QUICK HITS  TRAINING CAMP — DAY 17
MAY 28, 2024

He's back:
OL Pat Neufeld's workload continues to progress upon his return to the practice field in the last two days. He said Tuesday he had suffered an injury in offseason training, but is good to go now. "You don't realize how much you miss football until you're watching and standing and you should be out there participating," he said. "It's great to be back."

Comings/goings: The Blue Bombers trimmed their roster on Tuesday, releasing three receivers in Peter Afful, Tyler Adams and Jaylen Hall and OL Khalil Keith.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers release four players including WR Tyler Adams
May 28, 2024

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers released wide receivers Tyler Adams, Peter Afful, and Jaylen Hall, and offensive lineman Khalil Keith on Tuesday.

Tyler Adams
is six foot and weighs 190 pounds. The 25-year-old from Louisville, Ohio, signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2023 but did not play the preseason. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers signed Adams on January 11, 2024. He played one preseason game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2024 making four catches for 61 yards (15.3 AVG).

Collegiately, Adams played five seasons at Harvard University (2017-21) with 21 catches for 305 yards, three touchdowns, six carries for 131 yards, one touchdown, and five tackles (4 solo, 1 assist) in 15 games for the Crimson.

Then, Adams transferred to Butler in 2022 with 39 catches for 689 yards, five touchdowns, and two carries for 11 yards in 11 games for the Bulldogs. He was named Third Team All-PFL by Phil Steele in 2022.

Peter Afful Jr.
is five foot ten and weighs 190 pounds. The 26-year-old from Lawrence, Kansas, attended a rookie minicamp for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers signed Afful Jr. on January 17, 2024. He appeared in one preseason game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2024 recording no stats.

Collegiately, Afful Jr. played one season at Coffeyville Community College in 2018 with three catches for 41 yards in four games for the Red Ravens. Then, he transferred to Washburn University (2019-22) with 63 catches for 1,220 yards, 16 touchdowns, eight carries for 170 yards, and eight kick returns for 138 yards in 23 games for the Ichabods. He was named Second Team All-MIAA and an All-MIAA Honorable Mention.

Jaylen Hall is six foot three and weighs 180 pounds. The 25-year-old from Macomb, Michigan, attended a rookie minicamp with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023. Then Hall signed with the Edmonton Elks on July 16, 2023, and spent three days on the practice squad before he was released on July 19, 2023.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers signed Hall on March 8, 2024. Hall appeared in one preseason game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2024 recording no stats.

Collegiately, Hall played four seasons at Western Michigan (2018-21) with 85 catches for 1,532 yards and 14 touchdowns in 43 games for the Broncos. In 2020, Hall finished second on the team in receiving TDs (7), trailing only 2021 NFL Draft second-round pick D'Wayne Eskridge's eight.

Then, Hall transferred to Western Kentucky in 2022 making 53 catches for 759 yards, six touchdowns, two carries for 19 yards, nine punt returns for 106 yards, and one touchdown in 11 games for the Hilltoppers. Hall recorded over 100 yards receiving in three of four games to end the season including a season-high 138 yards and a touchdown in WKU's R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl Championship.

Khalil Keith is six foot five and weighs 314 pounds. The 25-year-old from Alpine, Alabama, played two games for the Philadelphia Stars (USFL) in 2023. The Stars' offense ranked third in passing (213.3 yards per game), finished last in rushing (77 yards per game), 20 touchdowns, and allowed a league-high 29 sacks. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers signed Keith on March 27, 2024. Keith played in one preseason game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2024.

Collegiately, Keith played 47 games in six seasons at Baylor (2017-22), playing left guard and right tackle in 47 games, of which 20 were starts for the Bears.

In 2022, Pro Football Focus ranked Keith as the 11th-best tackle in the Big 12 and the 167th-best in college football, earning a 67.7 rating, with an 81.8 pass-blocking and a 59.2 run-blocking grade. His 81.8 pass-blocking rating was the third-best in the Big 12. In 2023, he played in the Hula Bowl.

