Wow. My thoughts on who should be back-up do not include short yardage at all.

In watching the game a few time dl moved before snap but didn't cross the line...is this automatically a whistle for offside?

My understanding: If a D player in the 1-yard neutral zone when the ball is snapped the play continues, likely with an offside penalty against the D. If someone on the O-line moves while the D player is in the neutral zone and the ball hasn't been snapped the play is blown dead, offside against the D. If the D player goes in the neutral zone but gets back onside before the ball is snapped and no one on O moves, play continues.

Once the DL moves before the ball is snapped, an OL will automatically break his stance which will cause the official to blow the play dead and assess an offside call against the D. When I played, the defenders could move early but if they got back before the ball was snapped it was fine and during that if an OL broke his stance they would call the offensive team with Illegal procedure. Seems times have changed.

Helmets come off all the time and it's not always RP. Centrifugal force, hitting the ground, defensive player landing on top and body surfing over him as they hit the ground?
Didn't think it was any version of an illegal hit. Dangerous situation sure but it's a rough sport.
OK, just watched it again, and their 79 grabbed the helmet as Prokop was being tackled by their 96 and as they roll backwards together, he literally rips the helmet off Prokup's head. No doubt its a facemask at least, unnecessary roughness 25 yard IMHO. Prokup was lucky to not get injured

That's the optimistic view, I think Zach is due to miss a few games this year due to injury, that's why I want Brown, if he can take over and win 50% of games that's good. Almost any QB can do short-yardage, McGuire wasn't especially talented but he did fine, until he had to start. Brown has demonstrated the aptitude to improve himself drastically in just one year, Prukop has had 4 years in the CFL and it looks like he's behind in development, stick with Brown and he may someday become a starter.

On another note given how well Malik Clements has been playing I wonder if he could handle sam lb, hes very athletic with decent speed and was our best defensive player in the 2 preseason games..to me hes earned a spot on the roster

I'm not talking about if Zach goes down. In that case, I'd rather have Brown as the starter. I'm talking about game to game when Zach is healthy. Prukop is a pure runner, is bigger, and can get the half yard or so by himself when needed.

Interesting question. The Bombers know they need a new SAM due to injury situation. We also know have have the best MLB in the CFL. Based on Clements playing LB and not a SAM in coverage, I'd say that wasn't an option or any part of the plan. Hard to agree he's earned a spot on the roster when the spots at MLB and WIL are taken by veterans. If it wasn't for the ratio he could beat out one of the Canadian LB's but it will be difficult to get him on the AR. Not impossible but difficult. That said, I'm not sure we're happy with the candidates at SAM. Part of that was the musical chairs during pre season. Rutledge seems to be the front runner?

No, in all cases in this game the OL moved while the DL was in the neutral zone. They are all super-trained up on doing that, and they did a great job that night. You can check it out in slow-mo to confirm.

The only reason the play would be whistled dead is if the D line breaks the plane on the LOS, play is a automatically dead even if O doesn?t move.

Ironically, MOS mentions the DL jumping thing in the coach show: https://globalnews.ca/pages/audio-vault-cjob/June 1, 7pm, about 7min in He says he doesn't like it how it is nowadays. Says DL should be allowed to get back in place before the snap. Meh, he's right that it feels a bit silly what happens now where OL gets up and everyone points and yells. But then again, its cool when the QB playing with his cadence can fool the D and gain a free 5. Not sure what MOS is expecting will change with this anytime soon...
