Longtime Sportsnet broadcaster Scott Oake receives Order of Canada

It is an extra special Canada Day for Sportsnet's Scott Oake.

The longtime broadcaster received the Order of Canada, which highlights those who have made lasting impacts on their communities, from Gov. Gen. Mary Simon during a ceremony on Tuesday.


"Members of the Order of Canada are builders of hope for a better future. Each in their own way, they broaden the realm of possibilities and inspire others to continue pushing its boundaries," Simon said in a statement.

Oake, who was born in Sydney, N.S., has appeared on national hockey broadcasts since 1989, when he was hired by Hockey Night in Canada. He currently serves as host of Sportsnet's After Hours on Saturday nights.

Outside of the rink, Oake co-founded the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre in Winnipeg, which serves as an addiction treatment facility in honour of his late son Bruce, who passed away of a heroin overdose at age 25.

Other appointees to the Order of Canada included actor and Wrexham AFC owner Ryan Reynolds, football player-turned-doctor Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and curling superstar Kevin Martin.

What a legend. Congrats, Mr. Oake!

That's what I said, $15+ mil, worth every dime...as for Marner....where was he again when the chips were down, yelling and screaming at his bench to wake up, wow, maybe look in the mirror big boy, you sucked big time in the playoffs and were a total, total bust. McDavid on the other hand, carried his team on his back and without him , they don't even contend in the playoffs...that's $2.5 mil very well spent!!

Former Jets Captain Blake Wheeler announces retirement

Wheeler's career spanned 1,172 regular-season games. He finished with 321 goals and 943 points.

Wheeler ends his career as the Jets' all-time leader in assists (550) and points (897), and ranks second in goals behind Ilya Kovalchuk.

Just saw an ESPN "Top free agents left" list, with Jack Roslovic at the top...  not a lot left out there.

The "wildcard" was Evgeny Kuznetsov, who's agent said "that they're not looking to be picky on team and finances".  Who is going to take a flyer on this perennial bad choice?  Would his talent outweigh his baggage at the right price?
