Blue Bombers add to roster - February 15, 2023

WINNIPEG, MB., February 15, 2023 - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announce today the signing of Canadian defensive back Charles-Antoine Beaulieu.

Beaulieu (6-1, 192, Universit? de Laval; Quebec City, PQ) joins the Blue Bombers after a superb career with the Rouge et Or where he was part of two Vanier Cup championship teams, winning in 2018 and 2022.

Beaulieu appeared in five regular-season games for Laval last year, registering 14 tackles, one sack, one tackle for loss and two fumble recoveries. He was twice named the RSEQ Defensive Player of the Week last year and was also honoured as the RSEQ Special Teams Player of the Week in 2022.

Probably a bit of a longshot to make the team but undrafted Canadians have cracked the roster before. He would likely be a special teams player and start on the practice roster if he did make the team.

This isn't the same Beaulieu that's been in the CFL a couple/few years?  Darn those common last names.

Ok, so he's straight out of U?  Uh, doesn't he need to go through the draft?  Confused.

It's a good add from a puzzle-piece perspective as we had decent success with the one-Canadian-DB sets when we have NAT-Jones here a couple of years back.

This could better enable our Cheetah set, especially if we have no NAT DE.  KW was talking in the presser about getting another quality DE for cheetah.  I think he already has plans to work around any potential weakness at IMP DT; on passing downs, at least.  3 IMP DEs + GLOB Hansen, and you put your NAT at LB or DB.

Probably went undrafted.

We need another quality DE because Jefferson is at his best being kept fresh and Jeffcoat missed a lot of last season

Probably went undrafted.

But if won the Vanier in 2022, that would mean the only way he was "in the draft but undrafted" is if he was in the 2022 draft then went back to school for that extra year??

If that's the case, you gotta believe the WFC scouts have seen something in his play to scoop him up.  And without costing a DP, he's "free"!  Can't argue with that.
