This is a great read on understanding how mental illness affects likely many people - perhaps people in our own circles of life.

Take time to read it, understand it and reach out to those you may know who experience this in real life.

Good topic to discuss, mental illness runs in my family and I have suffered from it in the past.  If anyone needs support, seek it out.  I can speak from experience if someone needs advice.  PM me.

I believe mental illness will affect everyone some time during their lifetime.  It's a matter of how we deal with it that determines our life paths.

Yes....it is more prevalent than ever and Covid only added to this malaise...my wife suffers from acute depression.    I had to seek counseling for myself in order to properly deal with this affliction.   We have come a long long way to recovery, however it's a constant battle to stay on top of it.   It requires commitment and patience to cope with it however it's better than the alternative.   Our medical systems are grossly inadequate in dealing with mental illnesses and too many people go untreated or ill treated.

Good points.

I think society has changed its view but has a long way to go.  The stigmatism is not as bad, it is recognized as a medical illness, and there is information and discussion.

That said and having helped someone with a serious condition I became aware about 5 years ago about how understaffed, underfunded and how weak a system we have.

Have a serious mental illness? Devastating? No problem go home and wait for an appointment. Months. You only get to stay in hospital when you are a major threat to harm another or yourself. Mildly suicidal? No problem go him and wait for an appointment.

That said the staff for the most part was great, but you could tell overworked and having to work within the system.  Also I understand psychiatrists and nurses have lefty due to the system.

We need to do more.

More people need to be aware.

I am learning. I must say my views have changed for the positive.

I?ve received tons of messages from ppl who also struggle and I hope we continue to break the stigma. Thanks for your thoughtful replies everyone. Hoping to get another piece up on 3Down this week! They're not much better here in BC either.....pathetic actually and grossly understaffed and underfunded!   The people who work in the system are doing their best however they are mostly overwhelmed
