Calgary Stampeders bench QB Jake Maier, name Logan Bonner starter vs. Elks
By Justin Dunk -September 6, 2024

The Calgary Stampeders are making a quarterback change, benching veteran Jake Maier and naming Logan Bonner the starter.

The six-foot, 219-pound Maier completed 22-of-34 pass attempts (64.7 percent) for 297 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions during Calgary's second loss in the Labour Day Classic since 2012. Head coach Dave Dickenson called the result "embarassing" for his team, while stating Maier was "not good enough."

Through 11 games in 2024, the 27-year-old has completed 71.4 percent of his passes for 2,921 yards with 15 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He joined the Stamps in 2021, replacing Bo Levi Mitchell as the team's undisputed starter mid-way through his second season.

Maier's in the final year of his contract and ranks seventh among CFL quarterbacks in hard money compensation for the current season. He's thrown for 10,765 yards with 53 touchdowns and 36 interceptions during 52 career CFL games.

Bonner entered the last week's game late in the fourth quarter, completing 4-of-6 passes for 33 yards. The 26-year-old spent last year on the Stampeders' practice roster and dressed in a depth role all season. The six-foot, 234-pound Bonner makes his first career CFL start in Edmonton.

Prior to arriving in the CFL, the Rowlett, Tex. native threw for 4,381 yards with 42 touchdowns and 20 interceptions in 18 games at Utah State Uiversity. He began his collegiate career at Arkansas State University.

In other roster moves for the Stampeders, running back Dedrick Mills returns to the lineup after serving his team suspension and will knock Kylin Hill to the practice roster. Offensive lineman Bryce Bell (calf) is back in the starting lineup but is listed as a game-time decision, as is receiver Ishmael Hyman (hamstring). Veteran cornerback Tre Roberson (quad) will not be available this week and will be replaced as a starter by Tyler Richardson.

Defensive back Kalyn St-Cyr (elbow) and defensive lineman Kelon Thomas (knee) have been placed on the six-game injured list, while linebacker Darius Williams is a healthy scratch. Defensive back Meiko Dotson and defensive lineman Elliott Graham will dress in depth roles.

Calgary (4-7) visits the Elks (4-8) at Commonwealth Stadium for the second half of the annual Labour Day home-and-home on Saturday, Sept. 7 with kickoff at 7:00 p.m. EDT. The Stampeders are 0-5 on the road this season.

Elks put kicker Boris Bede back in the lineup for rematch with Stamps
By 3Down Staff -September 6, 2024

The Edmonton Elks have changed their mind when it comes to their kicking situation, as the inconsistent Boris Bede will be back in the lineup for Saturday's rematch with the Calgary Stampeders.

The Elks paid a significant sum to bring in the 34-year-old East Division all-star on a two-year contract this offseason, but he was named a healthy scratch in the Labour Day Classic after missing a critical kick in a tight Week 12 loss to the Montreal Alouettes. Through 11 games, Bede has connected on just 18-of-25 field goal attempts and his 72 percent conversion rate is the worst in the CFL, as well as the lowest in his career since 2016.

37-year-old Global kicker Dean Faithfull will return to the practice roster after handling the duties last week, going one-for-two with a make of 41 yards and a miss from 29 yards out. The former British soccer player was the Elks' primary placekicker as a rookie last year, connecting on 22-of-28 attempts for a conversion rate of just 78.6 percent.

Also absent from the lineup this week will be rookie American defensive end Noah Taylor (shoulder), who has been placed on the six-game injured list. Through seven games, the UNC product has 12 defensive tackles and two sacks. Global linebacker Les Maruo will fill the vacant spot in the lineup.

The Edmonton Elks (4-8) will host the Calgary Stampeders (4-7) on Saturday, September 7 at 7:00 p.m. EDT.

I think it's better for us if the Stamps win this against the Elks but I'm not sure. I wonder if Ford starts or MBT? Roster spots are on the line. So is the season for both teams.

I think the Stamps move on from Maier and go after VA in the off season, at least they should. Bonner is not ready for prime time, not even close.

Yikes, Calgary looking awful. Officially took over worst team in the league. Bonner is nowhere near ready to start, Maier is struggling and their D isn't strong enough to hold the fort.

The Zipp

Is that Nick Lewis on the Calgary sidelines ?

Either the elks have a great offence or Calgary stinks...or a bit of both

MBT took heat on here earlier in the season by some.  He is playing well.

I don't remember that, tbh.

He was leading the league in passing most of the year. No one thought the offence was the problem. It was Chris Jones and the defence.

Some were critical of him on here.

How does Calgary line up 13 for a kickoff?? They can't count!, that's high school football stuff, and Mark killam is this illustrious special teams guru?? They're a joke right now, a bad one

dd

This loss is totally on dickenson. Bonner has done zip all game, yet he stuck with him. He should have put Maier in to try and change the pace of this pathetic performance.

