Top receiver Justin Hardy out for Redblacks vs. Alouettes
By 3Down Staff -October 13, 2024

The Ottawa Redblacks will be without their best offensive playmaker when they fact off against the Montreal Alouettes on Thanksgiving Day.

Receiver Justin Hardy has been ruled out for the contest due to an ankle injury. The 32-year-old former NFLer entered this week second in the CFL in receiving yardage, having caught 90 passes for 1,241 yards and four touchdowns. Since joining the Redblacks in 2022, he has appeared in 40 games and racked up 219 receptions for 2,666 yards and seven majors, earning East Division all-star honours in 2023.

Hardy will be replaced by rookie Andre Miller, who has caught 10 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns in four games this year. Veteran backup Jeremiah Masoli will get his third start of the season under centre, with franchise quarterback Dru Brown still nursing an ankle injury.

Defensively, the Redblacks will get two impactful defensive starters back in action with the returns of cornerback Brandin Dandridge and weak-side linebacker Frankie Griffin. Dandridge has notched 19 tackles and two interceptions in just six games this year, while Griffin has made 51 defensive tackles in 10 appearances. National safety Yani Gouadfel and American corner C.J. Coldon have been demoted to the practice roster to make room.

The Ottawa Redblacks (8-6-1) will visit the Montreal Alouettes (11-3-1) on Monday, October 14 at 1:00 p.m. EDT.

Alouettes to start QB Davis Alexander on Thanksgiving Day
By 3Down Staff -October 13, 2024

The Montreal Alouettes will roll with backup quarterback Davis Alexander for their Thanksgiving Day matchup with the Ottawa Redblacks.

Starting quarterback Cody Fajardo will be a healthy scratch after missing every practice this week following the birth of his second son. With the top seed in the East already locked up and nothing to play for, the Alouettes are affording him additional family time and activating James Morgan as their third-string QB.

Alexander has made three starts already this season, going 3-0 while also leading one come-from-behind victory off the bench. The third-year pro has completed 73-of-102 passes for 972 yards, six touchdowns, and one interception while rushing 11 times for 89 yards and a score

Aiding the young pivot will be the return of star receiver Austin Mack, who played just one game with the team following his much-anticipated return from the NFL before suffering an ankle injury in practice. In his first year with the Alouettes, the 26-year-old recorded 78 receptions for 1,154 yards and four touchdowns while leading the team to a Grey Cup victory. American receiver Reggie White Jr. will be a healthy scratch to make room.

Defensively, the team will be without elite defensive tackle Mustafa Johnson (knee), who has made 35 tackles and six sacks in 15 games this year. Rookie Antonio Moultrie kicks inside to defensive tackle, while Jordan Domineck will get the start at defensive end. Veteran cornerback Nafees Lyon (knee) will also be absent with Lorenzo Burns getting the start on the boundary side. Najee Murray will be back in the lineup for the first time since Week 9 and will take over at strong-side linebacker, bumping Bryce Cosby into a depth role.

Rounding out the roster moves, Canadian receiver Regis Cibasu returns from injury and Theo Grant will dress as a seventh offensive lineman. Canadian linebacker Frederic Chagnon (knee) will be out this week.

The Montreal Alouettes (11-3-1) will host the Ottawa Redblacks (8-6-1) on Monday, October 14 at 1:00 p.m. EDT.

Wow, the end-of-first-Q non-DPI review was insane!  That's the first review I would have guaranteed command overturns.  That's DPI all day long.  The jersey pull is clearly obvious at full speed, no need for slowmo, and it directly stops the REC from getting to the ball.

I'm flabbergasted.  This basically means never challenge uncalled DPI again.  It was already 90% upheld, with this precedent the level of egregiousness is so extreme you'd be nuts to ever try.

The league has taken this "clear and obvious" way too far.

P.S. Money Hunter clearly is the new up & coming "dirty" player.  Many games this year he's taking liberties (and penalties), and causing injuries.

I didn't watch the game but the command centre went too far one way and then over reacted and went too far the other way.  They need to get the balance right which is hard and be consistent.  This season has been very disappointing in this regard and bring little credibility to the league and really impacts the players as they have no idea what will be called or overturned.

Money Hunter and a slew of other RB's took extremely dumb penalties, a lot of them retaliation after the whistle (12-122 yds).  It's past the point this is a coincidence, time to move on from Bob Dyce if he can't command more discipline from his team.  Fighting for a home playoff game and this is the level of accountability they show their teammates? O'Shea would go full Dinwiddie.

The red blacks plYers obviously rule the clubhouse. Bob Dylan's e is just a good ole boy along for the ride, the players don't respect him or staying disciplined in such an important game. Ottawa obviously has a lower standard for such behaviour and that's why they ll never amount to anything

Haha, 4Q6:18 on a FG try by MTL, an OTT DL guy says "boo" and makes a MTL OL move.  Refs didn't see it, or didn't care.

I point this out because while normal IP could have been called for the movement, what this really was was the uber-rare IP-defence (as found on the Andre Proulx Shake It Off song).  And it would have given MTL a 1st down in the redzone.

The OTT players on the edge were doing the ol' "didn't you see that refs?" routine.

P.S. 4Q5:11 I just love the one hand forward / one hand back double-hand off Masoli does to crossing players in front and behind.  MTL has to guess which one has the ball.  The guy who doesn't have it runs backwards as if to throw, clearing the flat.  The play didn't work as MTL WILL figures it out... but I just love the design and it would be a perfect play for us and our run-heavy / obfuscation-y O.

Finished the game.  Well, we can expect a really really really really really really really really really tough game in MTL in 2 weeks.  Clearly Maas isn't resting anyone.  (They say Alexander only started this one because Cody had another baby.)  And the players are playing full tilt: I didn't see any half-butting it.

That MTL D is still deadly: they'll eat your OL alive (probably as good as TOR) and aren't afraid to blitz often (unlike TOR).  And on the back end the league-best DB corps will INT any imperfect throw.

Maybe their LBers aren't their best unit?  But still darn good compared to most teams.  It gives us hope, as I think we can run against MTL.

And where the heck did Mack come from this week?  He was supposed to have had a season-ender!  Just great.  Is anyone of consequence hurt in MTL?  Why does every team get creamed with injuries except them?  Just like last season they'll be the healthiest going into the playoffs.

On the bright side, TOR@MTL EDF should be a massive slug-fest and it should wear out both teams.  Hopefully it won't be a blowout (either way!) like last year.  It has to go down to the wire to put max wear & tear on the winner.

Not sure he is an "up and comer", he's been this type of DB for a while.  And by DB, I can mean either DB or DB.
Unabashed positron.  Blue koolaid in my fridge.  I wear my blue sunglasses at night.  Homer, d'oh.
