Blue Bombers add two to roster - May 1, 2022

WINNIPEG, MB., May 1, 2022 - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has signed American offensive lineman Pat Allen and 2021 Global Draft selection offensive lineman Tomoya Machino.

Allen (6-4, 290, Southeastern Louisiana; February 6, 1996 in Reisterstown, MD) joins the Blue Bombers after playing two seasons for the Southeastern Louisiana Lions. Allen appeared in 24 games for the Lions anchoring the offensive line during his time there.

Machino
(6-5, 298, Kyoto University, March 16, 1997 in Ogaki, Gifu Prefecture, Japan) returns to the team after spending the 2021 season on the practice roster. Machino was selected in the 2nd round, 15th overall of the 2021 Canadian Football League Global Draft. He played baseball in high school before taking up football at college ? Kyoto University ? and stood out at the Global Combine in Japan. He played for Japan at the World University Championships in Harbin, China in 2018.

I can see Machino being our Global roster player with Hansen not returning (unless the new CBA allows for his return at a proper salary)... nice to have extra Oline depth...

I don't see that at all unless we opt to field 2 global players. I fully expect Mauro to be the 1st Global player. He'll play ST's and might actually work into some defensive reps.  An import or Global OL will sit on the bench unless there is an in game injury. We've signed about 6 import OL + Machino. PR players until we have an injury.

Not an effective use for an OL.

Mauro played 7 games and had 6 ST tackles. He's supposed to be a very physical wrecking ball and that's valuable.

I thought we were supposed to roster 2 GLB this year...

Somebody posted roster breakdown info showing " minimum " 2 Global players. That didn't seem right in the sense of more than two. In 2021 a 2nd Global was optional to replace a Canadian on the roster. For most of the season the Bombers only added the 2nd Global when injuries made it necessary due to shortage of Canadians on the PR.

There isn't a new CBA yet and whether they are thinking two Globals is the new mandate is not written in stone IIRC.

As I mentioned if Globals are still SMS exempt than there is a financial advantage to do that instead of a Canadian on an ELC.

Either way I don't see an OL as a preference choice on the active. OTOH there are only 3 rounds in this year's draft and we won't have many choices. We'll see what GLB's are drafted and at what positon on Tuesday.
