How we'll lineup tomorrow in our regular season finale.

Bombers beef up depth with return of special teams ace Michael Ayers
By 3Down Staff -October 25, 2024

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will field an unchanged starting lineup for their pivotal regular-season finale against the Montreal Alouettes but will beef up their depth with the return of a couple of key faces.

Chief among the returnees is rookie linebacker Michael Ayers, who had carved out a significant role for himself this season before missing the last game with a hip injury. The Ashland product leads the team with 16 special teams tackles while also adding 11 defensive tackles, a sack, and a pick-six.

Joining him back in the linebacking corps after a one-game absence is backup SAM Michael Griffin. Fullback Bailey Feltmate is also back from a long injury to add to the special teams unit. Depth players sitting out as a result are American defensive back Tyrique Mcghee, American linebacker Bryce Notree, Canadian linebacker Max Charbonneau, and Global linebacker Fabian Weitz.

In the trenches, Winnipeg has benched defensive end Celestin Haba after he recorded six defensive tackles, one sack, and one forced fumble in 10 games. Defensive tackle Miles Fox, who has not seen action since Week 2, will dress in his place. On the other side of the ball, rookie Canadian offensive lineman Gabe Wallace returns from a knee injury to dress as the seventh man.

The Bombers (10-7) can clinch first place in the West Division with a victory when they travel to visit the Montreal Alouettes (12-4-1) on Saturday, October 26 at 3:00 p.m. EDT.

RB Walter Fletcher, REC Austin Mack to play in Alouettes' finale
By 3Down Staff -October 25, 2024

The Montreal Alouettes are resting fewer key pieces than most expected for their regular-season finale on Saturday, including re-inserting two major offensive weapons into the lineup.

Running back Walter Fletcher and receiver Austin Mack will both play after sitting out last week. Fletcher has carried 129 times for 711 yards and three touchdowns through 16 games, while catching 67 passes for 641 yards and three more majors through the air. Mack has only played two games since returning from the NFL, notching seven catches for 124 yards, but was a CFL all-star in 2023.

The pair will catch passes from quarterback Cody Fajardo, who will get the start as Jason Maas' offence looks to regain its form. Running back Stevie Scott III and Canadian receiver Shedler Fervius have been returned to the practice roster to make room for the starting pair.

The offence will have to make do without right tackle Josh Donovan, who exited last week's game with a knee injury. Jamar McGloster will step in to replace him but is listed as a game-time decision with a hand injury. Canadian Theo Grant will dress as a seventh offensive lineman.

Montreal's nominee for Most Outstanding Canadian, defensive end Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund, will also be out this week with a quad injury. The 28-year-old has recorded 36 defensive tackles, five special teams tackles, seven sacks, and a forced fumble in 17 games. Lwal Uguak will start in his place, with Brock Gowanlock drawing into the lineup.

Kick returner James Letcher Jr. will be the only player to sit out this week as a healthy scratch. Rookie Tyjon Lindsey will get the nod for his first CFL appearance.

The Alouettes (12-4-1) will host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (10-7) on Saturday, October 26 at 3:00 p.m. EDT.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers release linebacker Cam Bright
October 30, 2024 Michael Heilman

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers released linebacker Cam Bright from the practice squad on Wednesday according to the CFL Transactions page.

Cam Bright is six foot and weighs 222 pounds. The 25-year-old from Cleveland, Ohio, made two tackles (2 solo) in three preseason games for the Cleveland Browns in 2023. The Seattle Seahawks signed Bright as an undrafted free agent on May 12, 2023.

The Calgary Stampeders signed Bright on February 14, 2024. He played in two preseason games making four tackles and two tackles on special teams. The Stampeders released him on June 1, 2024. The Ottawa Redblacks signed Bright on September 18, 2024, and spent a month on the practice squad. The Redblacks released him on October 17, 2024. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers signed Bright on October 20, 2024, and spent a week on the practice squad.

Collegiately, Bright played four seasons at Pittsburgh (2018-21) making 186 tackles (110 solo, 76 assists), 24.5 tackles for loss, nine sacks, one interception, one touchdown, four pass breakups, three forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries in 52 games for the Panthers.

Then, he transferred to Washington in 2022 making 60 tackles (31 solo, 29 assists), 4.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, one interception, and one pass breakup in 13 games for the Huskies. He was named an All-PAC 12 Honorable Mention and Third Team All-PAC 12 by Phil Steele in 2022.

How we're lining up for tomorrow's Western Final.

Brandon Alexander returns for Winnipeg Blue Bombers in West Final
By John Hodge -November 8, 2024

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will have Brandon Alexander back in the starting lineup when they host the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the West Final.

The 31-year-old native of Orlando, Fla. has missed the past month due to a hand injury he suffered in the team's win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He made 57 tackles and one forced fumble over 16 games this season before being replaced in the starting lineup by Jake Kelly. Alexander is one of the team's longest-tenured players, having made 268 defensive tackles, 20 special teams tackles, eight interceptions, and seven forced fumbles over 89 career CFL games since joining the Blue Bombers in 2017.

