Weird, that is the exact injury Nichols had...

And Nichols was considerably younger when it happened to him.

Despite being the same injury, they can be different in severity. Some cases damage the cartilage, some bone only. Some require many pins, some less. I guess they know more once it is opened up but they can also tell a lot just from the MRI which they do first. They seem to think there is a chance of being back this year, so possibly he has a milder case.

Recovery time seems to be 3-6 months, or somewhere in that vicinity.

Rehabbing tendons seems to take a lot longer than healing bones.  While the primary diagnosis is a bone issue, there is no way that the tendons were not damaged in that twist.  Nichols had the injury ion the 2012 playoffs, and rehabbed in time for the next season, only to tear his ACL in the last preseason game, requiring surgery and missing 2013.  So, even if the bone heals, what is the state of the rest of his leg.  Ask Masoli what coming back after injury is all about.

Legs are the most important physical component of a QB, and we are seeing so many injuries contact and non contact to QB's legs.  Collaros missed a lot of time to injury, but luckily it was only his brain that was affected.  just kidding, concussions are no joking matter.  But he seems to have healed fine from those issues, whereas leg issues are not an easy or for sure re-hab.

That puts Harris' earliest return at mid-October under the most ideal of circumstances.

That seems pretty unrealistic, not to mention reckless if the Riders were to activate him that quickly.

Yeah. Most realistic (but still optimistic) would be start of playoffs and if the Riders are successful enough to get there, by that point would they want to throw in their cold, fresh-off-injury, 38 yo QB in when hypothetically Fine would have performed well enough to get them there and would be warm? I suppose then, H-Tare would be the backup and could come in for relief and help take them as far as he can. But after that, what happens next? Who would possibly re-sign him and would he want to play for vet insurance money as a 39 year old?

Time to hang 'em up man, sadly.

What will be the sad thing is... if he is declared healthy for the playoffs, that means that even if he doesn't start, he bumps a QB off the AR, so no postseason cheques.  If they don't activate him to the AR, then he gets no post season cheques (which he would not have earned anyways, but still).  I guess they could cut him... but would you?  Seems cruel...

It would seem more cruel to prevent an outgoing vet QB from collecting his last cheque over a rookie who is broke but has many playing days ahead to earn those.

He's gonna try to get back and if he does you want a vet at least on the roster, just in case. Imagine Fines does great all year but can't finish a playoff game. No way they cannot dress a cleared to play Harris.

Cal Murphy was ruthless in this regard (contracts).  While I wouldn't suggest cutting Harris, this is business and Cal was great because he rode that fine line.

Doubt that Ssk will cut Harris as the fan base there would rebel against management.  He appears to be well liked in Regina.  If his playing days are over, I can see him coming back to them as a QB coach if he wants to stay in the game.  Interesting times.

Harris has talked openly about wanting to play into his 40's. If this is something he can rehab from, he'll want to be back.

And if a QB wants to play, there's a team who needs him, lol.

The easy money for old QB's is just laying around, entry level coaching might pay him $75k, that's over a $300k drop off.

No backup QB gets $375k... he might get $150k if the starter is not getting $400k+...  so, not that much of a drop off...

If Harris recovers in a year or less he can still cash in as a legitimate starter.
