Neither team played well enough to win. But strangely exciting at the end. Typical Harris game, over 300 yards passing, one touchdown, 11 points. He looked like an MVP for that last drive.

How can you the Edm coaches not be on top of this? You've got a raw U.S rookie back there and you don't coach him up at a critical time? inexcusible.
Oct 10, 1966

On the last play of the game, Bud Grant sent Billy Cooper into the end zone with instructions to "return the kick". In that era, "return the kick" meant to punt the ball out of the end zone. Joe Zuger punted the ball into the end zone and Cooper was rouged for the game winning single when he attempted to run the ball out of the end zone.

After the game, Coach Grant said that he should have sent punter Ed Ulmer into the end zone because he would have known what to do.

It happens to the best of them.

Note: yes, that is the proper way to use the term "rouge"

Holy smokes, youth teams know enough to run the ball out of the end zone or give up a single!! There is no excuse , none. Everyone on a youth teams bench is yelling run it out before the ball is even kicked. You mean to tell me none of the boneheads in the elks sideline said anything!?  Pretty much explains why they lose a lot!!! Looks good on them!

How dumb does a returner need to be not to learn the rules of the game he's playing, he's been around for at least 6 weeks and it's not like he had to memorize a playbook in that time, he only has to learn what to do in a handful of different situations.  Unbelievably dumb.

I'm with Goldie.  If they are picking only some games to show in the USA, it's unfortunate this is one of them.  We're trying to showcase the best of our league and hook some new fans.

The game got fun at the end, but how many casual USA fans stayed that long?  Most tuned out by the 4th I bet.  It was a horrifically awful game, even worse than the CGY 6-3 at the half game the other week.

But maybe the few that stayed watching got revved up by the ending.  That's classic CFL right there.  Some noob IMP screwing up the rouge, then is-he-over-the-LoS suspense and a great INT.  A great, classic CFL ending.

And everyone in Riderville gets to go mental.  The ones still awake, that is.

SSK OL is hot garbage.  I thought it was supposed to be improved this year.  Were there 2 changes on the OL roster this week vs their "preferred" setup?  EDM DL was getting through with 3, and often easily with 4.

Corny showed he's still better than the other EDM options.  And I'm happy to see he stayed calm all the way to the end, and almost pulled out the FG-range win.  They needed some more creativity on that last drive.  Got too predictable and the vet SSK DB made them pay.

Oh ya, EDM OL is hot garbage too.  SSK has some excuses as they had many in-game injuries and already had a bunch of guys out.  I'm still wondering how they put up 27 on us the other week, though.

CFL isn't looking too great yet this year.  Scoring is down again (ex-Bombers and BC).  Too many teams are looking substandard.  Maybe the new(ish) garbage-leages down south really are stealing all our talent.  Someone needs to ask Prukop to explain what the draw was for him there, and what the draw was for him to come back.  Don't pull any punches, we need to know the reality.

(...updated with new info...)

The funny thing was, I'm pretty sure the call on the field was IFP, but they never announced it and must have picked it up.  I just wish they'd go through the motions and show every step: announce the penalty on the field or drop the flag and announce the pick up.  Then go to the review on the basis that we know what the field call is!!  The field call is all-important because of the increased evidence requirement to overturn.  So often this season they just announce magical pronouncements from on high without following any normal procedure (see the IB on Grant's return on benched Demski).

Last thing: on the screw-up rouge... even if you don't understand and you're thinking you want to give up the rouge, you don't jog back to the ball at 1/4 speed when your team has 60s left to drive the field to get a FG!!  You hustle your butt off to that ball regardless.  Who's the ST coach for EDM, Peewee Herman?  You don't tell him this before the KO??

Was this a "good" game?  Was it one we want on CBS?

Probably not, but what it was was interesting.  Talk about a lesson in the rouge.  After watching Edm score *4* rouges, how does Sims not know to run that ball out?

As Jim Barker called it, weird.  Very, very weird game.

I feel sorry for the Riders, that win was horrible, at home.  One point over the Elks.  Can you win and go down in the power rankings?

I guess, though, at the end of the year, they don't ask how, but rather how many...
Unabashed positron.  Blue koolaid in my fridge.  I wear my blue sunglasses at night.  Homer, d'oh.

The SC with Jay right after the game had a long segment with Barker and it was really good!!  They gave Barker like 5 mins to talk about what was on his mind without much interruption or time constraint and it worked so much better than the 30-60s soundbite format the panel uses in-game.

The panel guys that sometimes stutter and whiff in the time-constrained format might do better if they open it up a bit and relax.  Chesi, Barker, and even Lapo and Dunni would do better with a more relaxed format like on SC w/Jay.

when the score was still 11-3 late in the 4th quarter I tuned into CHED radio which covers the Elks games.....you had this feeling that somehow the Elks would blow it once again and they did.    Even after allowing the rouge you had the feeling they just would find another way to lose and Corny throws a pick to end the game.....it was just a bad throw.   He sort of reminds me of MBT who used to throw for big yardage and find ways to lose games....often throwing ill timed picks.    Neither team deserved to win it and the Riders were somewhat fortunate that Corny threw that pick in the dying seconds.....also not impressed with the CHED announcers calling the game.

Well I'll admit to going to bed about halfway thru the 4th Quarter... I had conceded, no pun intended, that the Riders were going to burn me for a couple of pick'em points by blowing a game they should have easily handled. I was pleasantly surprised to wakeup and find the Elks found another way to lose!