Keith was a two-time All-State offensive lineman from Winterboro High School in Alpine, Alabama. He also earned the 2016 first-team 1A-3A All-Talladega County honors after helping Winterboro to a 6-5 record and playoffs.

Winnipeg is dressing a very young group for tomorrow's preseason game despite being at home (when teams usually dress more veterans).

Terry Wilson and Darren Grainger, who signed with the team five days ago, will be the only two quarterbacks.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers release 29, including preseason hero Chris Smith
By John Hodge -June 2, 2024

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have finalized their training camp cuts for the 2024 season, releasing 29 players and establishing a 12-man practice roster.

Rookie running back Chris Smith has been cut despite returning a punt 109 yards for a touchdown in Winnipeg's second preseason game. It has since been reported that he sustained an injury during the game.

Other notable names who were released include rookie quarterback Darren Grainger, the versatile Ronnie Blackmon, former NFL pass-rusher Chauncey Rivers, and University of Manitoba products Collin Kornelson and AK Gassama.

First-year CFL players who appear to have made Winnipeg's active roster include quarterback Terry Wilson, fullback Michael Chris-Ike, receivers Kevens Clercius, Myron Mitchell, and Ontaria Wilson, offensive lineman Gabe Wallace, defensive linemen Devin Adams, Kyle Samson, and Jamal Woods, linebackers Michael Ayers and Max Charbonneau, and defensive backs Terrell Bonds and Marquise Bridges.

Canadian long snapper Ian Leroux was placed on the suspended list as he's expected to return to Université Laval for his final year of U Sports eligibility.

Ed Tait   @EdTaitWFC
Just FYI... Chris Smith was hurt in Friday's preseason game.

Derek Taylor   @DTonOB
Right now the Bombers have 9 Canadians in starting spots. Since they're only required to have 7 they have a lot of flexibility, if they want it.

Any surprises from the Bombers?

-Tyrique McGhee being on PR and Terrell Bonds being on the active. McGhee was consistently the first CB up after Jamal Parker's injury.

-RB Chris Smith's release after his big return (but Ed Tait pointing out Smith was injured)

Bombers surprises cont.

-DE Chauncey Rivers...Doug Brown liked some of his pops. But it must mean Haba & Garbutt aren't injured long-term.

-Keeping Marquise Bridges on active...is it the benefit of a 🇨🇦 starting at corner? Or is Alexander a question for Thursday?

Some Bombers observations:

-Cutting RBs Brown & Rosery gives me confidence that Brady Oliveira will be ready for Thursday.

-Is Myron Mitchell the returner?

Derek Taylor   @DTonOB
Following the Bombers cuts, here's what I have for a depth chart. By my count they'll need to move 3 players to various injured lists.

UPON FURTHER REVIEW PRESEASON #2 + CUT-DOWN DAY
JUNE 2, 2024  Ed Tait

Canadian Football League roster cut-down day has become a fascinating study with fans and media alike sliding almost every transaction under the microscope searching for a deeper meaning.

It's essentially seeking out the why, the how come and what were they thinking behind how a roster is pieced together which makes watching the process unfold so intriguing for outsiders.

So, in that vein, let's begin by getting the details of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers roster moves – announced Sunday morning – out there for further perusal.

Released by the club after Friday's final preseason game were:

American receivers Sy Barnett, Ronnie Blackmon, Isaiah Coulter, Aron Cruickshank and Josh Vann. Blackmon, Cruickshank and Vann were also kick return candidates.

University of Manitoba receiver and sixth-round 2024 CFL Draft pick AK Gassama.

American defensive backs Russell Dandy, Demetries Ford, Bill Hackett, Isaiah Norman, Travon Fuller, Patrick Rogers and Juan Lua.