Pete

shame to see a franchise whose coaches have been hall of fame qbs, have such poor talent at that position. This team isnt even competitive at this point

dd

I just don't see what dickenson sees in bonner. He threw 5 and controversially 6 interceptions, yet, you in your wisdom stay with that guy. Calgary deserves everything they're getting right now. Love it

Ya, b4l is right on this one, half this forum wanted EDM to start Ford instead of MBT while EDM was losing.  We can go back and prove it!  To toot my own horn, I said stick with MBT!  (toot toot!)  I don't think Ford will be GC-winning material for several years, if ever.  Give him enough games and good Ds will figure him out and destroy him.  (He would/does make a great #2 though!)

MBT is basically the epitome of a traditional CFL pocket passer, like most of the recent greats (Zach, BLM, Ray).  He's unafraid to gun it (ya, gets some INTs), and a bit crazy so he'll stay in the pocket and take hits to deliver the ball.  He's not perfect, but he's proven he can get you to, and win a cup.

Dickenson The Greater is showing that he's done with Maier.  No way he was going to pull Bonner for Maier.  Maybe pull Bonner and put in Stevens, but not Maier.  Maier will now be an injury-only QB until he's released.

You need to let your new kid get live snaps and work through it.  You can't admit you were "wrong" and put your can't-win guy back in.  Why get your known-can't-win going-out-the-door live snaps?  Buys you nothing.

If they think Bonner can't do it then they need to go QB shopping immediately.  If they can't (money, time) then you roll with Bonner or whoever you have in-house come hades or high water.

They really are up the creek without a paddle.

P.S. Bonner seemed to have a cannon in PS, but underthrew so many balls tonight: does he not know how wide the field is?

I think the Elks coaching staff is nuts to mess with the success MBT has finally brought them after so many losses, they'll make a quick reversal if Ford loses to the Bombers again.  Have to watch out for their running game, currently building a 3-headed monster that could be hard to contain.

I'm curious why you mention Zach as an example of a traditional CFL pocket passer.  I know he will stand and take the hit, but he isn't like Ray in his late years standing and throwing, not yet anyway.  I've always seen Zach as someone that breaks loose and throws on the fly, sometimes in mid-air, often not planted at all, and making precision passes in the process on the move.

Am I way off on that?

Zach reminds me more of Tommy Clements than Ricky Ray. Man, the Bombers were awesome back in the TC era!!

They were awesome back in the TC era.  But they are more awesome now if you are comparing TC to ZC, to be honest.

And I agree - Zach doesn't resemble later Ricky, more comparable to Tommy.  Maybe even the great Matt D!

Quote from: Big Daddy on September 10, 2024, 01:21:42 AMI'm curious why you mention Zach as an example of a traditional CFL pocket passer.  I know he will stand and take the hit

Ya, I guess Zach can't be seen as a pure pocket passer, but he is more of a Ray/BLM than a Ford/VAJ.

So I guess we need to make a spectrum of "pocketiness".  So I'll adjust my POV to Zach being much closer in pocketiness to Ray than to Ford.

Zach is nearly as "pockety" now as BLM/MBT.

Yes, Zach used to be more mobile, but even then he was a scrambler to buy time to still throw.  He was never a run-first Ford/Crum, or even a run-often VAJ/Rourke.  Heck, he is even more pockety than Mike Reilly.  And by "run" I mean running past the LoS, not just wheeling out to buy time to pass.

Quote from: Big Daddy on September 10, 2024, 01:21:42 AMbut he isn't like Ray in his late years standing and throwing, not yet anyway

I'd place the stress on your addendum: "not yet anyway".  Every season Zach becomes more Ray and less Reilly.  And that's normal seeing his age and history.  Will he ever be fully-Ray, immovable from the pocket?  Nah, probably not.

Maybe that's why I worded it "traditional CFL pocket passer", because the best ones in that mold weren't pure pocket passers, they were pocket-mostly passers.  And that is what probably typifies the best CFL QBs of the last decade.  Ray then becomes the anomaly, an extreme used to make a point / comparison.

Great clarification, that's exactly what I was wondering.  I think part of the confusion for me is the definition of running past LoS as defining being "pockety" as I agree, Zach doesn't do that a ton (thankfully with his history) but he evades tackles a lot by leaving the pocket to extend plays.

And again I agree - he privy winky won't become a pure pocket passer like later Ray or Calvillo.  For now I still see him as way more mobile and thus further away from either of them and more in keeping with the run and gun young'uns in the league.  At least for now.

It sounds like you're talking about younger Zach, to be honest.

He used to look like Tommy Clements 2.0 but he doesn't play like that anymore. You see it in flashes, but it's not central to his game anymore.
