QUICK HITS -TRAINING CAMP — DAY 1
MAY 12, 2024 by Ed Tait

Comings/goings: The Blue Bombers made a series of moves to get down to the 85-player limit by Saturday night (not including 'non-counters' like draft picks). Eight players were released in DL Ali Fayad, Jordan Lewis, David Green and Anthony Bennett, receivers Bryce Mitchell and Keytaon Thompson, kicker Jose Borregales and offensive tackle Kendall Randolph, while DBs James Campbell, Montrae Braswell, DL Kenny Randall and receiver Braxton Burmeister were all moved to the suspended list.

The most notable of that group is Bennett, the Canadian DE who played in every game last year, including the playoffs. Blue Bombers head coach Mike O'Shea said the club's top pick from last year's draft came into camp with an injury and he's certainly still in the team's plans.

"He's just not healthy," said O'Shea. "He's a guy that hope would be able to rehab and we can get back in the room — we're certainly not writing him off, for sure. We picked him for a reason. We like him."

Asked later in his media session what he liked about Bennett's rookie year, O'Shea added:

"I think he did well and like every other rookie, when they come into their second year they're primed to really show a lot more. And just with the comfort level I thought he was going to come in and do great things. For that young man it's unfortunate. We give him a day to collect his thoughts and then kick him in the butt to get him going and he'll be fired up (Monday) t0 get after it and see where the rehab's going to take him."

The Blue Bombers also plan to rehab Fayad and Kendall Randolph, the former Alabama OL, with O'Shea indicating "there's some guys we'd like to let Al (Couture, head athletic therapist) and his staff work with and see where we can get them."

Not practising on Day 1 were RB Brady Oliveira, SB Nic Demski, OL Pat Neufeld and S Brandon Alexander. Quizzed specifically about Oliveira, Demski and Neufeld — three starting Canadians — O'Shea said: "They'll get back when they can get back. Those three names have proven to be extremely important and we're going to make sure when they take the field finally they'll be in the best shape they can be."

FWIW: The Blue Bombers practice session opened with Eric Lofton, who started 14 games with Saskatchewan last year, at right tackle and Liam Dobson at left guard — they are the leading candidates to replace Jermarcus Hardrick and Geoff Gray, respectively. Tui Eli was at Neufeld's right guard spot up front along the OL.

Other notable switches: with Oliveira out, Johnny Augustine was with the first group, while Ravi Alston was working in the spot left held by Rasheed Bailey. Jeremy Murphy worked in Demski's spot, while Redha Kramdi took some turns at safety for Alexander.

Bombers o-line now in some trouble with Neufeld retiring or is that is just some ploy so he can skip camp the old boar! 😉

Maybe they will bring back Geoff Gray if he still wants to play. Hardrick already left for Sask. Eli was a starter before he rebelled on taking the COVID shots a few years ago. Dobson seems like an up and comer. All other OL on the roster I have no clue about or pure rookies or practice rosters guys from last year. That OL feeder pipeline better come through this season!!

Pigskin

Wallace has looked good at practice, but we will see how he does in really game action on Monday. Mountain of a man that seems to have good feet. Has been practicing in PN53 spot all week.
Don't go through life looking in the rearview mirror.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers release former Ohio State standout K.J. Hill, sign two
By 3Down Staff -May 18, 2024

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have released American receiver K.J. Hill and American defensive back Marcus Hillman.

Hill was expected to compete for a starting position in the club's receiving corps, though it appears injury problems led to his release.

The 26-year-old made 201 receptions over 50 career games at Ohio State University, breaking the previous record held by former NFL Pro Bowl selection David Boston. He finished his collegiate career with 2,332 receiving yards, 20 receiving touchdowns, and three Big Ten championships.

Hill was a seventh-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Chargers. He dressed for 21 games over two seasons with the team, recording 10 receptions for 103 yards.

Hillman played 47 collegiate games at Elon University, an NCAA Division I FCS program in North Carolina. The native of Camden, N.J. recorded 101 tackles, 13 sacks, one interception, eight forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, and five pass knockdowns as a member of the Phoenix.

The Blue Bombers have also signed two American players, including receiver Josh Vann and defensive back Michael Griffin II.

Both players started training camp with the Calgary Stampeders but were released by the team on May 15.

Prior to his time with the Stampeders, Vann was signed with the Carolina Panthers after going unselected in the 2023 NFL Draft. He recorded one catch for 21 yards and four returns for 43 yards during preseason action. He was waived near the end of training camp. He also spent time with the UFL's Memphis Showboats.

The 24-year-old made 108 catches for 1,352 yards and 10 touchdowns over 57 collegiate games at the University of South Carolina. He also ran the ball seven times for 73 yards, returned 19 punts for 239 yards, and returned three kickoffs for 48 yards.

The native of Atlanta, Ga. was chosen as the team's offensive MVP in 2021 after leading the club with 43 catches for 679 yards and five touchdowns.

Griffin played 13 games for the Stampeders last season and recorded 29 defensive tackles, six special teams tackles, and one sack during starts at strong-side linebacker, field-side halfback, and safety. The 25-year-old native of Minneapolis, Minn. was previously a member of the Tennessee Titans.

Winnipeg will open the regular season by hosting the Montreal Alouettes on Thursday, June 6 at Princess Auto Stadium.
