Not saying this is something they need to do but the point is the CFL needs to find innovative ways to reduce costs, continuing on as they have in the past "just because we do it that way" is not economically sustainable.   There were more empty seats than full in CFL stadiums this season for the first time ever, even if tickets were sold for many of those empty seats, the economic loss from fans not bothering to attend must be staggering.

Covid reduced fans in the stadiums. Want to do something? Reduce or eliminate the ratio and let the players that win their roster spots do that on talent not passport. Obviously every team works with the same SMS but Canadian top players ( supply / demand ) creates artificial cost for those 7 players. Top imports are a larger pool and would be even a larger contingent on rosters if not for the ratio.

Some portion of fans hesitate to reduce the ratio but it has been reduced over the decades. New CBA next year and we'll see if there are any adjustments.

Guess what.  If you didn't pay a Nat a premium for being a ratio buster, you'd probably be paying the exact same wage to an Int.  And getting a consistent supply of Int's to play at league min or PR money as backups might prove a little more difficult than maintaining Nat's.  Much as you bemoan Cauchy Muamba getting a paycheck and Naaman Roosevelt not getting one, a budget is a budget, and spending on players will be at the GM's discretion as to where to best put those $.  7 players on each team will get more for being Nat starters, for sure.  But the gap between a Nat starter and an Int has been dropping.  And Nat backups, well, most ELC's are not at a premium, and a good chunk of veteran backup/specials are at league min.  Same $ you'd have to pay an Int.

Until you adopt a flat pay scheme like the Arena league, there is always going to be a debate on who is getting too much or too little, and which GM is doing the best job of getting the most talent for the least $.  SMS creates a level playing field, and if a GM decides he wants to overpay his QB, or give an Nat MLB a world tour and a premium paycheck, then they have to economize elsewhere.

I really think the CFL has it dialed in pretty good.  Would doubling the SMS mean attracting more talent?  Maybe, especially if the min salary got bumped.  But would that mean that the game would improve dramatically?  I'm not convinced of that.  And you would definitely lose a LOT of the flavour this league's fans love.

You could reduce the cap, and maintain the talent level.  I'd hate to drop the min wage, but you very easily could.  This year, we've seen that you can have top QB talent without paying them $750k per year.  The highest paid QB's really aren't earning it.  You could keep most of the talent if you put in a $300k max contract.

CBA is coming, and the players are going to get kicked in the teeth by the current market, for sure.  I can see a work stoppage, but unfortunately it won't do the players any good.  Can't squeeze blood from a rock, and the teams are squozen pretty hard right now...

We have 7 players that went to the 1 game IR and Harris on the 6 game IR. Only 5 PR players have been moved out so there may be more to moved out. Kevin Brown is the only one on the 1 game IR that might stay there.

Specifically looking at these initial transactions it seems safe to suggest Nichols, Adams, Grant are back. Oyelola moving to PR suggests a Canadian coming back ( Briggs, Oliveria, Harris ) rather than adding another Global to active.

I'd expect D. Brown, Kolankowski, Lowes, Antigua and O'Leary-Orange as players that possibly will be moved to PR for others coming back.

Why they do this piecemeal of removing some but not all and don't add when some are removed is always a puzzle.

As an example: Did O'Leary-Orange see the field last week on either offence of ST's. If he played ST's did he play cover team, return team or both? A player on ST's doesn't necessarily record stats if he's a blocker or wedge breaker.

Completely disagree. We carry many Canadian back ups on ELC's that could be replaced by better imports for the same money. If we didn't have the ratio more imports would become starters at lower salaries than the premium Canadians. Obviously premium players will get more but the overall SMS would be flattened out as imports beat out Canadians from top to bottom.

Uhhhh maybe, but most of the lower paid Natl. guys are playing ST, they come back year after year just for the opportunity to play pro football, and some become very good at it and become fan favourites, like Mike Miller.  How many Imports are going to do this for 3-5-10 years?  As soon as they stop progressing toward a starting job they move on to a brighter opportunity, only to be replaced with another temporary no-name Import.  Team identity is super important, all of those recognizable faces standing on the sidelines represent identity, fans recognize them, gradually learn more about them and choose to like them.  When there is excessive turnover in personal fans stop talking or caring about names and faces they don't recognize and start referring to them by number, because they don't have the opportunity to identify with the player.

Teams are able to replace many DI's every off season. No reason they couldn't do the same for ST's if the player doesn't progress to a DI and then a starter. Most fans probably can't name the players on ST's beyond guys like Miller.

With the way players are shuffled on and off the PR or IR week to week it's very difficult to keep up with who is on roster, let alone ST's. I re-watch every game at least once and aside from whoever makes the tackle or great block, I find it difficult to determine who is on the field.

For that matter same on offence or defence players are rotated in and out. At least we get the game depth chart and have an idea of who might be the alternates. Not so much for ST's as PR players come and go to fill for other ST'ers injured for a game.

Team identity is important but with so many 1 year contracts, not much can be done short of changes to CBA.

Yup...  and it just makes sense from every aspect of it.

NHL/NBA had special terms for resigning free agents, longer max term and salary...

CFL can do similar, by allowing non-SMS bonuses to be paid players on low level deals, and other such incentives

This is a bit of propaganda by the PA in an attempt to get guaranteed contracts.

Not that I disagree with it, but they're not searching for anything but $$$ here.

Doesn't mean much. There are 7 players on the 1 game showing on the roster not including Harris. We should see the players being added today from the IR list.  Even the players removed from the active roster by transactions still show on the active roster.

Transactions versus the actual roster is never updated correctly in real time.
