Blue Bombers re-sign receiver/returner Janarion Grant

WINNIPEG, MB., February 3, 2023 - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has re-signed American receiver and kick returner Janarion Grant to a one-year contract extension. He was scheduled to become a free agent on February 14th.

Grant (5-9, 160, Rutgers; born: November 20, 1993, in Fort Trilby, FL) returns in 2023 for his fourth season with the club. In 2022, Grant led all CFL returners with five touchdowns - three in the regular season and two more in the playoffs - with four coming via punt returns and the fifth on a kickoff.

Grant earned a spot on the CFL All-Star team and became the Blue Bombers' all-time leader in kick return touchdowns in the regular season with seven. He also set a Grey Cup record with a 102 yard return touchdown in the championship loss to Toronto.

Grant initially joined the club in July of 2019 after first attending training camp with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Appearing in just 11 games, Grant led the Blue Bombers in both punt and kickoff returns that season.

Grant first turned pro in 2018, signing with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent. He made the team's final roster as the primary punt and kick returner but was released in late September of that season.

Good signing. Keep them coming Mr. Walters.

Now, if we could get him involved in the O a little more, that would be a bonus.

I have a feeling we might see this pending us announcing more receivers re-upping...

We need Demski back!!

We try every year.  But it doesn't pan out.  After watching the 2022 PS game again, it's obvious we really tried hard to fit him in the O more.  But he's just not a receiver.

However, if we lose Demski, Schoen, Ellingson... we'll have no choice but to field Grant every O snap!!

Anyone know the whisper $$ on this deal?  I wonder what league-best returner earns.

Love this signing!  Grant it a big piece of the puzzle.

JG is a real game breaker, another great signing. Get a few more  free agent receivers added to the mix for ZC and the offence will be looking better. Demski, being a local player is a good draw to bring the fans in and should be the next one up if the salary cap $ work out. If we still need to bring in more players before training camp I'm sure Danny M and our scouting team are up to the challenge. In 2022, with all the injuries, we had really good depth at most positions and that was key to having such a good winning record and locking up home field advantage in the playoffs.

Very excited to have him back....he's the best return specialist we've had for decades and he showed his worth in two of the biggest games of the season.....he is electrifying!
Bomber fan for life

He was (recently) second on my list after Demski. Gotta make it a priority to re-sign one of the best returners in your franchise?s history. MOS values STs.

Well done.

And Grant has really done a great job fixing his early-career fumbleitis.  I don't think he cost us any TO in 2022.  The ball maybe left his hands once that I can remember but it didn't matter as it was OOB.  This was not an easy thing to fix and kudos to Grant and all his coaches who dealt with his achilles heel.

There was at least one bad muff that ended up as a turnover inside our 5 yard line. Possibly one other IIRC. However, I can live with a couple of mistakes. It's the nature of the position at times.

I read on the other forum that Grant cost us a TD in the Grey Cup, but I really can't recall any flubs....and I'm not ready for another re-watch yet.

I'll take Grants ratio of turnovers to touchdowns and big plays any day

Hmm, I don't recall that from 2022.  But during my full-season rewatch I'll keep my eye out!!

Huh, wha?  I think the "other forum" is still drunk from that night.  I've rewatched it a couple of times already and I don't recall any Grant problem?  Maybe they were thinking the game a couple games earlier where I think he did flub one and then got a KRTD to make up for it later in the game (one of the playoffs?).  However, I'm think it was a catch -lub, not a fumble.  I was talking more his fumbles because that's what he's always had problems with.

Yes, Pete, even if he has a flub or 2 a season, he really does make up for it with the explosions.  And if he gets his flubs down to 0-1 or just 0, all the better.

It as more of a catch-flub than a fumble per se and I think it was against the Lions?

Other than a couple rare mistakes Grant's ball security is top notch.  His contincey is his strength, not to mention them wheels.
