his first thousand-yard season but has still caught 49 passes for 581 yards and five touchdowns.

Also absent will be new running back Ryquell Armstead, who suffered a shoulder injury while trying to deliver a block on the aforementioned Hunter. Despite switching teams halfway through the season, the 27-year-old sits fourth in CFL rushing with 160 carries for 862 yards and three touchdowns. The Millville, N.J. native is just two weeks removed from the CFL's first 200-yard rushing game since 2021.

Both players have been placed on the one-game injured list as CFL rules prevent additions to the six-game after a team's 15th contest. Jerreth Sterns, who posted 25 catches for 324 yards through the first half of the season, will start in place of Bane. Frankie Hickson will get the nod at running back after going for 392 yards and a touchdown on 76 carries in seven previous appearances.

Defensively, the Riders are expected to receive a boost with the returns of strong-side linebacker C.J. Reavis and defensive end Bryan Cox Jr., who each missed last week's victory. Veteran special teamer Jordan Herdman-Reed will also dress, while Canadian linebacker Zach Philion and American defensive end Eric Black have been returned to the practice roster.

Boundary cornerback Deontai Williams will serve his one-game suspension for an illegal and dangerous tackle on Redblacks' receiver Kalil Pimpleton last week, with Amari Henderson slotting in as his replacement. American right guard Jacob Brammer (knee) will be replaced by Nick Jones.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders (7-7-1) will visit the Edmonton Elks (5-10) on Saturday, October 5 at 7:00 p.m. EDT.

Elks missing top pass rusher Noah Curtis for non-football-related reasons
By 3Down Staff -October 4, 2024

The Saskatchewan Roughriders won't have to worry about the Edmonton Elks' top pass rusher when they make the trip to Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday.

Defensive lineman Noah Curtis will not play in Week 15 due to an undisclosed non-football-related matter that caused him to miss all three practices. The second-year Canadian, who was drafted by the Elks in the fourth round of the 2023 CFL Draft, has had a breakout campaign to this point, notching 21 tackles and six sacks in 15 games.

Former first-round draft pick Daniel Joseph will get the start for ratio reasons, though veteran American defensive end AC Leonard is expected to see the bulk of the playing time. Boundary halfback Darius Bratton will return to the secondary after a one-week absence and send rookie Jalen Green back to the practice roster, with Canadian linebacker Olivier Muembi dressing for additional depth.

Running back and returner Javon Leake will also be back in action after recovering from a thigh injury but will back up rookie Justin Rankin. The CFL's reigning Most Outstanding Special Team Player has blossomed into a rushing threat since taking on an increased offensive role, carrying 80 times for 506 yards and five touchdowns while adding 26 receptions for 191 more yards through the air.

Veteran running back Kevin Brown will be a healthy scratch as a result of the move. In 12 games this season, the former thousand-yard rusher has carried 101 times for 522 yards while adding 22 receptions for 138 more.

The Edmonton Elks (5-10) will host the Saskatchewan Roughriders (7-7-1) on Saturday, October 5 at 7:00 p.m. EDT.

Riders will lose to the Elks as Riders have to many injuries.  Elks by 10.

TecnoGenius

You guys got it!  EDM needs to do us a solid here.  Besides, they don't want to win yet another one, especially not at home when they're trying to boost ST sales for 2025...

bluebeard is right: Depth chart changes show SSK getting weaker and EDM getting stronger.  The only "better" change for SSK is Reavis coming back in.

Almost looks like Riders are resting starters... but alas, they are injuries.

Poor Cryders, EDM might just win this one.
Unabashed positron.  Blue koolaid in my fridge.  I wear my blue sunglasses at night.  Homer, d'oh.

Go Elks. Riders are without a bunch of injured starters and Elks are getting slightly healthier.
Take no prisoners

If elks win, we will then clinch first, and go 5 weeks without a meaningful game until Western Final Nov 9. Is that a problem? Rest versus rust?

We are an old team that is hurt.  Rest is key.  Rust already came off once, we undercoated the stars with fluid film.  Preventive maintenance will allow us to be well oiled into the off season.  ;D

MBT to start for the Elks. I wonder how long it will take for the Riders to deliver a head shot or go after one of his knees.   :-\

I think unlike prior years, O'Shea will play his starters a fair amount (if fully healthy) the last two games even IF first place is clinched. Two Grey Cup losses in a row....need to alter the formula a little. Keep the guys at least warm into the playoffs. Rookies certainly need no time off unless quite injured.

Even that last game vs Montreal might want to send a message we are coming for you if we meet in the Grey Cup again! :) Could be a game where BOTH teams are in cruise control as could be a meaningless game outside of bragging rights.

Fak the Riders.  Would love to see an extremely hard hitting game today and an Elk 20pt victory.

If SSK wins this, then we'll have nearly the same number of garbage-season games as MTL (just 1 less).

I'd watch what MTL is doing.  What's the point of playing your starters the whole game if you're just going to lose anyhow because you're not going all-out?

Do it like the PS and Zach/Brady?kenny/Demski start 1-2 Q's then leave the game.

I'm a big REST over RUST guy at this point in the season.  We've always done a bunch of rest when in this situation before.  I don't see why MOS would change.
