Blue Bombers agree to terms with Global defensive lineman Thiadric Hansen

WINNIPEG, MB., June 18, 2022 - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announce today that the Club has agreed to terms with Global defensive lineman Thiadric Hansen on a two-year contract.

Hansen (6-2, 250, Potsdam Royals; born: December 26, 1992 in Flensburg, Germany) will join the Blue Bombers for his third season in the Canadian Football League. He suited up for every regular season game in 2019 and 2021 and was a key contributor on defence and special teams in the back-to-back Grey Cup championships.

Selected second overall in the CFL's 2019 European Draft, Hansen recorded eight defensive tackles and 12 special teams tackles in 14 games in 2021, registering three sacks and also forcing a fumble.

Hansen played with the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes from 2012-18 and was with the Potsdam Royals when selected by the Blue Bombers. Following the team?s 2019 Grey Cup championship, he signed with the Wroclaw Panthers, a Polish team in the Central European Football League, and helped lead them to a championship.

Excellent news. He'll eliminate the need / probability that we have to have 2 DE's as DI's on the game day roster.

This week we added the 2nd global to the game day roster. IMO that was more due to losing Briggs and Clements to the IR and needing some additional depth at LB. If Clements is healthy we might see him for our next game while shuffling one of the DE's ( Wilcots) to the PR?

Neither global player that has really made any visible impact. IIRC in 2 games they have 1 ST between them. Hansen can make an impact on ST's and on defensive rotation.

Welcome back.

I wonder if knowing he'll get a raise in 2023 helped see him returning?

Great news!  Justice is done, Hansen earned his spot on the team and deserves to be paid fairly for his efforts.  It's like throwing in a Berserker on the D-line, rarely can a single O-lineman handle him one-on-one.

Do we know whether the new CBA allows an increase in his salary above an ELC in 2022? I'm not opposed if the new CBA allows that but I'm not sure if it does this season.

Good news. Should free up an import/DI spot to be used somewhere else which is great.

Lol, I love your enthusiasm, but you might want to dial back a bit.  Hansen has a career total of 13 tackles as a defensive player.

Pretty sure it removed the permanent upper limit on GLB salaries...

It was supposed to be removed in 2023 but the last round of CBA talks might have changed that to 2022. As I mentioned at the time his advantage was his global status and exemption from the SMS. That may have changed as well.

He may not have great stats. but opportunities for sacks increase for his D-line mates when Thiadric is on the field.  Watch him, he puts 100% effort into every play and leaves havoc in his wake.

Hansen is good on the Cheetah set.  Even more important now with Kongbo gone.

I've found Mack to be pretty good (as depth), and I'm not sure we need Hansen right now, but if he fills up the "freebie" GLOB roster spot then what do we have to lose?  And having depth after Mack is a good thing.

So, do we cut one of our other GLOBs now to make space?  Is there a "GLOB PR"?

One of the highlights of that Grey Cup, taking out two players with one hit on special teams.

The PR was expanded by 2 from 10 to 12 in order to have space for Global development players. We had two but activated a 2nd one this week due to injuries at LB. I'm guessing Hansen could be activated for this week and we might drop our 2nd import DE ( Wilcots ) as depth. Hansen adds that extra rotation at DE and doesn't take up a DI spot.

That might allow a different player to be added, possibly even the import RB to give him a few reps if we struggle with the run game.

Have you acquired a copy of the playbook? lol  Cool 1st time I've heard that term used in reference to special teams, it fits.

It would be awesome to see McCrae get some touches. Now is a good time to find out if he could be the guy. With Alexander out, we've been playing with an extra national anyway. I bet he would fit into a Demski-like role very well!

Cheetah is when you put in 4 DE's for a dline, and you have nothing but fast pass rushing guys... hence "Cheetah" = fast.  Last year, with Kongbo, Hansen and the Jeff's, it was pretty effective...

Yeah I wouldn't be completely surprised if that was an option this week. OTOH it's a little early to put the shadow of doubt into our Canadian RB's heads.

First question is what is the status of our OL injuries and does that require a 3rd import OL for this week?

IMO if Hansen is back on the game day roster we may switch out one of the imports that played this week or possibly next week.

Realistically an import RB is going to be a difficult player to get onto the roster even as a DI. He might be a candidate if Grant gets nicked and if he is  good returner or possible receiver rotation player. We haven't seen enough of him to really know what he's capable of quite yet.

Thats our 4 DE set...and is very effective

Hansen is a big signing as he took regulkar roratuon, and isnt just a token global filling a sweater, when he is on the filed he has to be accounted for, and a lot of times takes 2 lineman to handle him....he freees up a lot of space, and if you go back and watch last year, when he is on field...things happen for the defense....also...he prob one of the best ST guys in the league

You need to watch the WPG games as many times as I do... they've said it so many times and it's caught on the parabolic mic, it's not even funny.  Usually Willie calling it to the DL.

Watch the '19 playoffs again, especially the GC.  Pay attention to the time when nothing's happening between plays.  You'll hear it!  Same with '21, but not as much.

I think I'm up to 50 rewatches on the '19 GC now.  For a while it was all I watched.  Then I memorized every play, so now it's not as much fun.  Yes, I'm weird.  Yes, I'll watch it again one day soon.

I have no doubt they still call that set "cheetah".  However, we haven't had any chance (nor players?) to play it yet this season.  Maybe with Hansen back we can start doing it, but who's the 4th?  Mack?  Mack's a nice size to play DT (too) but not sure he's fast.  We'll need to field NAT at FS to make the ratio still work with all-IMP/GLOB DL x4 (because sans Kongbo).
