Beer Deposit Charge?

Hey Guys, my wife just picked up a 24 of Coors Light that is on sale...took in a few dozen empties too...
But she got a receipt and said they charged her $2.40 for "deposit".

I've never asked for a receipt before, so not sure how long that has been going on?  I think the LC has done that for a long time, but beer stores too?

Are they charging me to bring my empties back?  Seems stupid.

It's been going on at least 30 years.
The "deposit" is $.10/can or bottle that you buy. 24 X $.10 = $2.40 on the beer your wife bought.
They're not charging you to bring the empties back, they're paying you the deposit back. There should be a separate line item on the receipt showing how much she got refunded for the empties she returned.
This is to encourage recycling of the cans or bottles so they don't get thrown in the trash.

In BC, we are charged a flat 10 cents (refundable) for all beverage containers at point of sale. We are also charged a non-refundable environmental fee on top of that (varies by size/type of container)

We are charged for plastic, glass, aluminum, drink box, etc. It applies to all drinks including milk, juice, pop, alcohol.

We get the 10 cent deposit back when we return the beverage container. Caps remain on bottles, straws are to be pushed into drink boxes or pouches.
