Hand-washing and proper hygiene practices are typically better protective measures against viruses than donning a cloth/paper/surgical mask that isn't or can't be properly fit-tested. Combining them can be even more effective, especially during a pandemic.

The ignorance of some people on this planet is truly astounding. Goes well with the whiny, irrational comments about 1984 and whatnot.

Yes, I'm wondering why so many people are ignorant of the fact that "our" governments were spending our money in 2020 to advertise that the wearing of masks served only to give us a false sense of security. You though have merely chosen to refer to unspecified people as "ignorant" instead of addressing my point.

Goes well with the whiny, irrational comments about 1984 and whatnot.

Speaking of whiny and irrational, where's your evidence for this comment?

I can't see 2023 being any better than the previous years since this all began.

2023 has been better.

I'm concerned with what's taking place in China now that the country's Zero COVID Policy has been lifted.

I'm even more concerned about another lab leak from one of China's gain-of-function bacteriological research laboratories (evidently partially funded by the U.S. government).

I'm also concerned about the Chinese government's Zero tolerance for dissent of any sort. Your cavalier dismissal of the warnings in George Orwell's 1984 may explain why you're not equally concerned.

Let's stay away from speculative theories and political commentary about COVID. Thanks.

Staying away from condescending remarks toward other posters would be another good idea.

Perpetuating this latest diversion/discussion is also something to stay away from.  Enough already.  COVID is a valid concern and discussion.  Let's not contaminate it with unscientific/unsubstantiated speculation.

What on earth? "Enough already" to what? May I remind you that the job of a Mod is to be moderate and not inflammatory?

Meanwhile I'm now confused. On the one hand you say that "COVID is a valid concern and discussion" even though many think it's tiresome by now. But you also say that "perpetuating this latest diversion/discussion is also something to stay away from". So which is it?

Let's not contaminate it with unscientific/unsubstantiated speculation.

Huh? Which is the unscientific speculation? Who's done any here?

 Huh

You are welcome to have your opinion about moderating but the fact is that COVID exists and we want to discuss it with as much accuracy as possible and in a respectful manner. Without being the free speech police here, we try to maintain that here.

https://www.buffalo.edu/news/releases/2023/04/015.html

Quote
BUFFALO, N.Y. - A study led by University at Buffalo researchers has confirmed that contrary to claims by anti-vaccine proponents, COVID-19 vaccines pose only trivial risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), or blood clots. In addition, the study found that becoming infected with COVID-19 poses a significant risk of blood clots.

The study was launched in order to investigate whether or not receiving a COVID-19 vaccine put one at higher risk for developing VTE, a claim that had circulated widely on social media and in mainstream media.

The study period ran from Jan. 1, 2020 (just prior to the detection in the U.S. of COVID-19) until March 6, 2022, and was based on data from veterans aged 45 years and older from the Department of Veterans Affairs National Surveillance Tool. The data included 855,686 people who had received at least one dose of a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine and an unvaccinated control group of 321,676 people.

The study found that vaccinated individuals had a VTE rate of 1.3755 per 1,000 people, which is 0.1% over the baseline VTE rate of 1.3741 per 1,000 in unvaccinated people.

"Given the fact that the rate of VTE with COVID-19 is several orders of magnitude greater than the trivial risk from vaccination, our study reinforces the safety and importance of staying current with COVID 19 vaccinations."
