No question. This season, though... Not so much.

Blue In BC

While it's true we were less successful scoring points, we did move the ball and keep the opponents off the field.

In many games we won TOP and field position etc. It is a 2 way street since when our defence got the opponent off the field, our offence kept the ball.

Is that a function of us having a good O?  Or a function of the MOS/Buck game-control clock-control focused O?  We are almost always trying to shorten a game and win TOP.

Ya, "everyone wants to win TOP", but not every team makes that their main focus.  Most teams focus on scoring.

It's part of the reason our games tend to be "boring", until the 3 min warning at least.

I'm not sure why Mafia have had this change of heart, but it started dominating our plan maybe in 2022.  And it seems to be working(ish), so I'm not complaining (much).  My only desire would be that we had the ability to play 100% the opposite way (like VAJ's good days in BC) when we need to.  We could take the opponent completely off-balance if we come out with a BC game plan in the GC and I don't think they'd be able to recover (if we pulled it off!).

We have been fighting injuries to key players all year.  You don't address that. It has had a significant bearing on who we are and what we've accomplished and despite all that we have found a way to complete the season in 1st place in the west!

We are not going to be BC or any other team you want to compare us with.  No disrespect, but I don't believe anyone in the Bomber organization (right now) would want to compare us or how we compete, with anyone else in the league. Personally, while we are no perfect, I will take our coaching, management and healthy player roster over any other team in the league.

I did.  I said we were starting down this clock-control shortened-game approach around 2022.  By 2023 we were all-in on the strategy.  This year it's basically all we have.

Yes, injuries may be amplifying that this year, but I think it's the basis of our core strategy regardless of health status.

And I'm not dissing it.  Clearly the braintrust has give it great thought and decided this is our best path.  And it has worked so far, so who am I to judge?  But it's not without its annoying downsides.

(The funny thing is, a few teams have followed us down this path in some ways, though not to the same degree: MTL & SSK come to mind.)

An my point is that with a healthy, for example, Schoen, Bighill, Wolitarsky, Bighill, K. Wilson, Streveler, Neufeld (in part) in the line up, we would have a more "Bomber-like" offence and defence, yet, in spite of all that, we managed to find a way to first place.

You very well could be right!  And not just injuries, but general lower-tier talent levels as the "dynasty" years went on and we lost more and more good guys to FA $ bails, and as we tie up more $ on retention of the elite.

That actually might explain the strategy shift.  I wonder if Mafia figured this out on their own or they got to chat with Buono or Huff to get hints on how to handle the "we're the top, how do we stay that way" problem.

I found this one interesting.

Highest percentage of FG attempts from 40+ range (since 2000)

Rene Paredes with the 3rd highest percentage in the past 25 years and a 92.0% success rate on those FGs

Quote from: peg_city on October 28, 2024, 05:34:30 PMZach Collaros has the worst QB rating among all the 9 starters this year. Just noticed that.

We really need to put some money into our offensive line next year.
I was going to post a note of caution that the efficiency rating formula used by the CFL is wrong. Before posting I decided to confirm and much to my surprise the formula used on cfl.ca is correct for the first time in nearly 20 years - this is the Genius influence.

Before calling for Sheahan's head yet again this FA, people should study the "opposition side" punt-singles and pinned %1-20.  He killed the pins and no-singles stat miles better than every other punter.

Methinks Sheahan's gonna be a Bomber again next year... (well, assuming the new commish keeps the GLOB program in place.)
