ROOKIE CAMP PRIMER

FIVE TO WATCH

Topping our 'To Watch' list a year ago was receiver Dalton Schoen, who then went on to lead the Canadian Football League in receiving and being named the league's Most Outstanding Rookie. That's a high bar, but here are a handful of fresh faces to begin tracking now:

#90 DE Jadrian Taylor: The Blue Bombers could use some import depth behind Willie Jefferson and Jackson Jeffcoat and Taylor, who spent two years at UTEP, is one of the candidates to track during camp.

LB Barrington Wade: Has had NFL looks from Baltimore and Denver, has impressive testing numbers, and caught the eye of Bombers scout Cyril Penn last year at Broncos training camp.

WR Michael Young: Played his college ball at both Notre Dame and Cincinnati before NFL opportunities last year from Indianapolis and Houston. The Blue Bombers receiving corps is stacked, but that doesn't stop management from looking.

#49 LB Gee Stanley: An intriguing prospect in that he can play linebacker and could also get a look at the Dime spot. That versatility can be key in the CFL.

DE Aaron Sterling: Similar situation to Taylor, listed above.

POSITIONAL PREVIEW - QUARTERBACKS

The Returnees:
Zach Collaros, Dru Brown
CFL newcomers: Cooper Callis, Billy Hall, Josh Jones, Tyrrell Pigrome
CFL Canadian quarterback internship program: Arnaud Desjardins (Laval)
Departed: Dakota Prukop (USFL)

Keep an eye on: Dru Brown
The battle for the third-string/short-yardage package gig might be the most compelling in the here and now, but Brown's continued development for the Blue Bombers is critical long-term, even with Collaros signed through 2025. The club would love to have him transform from a No. 2 to a 1A and that will take real snaps in real action.

Did you know?
Collaros threw for 37 touchdowns and just 13 interceptions last year. His +24 touchdown-interception differential tied for the ninth-highest in CFL history - Montreal's Antony Calvillo was +30 in 2008 - and broke the club record of +23 set by Jack Jacobs in 1951.

Notable number: 57
Collaros has thrown for 57 touchdowns the past two seasons - 37 last year and 20 in the shortened 2021 campaign. That's the highest back-to-back total by a Blue Bombers pivot since Khari Jones threw for 71 scores in 2002-03 - a club record 46 in 2002 and 25 in 2003. Jones also had 30 passing TDs in 2001.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers release 12 players, sign Canadian OL Jakub Szott

The Winnipeg Blue made a number of roster moves ahead of the start of training camp later today.

The team signed four players, including Canadian offensive lineman Jakub Szott, American receiver Braxton Westfield, American defensive tackle Julius Turner and Global punter Jamieson Sheahan.

Szott was released by the Montreal Alouettes on May 11. The six-foot-five, 305-pound blocker was a fourth-round pick of the Ottawa Redblacks in the 2020 CFL Draft. He started 12 games as a rookie at left guard in 2021 before spending most of the 2022 season on the team's practice roster before being released last August.

The 24-year-old spent time on the Blue Bombers' practice roster last October before signing with the Alouettes later that month.

The team also released 12 players, including Canadian defensive back Noah Hallett, fellow Canadian defensive back Cedrick Lavigne, Canadian offensive lineman Tyler Grisolia, Canadian receiver Michael O'Shea, National punter Chris MacLean, American quarterback Cooper Callis, American running back TaZhawn Henry, American receiver Jaivon Hellish, American kicker Marc Orozco and American defensive backs Jordan Brown, Tyrique McGhee and Karon Delince.

Hallett was a second-round selection of the Bombers in the 2020 CFL Draft and played 11 games for the team over two seasons with the club. Hallett suffered a knee injury in November 2021 and missed almost 10 months. He played in two games a season ago.

O'Shea is the son of Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Mike O'Shea, The team signed the younger O'Shea last week after he went unselected in the 2023 CFL Draft.

The Bombers also transferred American defensive back Will Allen Jr. and American defensive tackle O'Bryan Goodson to the suspended list and added Global defensive end Thiadric Hansen and American linebacker Kyrie Wilson to the six-game injured list.

The 30-year-old Wilson suffered an Achilles injury last July.

TOP OF THE DEPTH CHART: WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS
May 15, 2023   DON LANDRY

I figure there are two reasons why the Winnipeg Blue Bombers re-signed so many of their veteran players this past off-season, players who could have become free agents.

One is that all those guys are quite obviously pretty good. The other is that they're all certainly PO'd by their Grey Cup loss to the Toronto Argonauts and very willing - eager, even - to do whatever is necessary to rinse the taste of that one from their mouths in 2023.

Talented, experienced veterans who know each other well and are motivated to get back to the place where they figure they rightfully belong. That's the Winnipeg story in a nutshell, one that plays out prominently in putting together a likely depth chart for their season-opener against Hamilton on June 9th.

OFFENCE
QUARTERBACK

Zach Collaros goes gunning for a third straight MOP award and I guess that might fuel him him a bit, considering the last guy to accomplish that feat was Doug Flutie. But I'd bet the bigger motivator for Collaros is getting back to another Grey Cup game, this time without a bum ankle.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Seems pretty straightforward on that offensive line with the incomparable Stanley Bryant at left tackle and Jermarcus Hardrick once again on the right side. The guards would be Geoff Gray and Patrick Neufeld and at centre - where the Bombers need to account for the loss of Michael Couture in free agency - you can put Chris Kolankowski at the top of the list, at least for now. Kolankowski subbed in for an injured Couture during the 2022 season, starting in 15 games for Winnipeg.

The Bombers have some young offensive linemen starting to press, too, like Liam Dobson.

