Receivers Kaion Julien-Grant, Tyler Snead return to Alouettes' lineup
By 3Down Staff -September 13, 2024

Despite the devastating news that Tyson Philpot will miss the remainder of the 2024 season, the Montreal Alouettes are getting a big boost to their receiving corps this week.

Canadian Kaion Julien-Grant and American Tyler Snead will both return to the starting lineup on Saturday after long injury absences. Their presence will knock Jose Barbon and Shedler Fervius down to the practice roster.

Julien-Grant played in six games for the team this season prior to suffering a shoulder injury, catching 26 passes for 288 yards and a touchdown. In five seasons with Montreal, he has amassed 155 receptions for 1,458 yards and four majors.

Snead played in just one game this season, collecting two receptions for 62 yards in the opener before suffering a foot injury. The five-foot-seven, 174-pound speedster had 56 catches for 788 yards and five touchdowns as a rookie in 2023. He added nine receptions for 132 yards and one touchdown through three playoff games and delivered a critical block in the Grey Cup game which helped spring William Stanback for a score.

Absent from the team this week will be all-star safety Marc-Antoine Dequoy (head), who has been placed on the one-game injured list. In 11 games this year, the team's francophone leader has collected 22 defensive tackles, intercepted two passes, and forced one fumble.

Rookie Arthur Hamlin, a third-round draft pick and recent cancer survivor, will make his first career start at safety. Veteran Nafees Lyon will also return to the lineup to start at boundary cornerback, as Dionte Ruffin moves to field halfback, Bryce Cosby takes back over at strong-side linebacker, and Titus Wall remains in a depth role.

Former NFL cornerback Cre'Von LeBlanc has been placed back on the six-game injured list, while rookie Canadian defensive lineman Philippe Lemieux-Cardinal will make his first career appearance.

The Montreal Alouettes (10-2) will visit the Calgary Stampeders (4-8) on Saturday, September 14 at 7:00 p.m. EDT.

Stampeders to start Jake Maier after benching, scratch Logan Bonner in favour of Matthew Shiltz
By 3Down Staff -September 13, 2024

A week after throwing five interceptions in his first career start, Logan Bonner will be a healthy scratch for the Calgary Stampeders on Saturday.

Veteran quarterback Jake Maier will take back the starting role after he was benched last week for throwing four interceptions in the Labour Day Classic, a performance head coach Dave Dickenson called "not good enough." Through 11 games in 2024, the 27-year-old has completed 71.4 percent of his passes for 2,921 yards with 15 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Taking over as backup is Matthew Shiltz, who was acquired this offseason and held the clipboard for the first five games of 2024 before suffering an ankle injury in practice. The 31-year-old has completed 65.4 percent of his passes for 4,357 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions over 78 career games as a member of the Montreal Alouettes and Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He has also carried the ball 101 times for 625 yards and four touchdowns.

Maier will get some improved protection up front, as starting left tackle D'Antne Demery returns to the lineup, bumping Eric Smith to the practice roster. Left guard Bryce Bell could also be back in the fold, though he remains a game-time decision with a calf injury.

Defensively, veteran cornerback Tre Roberson will be back in action on the field side. Canadian Nick Statz will start at safety with American Bentlee Sanders (hamstring) on the one-game injured list and fellow Canadian Malcolm Thompson (hamstring) on the six-game.

American linebackers Darius Williams and Jacob Roberts, as well as Canadian defensive tackle Justin Sambu, will suit up in the game. American defensive tackle Josiah Coatney (knee) and Canadian defensive end Elliott Graham (ankle) will be on the one-game injured list, while American DB Meiko Dotson has been demoted to the practice squad.

The Calgary Stampeders (4-8) will host the Montreal Alouettes (10-2) on Saturday, September 14 at 7:00 p.m. EDT.

I live in Calgary - have and have always had season tickets to the stamps as I just wanted to support the team. And I have to be frank. I made it to one game this year and doubt I will make anymore. And as for this line up - Who Are These Guys??? I only recognized a couple of players. I am not sure what the season ticket count is for this year but has to be down over last years numbers and unless things change - 2025 will not be any better. Sad Times in Cowtown.

I dunno. Maybe, but I don't think the Als have been playing the best ball of late.
Go Bombers!

Stretch

Montreal winning helps the Bombers, Calgary winning helps deflate the Als. How about a tie - that would sort of be like both teams losing.
Money is no object...especially when you have none.

Pigskin

I would like to see Calgary get back on track for there two games again the Riders.
Don't go through life looking in the rearview mirror.

The rest of this season is probably Jake Maier's  last chance to show he is a starting qb  with the stamps or in the CFL.

so many opportunities for him, cant see it continuing without serious improvement on his part.

Ya.  I think Maier would actually be a great Jennings/Franklin/Arbuckle perennial #2 guy.  And I don't think he has too big a head to accept that role.

He can come in an keep you in the game, or win you .500 if he's surrounded by a great team.  Exactly what you need in an affordable #2.
Never go full Rider!

Wow, no Dequoy.  Only 1-gamed though, so I guess MTL thinks they have this game totally in the bag and don't even have to dress their best.  He's probably just taking a break.  KJG back will make up for points-against with points-for.

I wonder how much of Maier's problem is his supporting cast. Other than that beast of a receiver, Begelton, what has he got to air it out to? I also believe letting Carey go was a mistake. I always though Carey was a pretty good back. I also wonder about Dickenson and his coaches. Is it possible that BLM made Dickey look good and now that he's gone Dickey doesn't look so great.
Go Bombers!
