Non Import DBs

We've seemed to have focused on DBs in the past few drafts and now have a bigger collection of them probably in as long as I've been a BB fan (almost 40 years!)
Hallet, Hallet, Rene, Kramdi, Ford, Thompson, Ciguineau and Lavigine

I think we had the older Hallet dressed most games, and Kramdi/younger Hallet PRd.  Will we be able to find room for Rene/Ford and co?
If a guy like Ford goes on the PR, would another team steal him?

Noah Hallett played 9 games and Kramdi played 7 games on ST's. IIRC, both had some injuries shortening their 1st season.  I think both showed some promise.

I expect Ford and Rene to make the AR roster in 2022. That makes it interesting for Thompson, Ciguineau and Lavigine.

The last two drafted might have another year of college? I'm not sure about them exactly. I don't think we can or will keep everybody.

That opens one spot for either Rene and Ford. One of them will be in PR or hidden on IR. The rest on PR or cut.

Rene might have an edge on training and experience against heavier competition (in college). He has disadvantage though on having to learn CFL field and style of game.

Ford might have faced a lighter competition (in college) compared to Rene but he has played on CFL-sized field and (maybe) more familiar with CFL style game. But what I think might give him the edge over Rene will be his involvement in ST.

Kramdi at times was listed at SAM. Rene has the size too also go there as well. Ford could eliminate the need for a DI DB. As for the late round picks and Thompson, I think one or two make the PR and the other gets cut

The 2021 depth charts aren't listed anymore. IIRC Kramdi might have been listed at SAM and Safety a few times. However where they list back ups is not always relative, even for an in game injury.

We have 17 import DB's on the roster, 10 rookies. 6 of them are between 23 and 25 so very young and inexperienced. 3 are 6'1 or above and over 200 lbs. Generally a wide variety of players that could be SAM, CB or DHB candidates.

Additionally I think we've got 9 Canadian DB's.


IMO I think 5 or 6 get released shortly after mini camp or very early in TC.

Where any of them are ranked or where the coaches feel they are best suited to play is something we'll have to watch.

Whether we choose to not have a DB as a DI could happen. Depends on how well some of the Canadians show. OTOH, it could depend on how well an import shows.

Roster has 82 or 83 non counters at the moment and that needs to be trimmed down to 75 in 11 days.  Orders have been placed for apples and road maps.

This year's changes in hash marks are going to change the LB positions... WILL is going to be more a SAM type player... and the difference between a field corner/half and a short side corner/half is almost gone.  Does that change the FS spot too?  Do FS's need to be more cover guys than "Bring the hammer" downhill guys? 

I think we are going to need a good balance back there, INTs and NATs... and I think the brain trust has identified that and done a good job...

Who knows, we might see Ford at FA, Alexander at SAM, Maston in at WIL, Wilson as an end rusher on passing downs...

We only have 1 extra import LB on the current roster. I wonder if that falls into the shift towards DB's that could be a SAM cover guy player? As I mentioned we have an enormous number of DB's which is higher than in previous TC's and the exact opposite in regard to number of extra LB's.

At least as far as import players. We do have a number of Canadians that are LB types and could see a lot of work on ST's.

I mostly agree with those 3 being ahead based on experience, especially with a short period before ciuts need to be made. But Rene & Ford were higher picks, you'd have to think the club wants to keep them. I'm guessing Thompson was signed as insurance before going into the draft, but maybe now is expendable. Ciguineau known for special teams.....we love special teams.....

With this focus the past few drafts, you'd have to think the end game is to start a minimum of 1 Canuck in the secondary.

I think Ford is a shoe in for an AR spot, especially if Alexander misses time.  Rene probably too, much as the Halletts and Kramdi worked well last year, they are not the same level athletically.  I think Ford and Rene are more likely to crack the starting lineup. 

As to previous experience, this is going to be a new D, with the hash marks changing, the forgotten wide side is now going to be in play.  No hiding DB's ad Rec's out there.  Which changes the dynamic all over the field..
