Blue Bombers sign quarterback Dakota Prukop

WINNIPEG, MB., June 27, 2023 - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has signed quarterback Dakota Prukop to a one-year contract.

Prukop (6-1, 212; Oregon; born: October 17, 1993, in Newport, CA.) returns to the Bombers after dressing for four games this season with the New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League (USFL). In those four games, Prukop completed 31 of 50 pass attempts for 312 yards and three touchdowns while adding 97 yards on the ground and one rushing touchdown. Prukop held the highest passer rating on the team with 91.4.

The 2017 Grey Cup Champion (Toronto) has appeared in 61 CFL games in his career with the Toronto Argonauts (2017-2019), Edmonton Elks (2021) and Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2022). During that time, Prukop has recorded 648 passing yards, 382 rushing yards, six passing touchdowns, and eight rushing touchdowns.

Last season with the Bombers, Prukop had six rushing touchdowns, two passing touchdowns, 181 passing yards and 209 rushing yards. In the 2022 playoffs, Prukop rushed for a touchdown in the West Final and scored two touchdowns in the 109th Grey Cup loss to the Toronto Argonauts.

The club has also released American quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome.

cutting Pigrome is a short sighted move (unless he declined a PR spot). Browns contract is up this year and Prukop is a 3rd stronger through and through.

I'm thinking PiggyT didn't do the FIFO thing?  Maybe, maybe not.

We sure ditched him pronto after the 2 failed X&1 tries.  I thought for sure they'd haul him back out for week 2 & 3 but instead we kept going with undersized Brown.  Something other than just that one drive of 2 failures must have been involved...

I think when MOS was tooting Prukop's horn in the June 27/28 presser(s) and he described the aspects he liked about Pru, he was listing what PiggyT was lacking.  Just my hunch.

But Piggy is young/rookie and he has lots of time to grow into it.  Just not what we can do in this GC-or-bust year, so we risk him signing elsewhere.  We had to do it.

I'm happy with the Pru signing and it was the right call.  If we let Brown go after the season and Piggy is on the couch, we can always pick him up again.

As has been stated, we are not in "rebuild" mode, we are in win now mode. Prukup is better today then Piggy in the 3rd string role.

There are a few other positions we could use someone is better today....but I will save that for another thread or time

Sir Blue and Gold

Who knows but we're a much better third down team with Prukop back. Could be nothing more than that.

Disagree, we will resign Brown.  I liked what Piggy T showed but this move is logical.

I think the implication is that Brown may move on for a starting opportunity.

I think it may depend on what we see from Brown this season.  Has he progressed?  Does he get a full game or 3 due to injury or in garbage-season?  And does he then show up?

If he's not improved vs his garbage-season games of the past then we likely move on.  If he gets no game starts, then it's 50/50: anyone's guess.

Given the state of QBs across the league, he'd get a shot (unless he does get play time and drops the ball).

It's an odd timeline. Brown is 26. Zach is signed for 2 more years after this one. If Brown's good enough, he's not sitting for 5+ seasons behind Zach for an opportunity. If he's not good enough, we'll probably move on before the end of Zach's contract anyway.

And the spectre of Chris Streveler is still out there somewhere...

Interesting insight on Brown guys.  I sure hope we keep him.

As much as I love the Strevenator.....methinks he's not starter material....

Streveler was charismatic, a gamer and a fan favourite because of his smash mouth running style, but he certainly wasn?t a starting Qb. Never will be. For the love of god stop it already.

Pete

strevler when he left Winnipeg wasn't a starting qb, whose to say he hasn't improved especially with all the coaching in the nfl. Obviously he isn't a starting qb for us,, but did you watch the Edmonton game?
