Explosive rookie receiver Kalil Pimpleton returns for Redblacks
By 3Down Staff -September 27, 2024

The Ottawa Redblacks will look profoundly different when they face Saskatchewan on Saturday, with six new starters from last week.

On the offensive side of the ball, electrifying rookie Kalil Pimpleton returns after suffering a hand injury seven weeks ago. The 24-year-old had only appeared in four games prior to going on the six-game injured list but caught 18 passes for 315 yards and a touchdown, also running for a punt return major.

Fellow rookie receiver Andre Miller will head back to the practice roster, while returner Eli Stove (knee) has been placed on the six-game injured list. Defensive back Tobia Harris returns from a knee injury to handle the majority of those duties, with Pimpleton expected to contribute situationally.

Up front, right tackle Zack Pelehos will make an early return from an ankle injury and step back into the starting lineup. His replacement, veteran Canadian Jacob Ruby, will move to the blind side, as left tackle Drake Centers (shoulder) has been placed on the six-game injured list. The all-Canadian offensive line will be charged with protecting veteran QB Jeremiah Masoli, who will make the start as Dru Brown battles an ankle injury.

Defensively, the team has lost their top two safeties Alonzo Addae (knee) and Ty Cranston (back) to the six-game injured list, as well as starting cornerback Brandin Dandridge (knee). Veteran Money Hunter will make his first appearance since suffering a shoulder injury in Week 3, starting at safety, while C.J. Coldon will make his first start at boundary corner. Canadian rookies Dawson Pierre and Yani Gouadfel will dress for insurance, while American linebacker Andrew Chatfield gets demoted to the practice roster.

The Ottawa Redblacks (8-5-1) will visit the Saskatchewan Roughriders (6-7-1) on Saturday, September 28 at 3:00 p.m. EDT.

Returns of DE Anthony Lanier II, DB Rolan Milligan Jr. boost Riders' defence
By 3Down Staff -September 27, 2024

The Saskatchewan Roughriders will be a lot stronger on the defensive side of the ball this week, led by the much-anticipated return of defensive lineman Anthony Lanier II.

The 31-year-old native of Savannah, Ga. has missed the last seven games while recovering from a knee injury. He dressed for seven games to start the season, making nine defensive tackles, two sacks, and one forced fumble.

The six-foot-six, 285-pound defender has made 60 tackles, 16 sacks, and three forced fumbles over 39 career CFL games, all with Saskatchewan. He will start at defensive end this week over Global Habakkuk Baldonado, while American Eric Black gets knocked to the practice roster.

Also back in the lineup after a personal absence is halfback Rolan Milligan Jr., who welcomed a baby girl last week. In 13 games this season, the 30-year-old has established himself as a legitimate M.O.P. candidate, collecting 62 defensive tackles, 18 special teams tackles, and six interceptions.

Milligan Jr. will slot back in at boundary half while his replacement, Amari Henderson, bumps over to the field side. Talented strong-side linebacker C.J. Reavis (knee) has been placed on the six-game injured list, forcing DaMarcus Fields to come into the box as a result. Backup linebacker Jordan Herdman-Reed (leg) is also out long-term and will be replaced by Zachary Philion for depth.

On the offensive side of the ball, Canadian receiver Ajou Ajou (knee) has been placed on the six-game. Fellow rookie Dhel Duncan-Busby will make his first career start, while veteran National pass catcher Colton Hunchak will dress for the first time as a Rider. American Jacob Brammer (knee) is still listed as a game-time decision but is expected to start at right guard, moving Nick Jones back to the practice roster.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders (6-7-1) will host the Ottawa Redblacks (8-5-1) on Saturday, August 28 at 3:00 p.m. EDT.

Throw Long Bannatyne

I guess this is one of the CTV games, showing on TSN+ but they've labelled the broadcast as "CFL Data Enhanced Feed: Tiger-Cats vs. Lions".  Too bad nobody at TSN cares whether it's right or wrong.

GOLDMEMBER

This stupid CTV broadcasted game had me miss the first half. CFL does dumb things sometimes.

RBs need to wake up!

Doesn't look like Brown is in any danger of losing his position to Masoli. I would put Crum in.

What happened to using the dynamic Pimpelton more?

What a putrid dirt-bag team those Riders are. When is the league going to reel them in?
Go Bombers!

Suitor is a piece of crap too. Instead of admonishing his team's dirty play he says "I guess we'll have another Gofundme when the league looks at what Williams did". Imagine picking up a player and slamming him head-first into the turf at the end of a game that is already over. Fortunately it looks like Pimpleton will be okay but that could have ended very badly. What is it about the Riders that causes them to want to intentionally injure other players?

If the league doesn't reel this team in another team will retaliate and take matters into their own hands and then it will really get ugly and it'll be the league's fault. I thought Rhymes was going to go postal there. Good for him for standing up for his team mate.
Go Bombers!

They don't play the right way. Being the goon squad will only come back to bite them in the long run. They're going to get into close games down the stretch and get zero benefit of any doubts. Plus, that's not the kind of culture players gravitate towards if they have choice. In the end it will be their undoing and their fans will be incensed that "everyone is against them".

At the end of the day, avoidable penalties are selfish and selfish teams almost always come up short.

Quote from: Pigskin on September 28, 2024, 10:44:02 PMWow, lots of empty seats.

Ya, I don't get it.  Completely gorgeous day, warm enough the toddlers are in swimsuits!  They won last week.  They are basically 2nd in the West.  And the province stays home?

Though I do think that early afternoon games are a tougher sell than evening games.  I know I hate them in comparison!

But shame on them when their neighbor WPG is nearly selling out every game.  We'll probably sell out the mid-Oct game, which normally would be unheard of.

So much for the "league's best fans".  :o

It was Dru who had chemistry with Pimpleton.  Masoli struggling with lots of rust isn't helping.  But I'd give Masoli some time to improve... this really is his first real start this season, right?  Zach took 4 starts (plus!) to open this season before he stopped sucking.

I just watched the Williams/Pimpleton hit... was trying to get through all the games before focusing on the non-outcome-changing things.

That a crazy hit I'm not sure I've ever seen before.  You often get suplexes and similar, but I'm not sure I've seen a piledriver.  Williams could have just let go, but instead he drives his head into the turf?  Blatantly dirty this time.  There is no arguing that was a dirty intent to injure.  And the game was over, what was he thinking?

What Rhymes does in comparison was nothing.  He actually seemed very restrained.  I'm not sure he did more than push at a helmet and chirp.  I don't see Rhymes getting a fine unless they want to make an example of out him for general incitement/escalation.

I could see Williams getting a suspension for this one.  This one needs more of a message than just a max-fine.  The only saving grace may be Pimpleton got up and looked ok -- the severity of the outcome appears to affect the severity of the punishment.  However, it's Williams' first bad infraction I think.

I think it all adds up to a 1-game suspension.

Haha, the headline is all about the Riders boosting ratings then the actual numbers show the WPG game had 50% more viewers!  LOL.

Anything to make the CTV fiasco look like a win.

Yeah I was confused as well

Jesse

I wonder if they have access to the data to know what the percentage of new viewers is (ie. people who do not have TSN and are new viewers watching on CTV). Or if this is just people who have both channels, would normally watch on TSN but now can only watch via CTV. Which is just losing the TSN viewing audience for...reasons...
My wife is amazing!

Typical of media these days to have a headline that says X, then the body of the article (usually a few paragraphs down) says Y, and X/Y are mutually exclusive.