The club may also have Kyrie Wilson back as their starting weak-side linebacker, though he's been listed as a game-time decision. The 32-year-old native of Fresno, Calif. played only eight regular season games this year and has dressed just once since the end of July. He recorded 28 tackles and one sack this season, making seven starts at weak-side linebacker and one start at middle linebacker. In total, Wilson has made 161 defensive tackles, 15 special teams tackles, six sacks, one interception, and one forced fumble over 51 career CFL games.

Winnipeg has also made a change along the defensive line, moving defensive tackles Jamal Woods and Devin Adams to the one-game injured list. Miles Fox will start alongside Jake Thomas despite dressing for only three games during the regular season due to injury, making three defensive tackles.

The Blue Bombers will dress only six defensive linemen, which seems fitting based on head coach Mike O'Shea's comments following the Banjo Bowl in September. When asked about his team's lack of pressure on Trevor Harris, he credited the quarterback for getting rid of the ball quickly, joking that he sometimes wants his team's defence to rush only one defender on obvious passing downs. As such, expect Winnipeg to often drop nine defenders back in coverage on second-and-long.

Nick Taylor, who signed with the team last month, will dress in a depth role at boundary halfback. The 36-year-old won a Grey Cup as a member of the Blue Bombers in 2021 but hasn't played a game all year. He made 25 defensive tackles, one special teams tackles, one interception, and one forced fumble over 11 games with the Calgary Stampeders last season. O'Shea credited Taylor's speed and communication skills this week, so it wouldn't be a surprise if he came in as an extra defender on passing downs.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers (11-7) will host the Saskatchewan Roughriders (10-8-1) for the West Final on Saturday, Nov. 9. Kickoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. EST and the game has already sold out.

Riders lose left tackle Trevor Reid for West Final
By 3Down Staff -November 8, 2024

The Saskatchewan Roughriders will be a little weaker on Trevor Harris' blindside for the West Final.

Rookie American left tackle Trevor Reid will be unable to play on Saturday after a knee injury while being rolled up on. The Louisville product has started all 18 regular season games plus one postseason contest in his first season in the CFL.

Veteran American Trevon Tate, who was acquired mid-season after being released by the Calgary Stampeders, will bump across the line from right tackle to serve as the blindside protector. The West Division finalist for Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman, Logan Ferland, will move out to right tackle after playing centre last week and will be replaced by Peter Godber, who served as the sixth man in his return from injury last week. Former all-star guard Ryan Sceviour will dress as insurance.

The Riders will get a boost on the other side of the line of scrimmage, as veteran defensive tackle Anthony Lanier II is set to dress in a rotational role after sitting out the past few games as a healthy scratch. The 31-year-old has had a down year, recording just 10 defensive tackles, two sacks, and one forced fumble. However, the former NFLer has recorded 16 sacks in 42 career CFL games.

Rookie Canadian linebacker Melique Straker will return from a hip injury and can be expected to contribute on special teams after recording nine tackles in 10 games. Canadian defensive back Jaxon Ford (knee) has been placed on the one-game injured list, while running back Thomas Bertrand-Hudon has been moved to the practice roster.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders (10-8-1) will visit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (11-7) for the Western Final on Saturday, November 9. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. EST at Princess Auto Stadium.

48 Hour Primer - The Build
November 15, 2024 Ed Tait

VANCOUVER — It's an expression we've used before but will bust out once more with the hours ticking down to Sunday's 111th Grey Cup:

'Any jackass can tear down a barn. It takes a carpenter to build one.'

We bring this up today in a closer examination of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers entire roster as it prepares to chase a third championship in five years against the Toronto Argonauts on Sunday.

It's not easy to climb to the summit, as they say, and even more difficult to stay there. And, yes, we understand the Blue Bombers are O-fer their last two championship game appearances, losing in 2022 and 2023 by a combined total of five points after victories in 2019 and 2021.

But they have built something special here that has endured. And it's taken a collection of carpenters and brick layers, electricians and architects to keep this team in the championship conversation in a league where free agency is often a talent feeding free-for-all, where drafting can be so hit and miss and finding American talent that can play — and fits the culture here — isn't as simple as so many think.

To that point, a question to Blue Bombers head coach Mike O'Shea from earlier this week: 'It feels like the 99th Grey Cup in a row that the Blue Bombers have been here' — to which O'Shea interrupted and said with a laugh, 'that would be fun, wouldn't it? — 'but from the start of the streak to now, what's gone into building that culture of winning in Winnipeg?'

"It's pretty simple — I think you just bring in the right guys," O'Shea said. "It's a very talented group for the last pile of years and it's guys that are excellent leaders, care so much and are great teammates. You fill a room with guys like that and... I don't want to sound like this, but you sort of let them go. They run it. It's their team and as long as you keep room full of guys who can play good football but are good guys then it's going to be like that."
