Question... do Global players count towards ratio in any other way than filling the Global spot on the AR? Sure would be nice if they counted as a Nat (seeing as we have probably the only Global player who might be even a rotational starter...)

They do not count as a NAT in roster composition but they do for in game ratio. The CFL rule does not read that you must have X number of NATs in your starting lineup it says you can only have X number of IMPs.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens with Global players in 2020. No indication yet that we're bringing back either of the 2 PR players. That might happen or we might sign one that was on another team's PR last year. Hopefully there are more players to consider in the Global draft. Hard to know what we might even be looking for until we resolve our own free agency issues. We saw that not many got much real playing time across the league. Hansen seemed to be the one that stood out but he was the # 2 pick? We have 2 roster a 2nd one in 2020. Perhaps we draft some specialists to develop. IE: Punter, Kicker, QB ( lol ) for injury depth. Does A. Calvillo have a cousin that plays QB? that we can list as a receiver.

I thought somebody said they couldn't replace a NAT but you made an interesting point. Since the ratio is really intended to keep Canadians as starters ( 7 ), I wouldn't think we'd want to see 2 globals eventually being able to do that? Regardless. Most Globals weren't good enough to do much of anything last year. Maybe this year with more time spent on research of global players. At this point I'll be happy if our 2nd global can contribute and not just be a forced place holder. As I suggested in my other post, I'll be curious to see how many of the 2019 globals return across the league. 1 AR + 2 PR per team = 27 players. Not sure how many are currently on CFL rosters still.

I just looked it up. A global CANNOT replace a NAT. It was originally proposed to be part of the new CBA and was accepted by the union but was one of the provisions struck down when the players took the CBA back to the CFL because some of the language was not as they agreed and players refused to ratify it. Sorry, my bad....

No problem. Last year I suggested having a specialist to develop on the PR that could potentially replace a DI would be a benefit. To some degree Hansen along with Kongbo made Roh expendable in that role. Going into TC I thought / hoped the kicker would be a candidate for the PR in case of injury to Medlock. I still think that's one way to look at the PR choices. The added benefit besides development is an overall ratio benefit in that you'd benefit with DI choices in the ratio. Of course you need to find a global good enough to be a good LB, DB, OL or RB for example that is better that an import as a DI.

I would not mind sacrificing one or two DI spots in favor of Global spots, as the overall talent inches up. I have always thought 4 DIs were too much, so this could be a way to maintain roster flexibility and still bring along that international agenda. Panzer Boy has convinced me.

Do you have link for this info? That's the way I thought it worked, but couldn't find a link in the 1 minute I took googling.

That's a giant leap forward at this point. Hansen played well but Roh was a better player. Interesting position in thinking 4 DI's is too many. Ours were Medlock, Grant, K. Jones and Richardson. Go ahead and pick two to release and replace with your choice of Canadians or Globals? You're entitled to your opinion but do you really think that's a good idea on any CFL team.

I remember when the only DI was the back-up QB. the game was plenty entertaining back then. I think the league can get by on Canadian (or maybe Global) kickers. Much as I like Medlock, there are enough competent Canadian kickers around. Having the extra import LB, DB or DE is nice but not really necessary. With the extra DI spots, Canadian DEs have become a rare commodity, but I think we could raise the bar there. I think the one area where I do like the DI spot is in the return game. I was a big Paul Bennett fan, but I have to admit Janarion Grant is more exciting. To be clear, I am not suggesting unilateral disarmament on the part of the Bombers. If all the teams made the move, I think the product and the league would be just fine.

The roster then had 15 imports and 17 Canadians. The 2nd QB was not a DI. Generally he was a full time starter elsewhere on the roster. Dick Thornton was a DB while being a back up QB for example. The 15 imports often played both ways most of the game and only 10 Canadians started full time. The level of professional players and pay scale was closer to beer money for many players. I've been a fan of the CFL since 1957 and don't really dispute the games then were equally entertaining but in a different way than today. Today's players train all year, their coaching is better and they play at a higher speed, at a higher level on artificial turf. I understand you aren't suggesting only the Bombers to do this. IMO the game would suffer immensely. Many teams suffer trying to find and start 7 good Canadians. Eliminating the import depth would be the end IMO. I suppose the ratio advocates would be fine with this idea in principle but I really wonder if that would be true?

Roh won't be overly pricey, he was a late signee last free-agency after most of dust settled, so if we lose Willie, I can see us bringing him back at a slight increase, and hopefully McCallister to rotate in if he still available or willing to come back
Yeah, the Rohs seemed to have found a home here with Craig's wife finding a job and being best friends with the Bighills. I'm sure Craig would prefer to play here but maybe he would want to go somewhere where he has a better chance to start.

Not sure if starting is as much a concern as paycheck... all things being even close to equal, I'm thinking he stays, even at a lower contract... even league min is $70k, for 6 months work... that's like making $35/hr for the year, or $70/hour for the season... nothing to sneeze at in a 2 income family in Winnipeg...

The thing with Medlock is his versatility and overall competence as a FG kicker, punter and KO specialist. Medlock is to kicking as Van Gogh is to painting....he's really a kicking artist. I mean he made the top 10 highlight reel as a punter with that hustle and heads up play he made to direct the ball out of bounds resulting in a TD producing turnover at a key point in the game. Also he's a master at placing the ball when he punts and he made 21 of our 33 points in the GC game. He's worth the money we pay him as an American player. I'm hoping we re-sign him!!