RECEIVERS

Loaded. Looooooaaaaaded. The Blue Bombers bring back last year's Most Outstanding Rookie in Dalton Schoen, as they do Nic Demski and Drew Wolitarsky. The newcomer in the group? Hardly that at all. After he spent a season in Edmonton, the Bombers brought back Kenny Lawler to - you'd have to think - pick up exactly where he left off when he last played for Winnipeg in 2021, which was as a 1,000-yard man.

Now, please note that the format for these depth chart articles follow a certain form and that is to list four starting receivers and a fullback in the line-up. Fair enough, but you know the Bombers are going to use a five-receiver set a lot and so I'd be remiss in not saying that the splendid Rasheed Bailey - so talented in pass-catching and in blocking - would be listed as a starter had I been asked for a five-pack.

These are the five receivers at the top of the chart but Winnipeg has very good depth here, as well.

RUNNING BACK

Brady Oliveira burst through part way through the 2022 season when he decided just to be Brady, rather than trying to be Andrew Harris' replacement. And, boy oh boy, did that work like a charm. The talented Johnny Augustine will get lugs in, too, whenever Oliveira gets an in-game rest.

FULLBACK

Mike Miller
. That is all. Actually, no it's not. I'd love to see young special teams demon Konner Burtenshaw - the last man taken in the 2022 draft - get some time on offence as well. But Miller is the guy.

DEFENCE
DEFENSIVE LINE

Like the offensive line, Winnipeg has veteran stars to lead the way with Willie Jefferson and Jackson Jeffcoat on the outside and veteran National tackle Jake Thomas back to navigate the butcher's blades of the interior. Easy. It'd be super-easy had veteran Casey Sayles not left for Hamilton in free agency, but he did. That means there could be some question as to how the Bombers proceed, but since general manager Kyle Walters indicated during the off-season that the organization had faith in Ricky Walker to step up, the 27-year-old gets the top of the depth chart slot as he enters his third CFL season.

LINEBACKERS

Adam Bighill in the middle. I know. Shocker. At SAM, I love me some Alden Darby Jr., a guy who looked like a natural for the position immediately when he was first moved there a few years back by the Argos.

He's also so good in the secondary that if the Bombers want to call the position a DIME and consider it a defensive back spot, so be it. I mean, a rose by any other name would still be Darby. Unless it's Winston, I guess. But I'm kind of getting into the weeds here, aren't I? Point is: Call it a SAM, call it a DIME, Darby is in that spot. At weak side, Malik Clements did such an admirable job after Kyrie Wilson went down with an Achille's injury in 2022, and Wilson starts training camp on the six-game injured list.

DEFENSIVE BACKS

Veteran Brandon Alexander returned from a knee injury late last season to reclaim his spot as the starting free safety for Winnipeg. More veteran presence is found at one of the corner spots, where Winston Rose gets the start. On the other corner, Demerio Houston was cruising into a position of dominance when his season was cut short due to injury, last August. If he's back to being completely healthy, he gets the nod. If not, Desmond Lawrence, the former Ticat who joined Winnipeg late in the season and started in the Grey Cup, would be there. All-Star Deatrick Nichols is a given at one of the halfback spots and Jamal Parker, who played both corner and half during Winnipeg's injury-riddled season of secondary flux in 2022, gets pencilled in at the other halfback position, where he started in the 2022 Grey Cup Game.

SPECIAL TEAMS
KICKER

This one was gonna be a fun one, until the Edmonton Elks released Sergio Castillo and the Bombers phoned him, like, five seconds later to see if he wanted to come back to Winnipeg. So, Sergio it is.

PUNTER

Marc Liegghio averaged nearly 47 yards per, last season, and was fourth in kick-off yardage, so I can see him taking care of those duties for the Bombers.

LONG SNAPPER

Mike Benson goes into his 10th season in the CFL, third with Winnipeg.

RETURNER

Janarion Grant. Two punt return TDs during the regular season, another in the Western Final. And another one in the Grey Cup. Led the league in punt return yards in 2022. If the Bombers' defence would just give up some more touchdowns, we'd get to see him run back more kick-offs, too. Can you imagine?

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have added a pair of Americans to their training camp roster, signing receiver Brendan Beaulieu and running back Kevon Latulas.

Beaulieu played 47 games over four seasons at Bemidji State University, racking up 215 receptions for 3,725 yards and 38 touchdowns, while also rushing for another major, throwing for one, and adding seven special teams tackles. He graduated in 2022 as the school's all-time record holder in receptions, receiving yardage, receiving touchdowns, and 100-yard games with 17.

A second-team all-conference selection as a redshirt sophomore in 2019, the six-foot-three, 215-pound pass catcher broke out in 2021 following a missed season due to COVID. He caught 76 passes for 1,318 yards and 13 touchdowns, setting new single-season school records in receptions and receiving yardage. He broke both of those records again the following year and added the school's single-season scoring mark to his resume, catching 82 passes for 1,504 yards and a nation-leading 19 touchdowns.

After being named to the Associated Press Division II All-American second-team as a junior, the Cottage Grove, Minn. native took home first-team honours as a senior. However, Beaulieu went unselected in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Latulas played 25 games over three seasons at Missouri State University after first attending Kilgore Community College. He carried 144 times for 1,029 yards and six touchdowns while catching 39 passes for 458 yards and four more scores. Over the course of his college career, the six-foot, 200-pound back averaged 7.1 yards per carry.

In a corresponding move, the team also released American receivers Dominick Fiscelli and Michael Young Jr.

Fiscelli was originally signed on May 10 after catching 25 passes for 411 yards and three touchdowns at Northern State University this past season. Young has been on the roster since March 22 after a successful college career at Notre Dame and the University of Cincinnati.