Quarterback Darren Grainger, who left Friday's game with an injury.

American offensive linemen Chris Ivy and Chidi Okeke.

Canadian offensive linemen Ethan Kalra and Michael Vlahogiannis, selected in the fifth and seventh rounds in this year's draft.

A trio of 2023 CFL Draft picks in defensive back Bret MacDougall, running back/receiver Jonathan Rosery and defensive tackle Collin Kornelson.

Two free agent Canadians in punter Dante Mastrogriuseppe and defensive back Nico McCarthy.

American linebackers Dylan Moses, Johnny Petrishen and Tre Thomas.

American defensive linemen Chauncey Rivers and Taylor Upshaw.

And American running back and return candidate Chris Smith.

Meanwhile, the club added the following players to their practice roster:

Three American offensive linemen in Larnell Coleman, Kendall Randolph and Micah Vanterpool.

Americans Tyrique McGhee and Michael Griffin, both defensive backs, linebacker Jeremiah Gemmel and receivers Josh Johnson and Keric Wheatfall.

Canadian defensive end Owen Hubert, selected in the eighth round in the 2024 CFL Draft.

Canadian receiver Jeremy Murphy, who dressed for two games last year.

And two Global linebackers in Lucky Ogbevoen and Fabian Weitz.

As well, long snapper Ian Leroux – drafted this year as a potential replacement for Mike Benson down the road – will be returning to Laval this fall and was put on the suspended list.

A few things to bite into here...

-The biggest surprise release for most was likely Smith, considering he had a sensational 109-yard punt return TD Friday night and appeared to stand out among the candidates to replace Janarion Grant. Smith, however, was also nicked up in the win. Of the four players who returned kicks Friday – Smith, Cruickshank, Vann and receiver Myron Mitchell, only Mitchell remains on the roster. We'll find out more about what the team's plans might be on Monday at practice and with head coach Mike O'Shea's media availability afterward.

-McGhee had been pencilled in opposite Tyrell Ford as one of the starting corners, but with him now on the practice roster it means someone else stood out more. Two new defensive backs made the team, FYI, in Terrell Bonds and Marquise Bridges.

-Celestin Haba and TyJuan Garbutt – both of whom were with the club last year and had solid training camps – are on the roster and pencilled in to replace Jackson Jeffcoat. The D-line also features three other new faces in defensive tackles Jamal Woods and Devin Adams and 2024 second-round CFL Draft pick (20th overall), Kyle Samson.

-Keeping three American O-linemen on the roster is a shrewd decision. Veteran Eric Lofton has been getting most of the work at right tackle, but the team does very much like Coleman and Randolph – both tackles – and Vanterpool, who has been primarily lining up at guard.

-The Blue Bombers 2024 CFL Draft class is well represented on a team already stacked with Canadian talent as Samson, mentioned above, as well as receiver Kevens Clercius (2nd round, 13th overall), running back/fullback Michael Chris-Ike (2nd round, 14th overall), offensive lineman Gabe Wallace (2nd round, 17th overall) are all on the active roster with Hubert on the practice roster. The only other 2024 Blue Bombers draft pick not mentioned is massive OL Giovanni Manu, who is with the Detroit Lions.

Worth noting: 2023 eight-round draft pick Max Charbonneau, a linebacker who returned to school last year after training camp, has made the team as did new receivers Ontaria Wilson and linebacker Michael Ayers.

-Grainger, the QB, was released on Sunday and did not finish the game on Friday due to an undisclosed injury. That essentially hands the third-string QB job to Terry Wilson.

Expect more clarity on the roster and potential depth chart beginning Monday and leading up to Thursday's season opener against the Montreal Alouettes at Princess Auto Stadium.

And while Friday's final preseason game recap also feels like it happened eons ago – our recap can be found here — here's more on the fallout from that game in this week's UPON FURTHER REVIEW...

FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH...
the following Blue Bombers projected starters did not play a single snap in the preseason:

-Quarterback Zach Collaros

-Running back Brady Oliveira

-Right guard Pat Neufeld

-Receiver Dalton Schoen

-Receiver Nic Demski

-Safety Brandon Alexander

-Defensive back Deatrick Nichols

-Defensive back Evan Holm

-DT Jake Thomas

-LB Kyrie Wilson

-LB Adam Bighill (six-game injured list)

Again, so much of this was the coaching staff's decision to have its star talent healthy and good to go by Thursday and who is on the field for practice Monday will be telling.

THREE NUMBERS FROM FRIDAY... that stood out after a second glance at the statistical package, which can be found here:

-Wilson was 10-of-17 for 70 yards with two interceptions. Over his two preseason appearances he completed 20 of 32 passes for 185 yards with one TD and two picks.

-The Blue Bombers had just seven first downs and 121 yards net offence against the Stamps – and 20 first downs for 358 yards net offence in both preseason games – but those totals mean zilch given all the regulars out of the lineup.

-Unofficially, the Blue Bombers saw 90 players dress over the two preseason games which, from this perch, is entirely the point of training camp. Those concerned about how much rust may have set in with the regulars will start to get answers Thursday against Montreal

AND FINALLY... if only fans could have seen the size-large grin on the face of defensive tackle Devin Adams late Friday night. Adams popped off the page in the game against Calgary, as did fellow new defensive tackle Jamal Woods.

We told you of Adams, a late arrival from tiny Peru State in Nebraska and the New England Patriots rookie camp last week in this story and long before he knew he has earned a roster spot he was still a bundle of energy in the locker room after his first CFL experience.

"It was fast, enjoyable, fun, hard – I could give you a whole bunch of adjectives, but the biggest one is 'fun'," he said. "It was more than a blessing to be out there. It was fun, electric, the fans were in tune.

"I just gave it my all and tried to make every play I could make within the scheme. I really tried to just enjoy the game."

Winnipeg's depth chart for tomorrow.

Ontaria Wilson starts in Rasheed Bailey's old slotback spot, while Terrell Bonds replaces Demerio Houston at boundary cornerback. Myron Mitchell is the returner.

Derek Taylor  @DTonOB
No surprises on the Bombers roster for Thursday.

I'd expect to see Brian Cole get a bunch of snaps. And very curious to see how they deploy Michael Chris-Ike in his CFL debut.

One note for the roster:
'Ontaria' is not pronounced like the province. 'ARE' instead of 'AIR'
He says it: on-TAR-ee-ah Wilson.
He also says calling him by his nickname, 'Pokey', is fine.

Bob Irving  @BobIrvingCJOB
Bombers have 8 new starters from the 24 who started last yr's Grey cup game, in their lineup for Thursdays opener vs the Als...DB's Ford and Bonds, LB Gauthier, D-Linemen Fox and Haba, O-Linemen Dobson and Lofton and receiver Ontario Wilson.

Jeff Hamilton  @jeffkhamilton
Bombers depth chart and rosters ahead of Thursday's season-opener against the visiting Montreal Alouettes. A total of 10 Canadian starters for Winnipeg, including Shayne Gauthier in for Adam Bighill at middle linebacker.

Darrin Bauming  @DarrinBauming
I still expect to see a lot of Wilson at MLB and Cole at WLB — the #Bombers D under new defensive coordinator Jordan Younger utilizes multiple-multiple personnel and positioning looks.

John Hodge  @JohnDHodge
Joshua Donovan will make his first career CFL start at right tackle in place of an injured Jamar McGloster.

The six-foot-six, 325-pound blocker was primarily a guard at the University of Arizona. This might be a matchup the Blue Bombers can exploit.

BLUE BOMBERS TRANSACTIONS – JUNE 9

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has added National fullback/linebacker Bailey Feltmate and American linebacker Tony Jones to the practice roster.

Feltmate
